Includes more than eighty rare photographs, some published here for the first time.

Before they made the films which are their principal legacy, the Marx Brothers were the stars of three Broadway musicals in the 1920s. Two of these, The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers, are popular classics, familiar from the Brothers’ immortal film versions, and from numerous stage revivals. But the boys’ 1924 Broadway debut, I’ll Say She Is, was never filmed or revived, and it slipped through history’s fingers. Although it was the most successful thing the Marx Brothers ever did on stage, it was unseen for ninety years after the original production closed, and has been considered a lost work.

In 2009, writer, performer, lyricist, and Groucho Marxist Noah Diamond began a seven-year odyssey which led to the restoration, adaptation, and finally the historic first revival of this legendary entry in the Marx and musical theatre canons. Gimme a Thrill tells the whole story for the first time—the complete history of I’ll Say She Is from 1923 to 2014.

Noah Diamond adapted the book and lyrics for I’ll Say She Is and has a long history of playing Groucho, on and off the stage. He is among the organizers of Marxfest, New York City’s Marx Brothers festival, and has written and lectured widely on the Marxes and their work. With his partner Amanda Sisk, he wrote and produced the Nero Fiddled musicals, a series of political satires. His previous books are 400 Years in Manhattan and Love Marches On.

"Gimme A Thrill" is a must-read for any fan of the Marx Brothers or musical theater. The first part reveals the story behind the first production to launch the Marx Brothers' Broadway success, paving their way to international acclaim and cult status. The second details the dramatic story of bringing the musical back to life decades after it's final performance, highlighting a cast of characters who attempt to authentically recreate a a show they've only seen in their imaginations. The author, Noah Diamond, due to his first person experience as producer and playwright of the revival, gives insight into both the Marx first efforts on Broadway and puts you right inside the struggles of bringing back a musical that hasn't been seen for generations.

If only for the discussion of Herman Timberg, who should be researched far more for his contribution to les freres Marx, this is a great addition to the Marx Bio bookshelf - it gives a lot of background missed even by the masterful tome by Joe Adamson (Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Sometimes Zeppo) where his Marxian "antiquity" can cover only so much in its 100 page section. Now, with CGI sophistication seen in resurrecting Peter Cushing for Star Wars, it should be a mission to recreate "I'll Say She Is" for the 21st century!

What an amazing story, brought to life by a true (Groucho) Marxist. Noah Diamond should be commended not only for teasing lost details about the original production out of the mists of time (and innumerable rolls of dusty microfiche), but for his heroic efforts bringing the production back to the boards. Will I make a trip to NYC to see this production? You bet your life!

5.0 su 5 stelle Lost Marx Brothers Play Becomes Amazing Found Book 11 maggio 2016

On the surface, Gimme a Thrill is another well researched, wonderfully written Marx Brothers book. Author Noah Diamond, however makes it a story of a personal journey - a journey to find, and revive the most important story of the Marx's illustrious career,

I'll Say She was the Marx Brothers' first Broadway show - the culmination of 20 hard years traversing the country on Vaudeville. But unlike the two Broadway hits that followed, The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers, it was never made into a movie. For 90+ years, it became almost forgotten, until diamond decided that it needed to be revived. This book is the story of his journey digging out remaining fragments of the script and music, and in the process, finding out more about himself as well.

This is a FUN book - Diamond infuses it with humor throughout, digging out facts about the original production that address many myths and rumors that sprung up about it over the decades. The humor continues when discussing his quest to actually revive the show for actual production, His search for his 'inner Groucho' is actually quite moving in a way.

This is a Must Read, not only for Marx Brothers fans, but for anyone that has had interest in the theater or Broadway.

One could revive the classic blurb Groucho wrote for a friends book, "I started laughing the minute I picked up this book - someday I intend to read it!", but read this - its well worth actually READING.

5.0 su 5 stelle Gave Me A Thrill! 4 maggio 2016

I've read a ton of books on the Marx Brothers. You'd think there wasn't anything out there that I hadn't read before, but I'm happy to say that this book "gave me a thrill" by uncovered new information on a period of their careers that was new to me! The book is divided into two parts, the first on the original production and the second on the author's researching and finally restaging this lost treasure. Both parts were very well done and kept me turning pages. Highly recommended!
