Triple vinyl LP pressing. Lost 80s presents 30 tracks compiled by Gary Crowley across three 'themed' LPs, from 'Jingly Jangly' indie-pop 7"s to the edge of the New Romantic, and Dance grooves. Many of these tracks are rare and very hard to find having not appeared on CDs or LPs since the original 80s releases. The better known artists that do appear here are represented by some of their lesser-known ('lost') tracks. "The 80s (and especially the first part) was an amazing time for music. It was a mad, fast, kaleidoscopic rollercoaster ride where the chancers taking your money not only walked the walk; they backed it up with innovative, amazing tunes that changed the way music was made forever. That's certainly how I remember it..." Gary Crowley Presented across 3 x Heavyweight 180g pieces of coloured vinyl, and including an introduction and track by track notes by Gary Crowley, plus memories of the era from Nick Heyward (Haircut 100), Sarah Dallin (Bananarama), Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) Annabella Lwin (Bow Wow Wow), Clare Grogan (Altered Images) and more. I must admit that I was a bit disappointed when I initially saw the track list. There are so many truly 'lost' tracks that really need exposure - see below.
However the tracks on the 4CDs are nicely organised into 'Jingly-Jangly; 2: F**** Art Lets Dance; 3. Dance This Mess Around 4. 12" Heaven.
'Jingly-Jangly' has been my favourite as a whole CD but inexplicably it is only 53 mins long. Whilst there are some old favourites on here it is also good to be reminded of some lost tracks e.g. Friends Again 'Honey at the Core' , Morgan MvVey's original version of the track that would become Neneh Cherry's 'Buffalo Stance' etc.
Sadly there are commercial tracks included such as Wham! to catch passing punters attention. This appears to have continued into the part 2 of the series that was recently announced...
Surprisingly for a compilation there are relatively few tracks that make me hit the skip button. Well worth a purchase for a trip down memory lane.
P.S. Real lost tracks for future editions include: The Wallflowers 'Blushing Girl', Les Enfants 'Slipaway', anything by The Fountainhead etc etc.

What a fantastic selection from a great era in music. I used to listen to “GC the busy bee” all those years ago and this takes me right back to the endless sunny days of my youth. Sorry, I’ve got something in my eye (sniff)!

Gary Crowley used to do a music show on ITV (early 90's?) which generally went out around 3a.m. and which I'd dutifully record as there'd always be something good there, a bit like Peel on the radio. So I bought this expecting to revisit those times, but tbh it's a disappointing selection, and certainly not very Alternative. The set starts promisingly with the always-rewarding Vic Godard's "Stop That Girl", but the bubble is soon burst by Haircut 100. Same objection regarding chart dross like Wham! and Spandau Ballet, let alone no-marks like Blue Rondo. Even with the good tracks there's a totally random feel to the selection - US alt scene represented by one Bush Tetras track, similar token nod to hip hop - and sequencing on the discs.
Sure, as always it's a matter of personal taste in the end, but this could have been so much better.

The CD covers in the case are very tight paper covers making it impractical to use. On the first time I struggled to take out the CDs to play I damaged CDs 2 & 4 both now will not play on three CD drives.

Gary Crowley has done a great job here pulling together overlooked gems with lesser known tracks from some big names of the 80s. It's not meant to be a 'best of the 80s' (you won't have to look far to find those) but instead a place to discover bands like Fantastic Something, the Questions and April Showers whose lack of success doesn't mean they're not worthy of inclusion here.

Of course, with 63 tracks, you're not going to like every one but the accompanying notes really complement the songs and make you want to listen carefully. This is a classic case for continuing to buy physical music - a really great package with the songs given real context.

Gary talks about a possible sequel and I, for one, would certainly be up for that.
