Sinossi

Glenn Ford—star of such now-classic films as Gilda, Blackboard Jungle, The Big Heat, 3:10 to Yuma, and The Rounders—had rugged good looks, a long and successful career, and a glamorous Hollywood life. Yet the man who could be accessible and charming on screen retreated to a deeply private world he created behind closed doors.

Glenn Ford: A Life chronicles the volatile life, relationships, and career of the renowned actor, beginning with his move from Canada to California and his initial discovery of theater. It follows Ford’s career in diverse media—from film to television to radio—and shows how Ford shifted effortlessly between genres, playing major roles in dramas, noir, westerns, and romances.

This biography by Glenn Ford’s son, Peter Ford, offers an intimate view of a star’s private and public life. Included are exclusive interviews with family, friends, and professional associates, and snippets from the Ford family collection of diaries, letters, audiotapes, unpublished interviews, and rare candid photos. This biography tells a cautionary tale of Glenn Ford’s relentless infidelities and long, slow fade-out, but it also embraces his talent-driven career. The result is an authentic Hollywood story that isn’t afraid to reveal the truth.

5.0 su 5 stelle A superb, discerning look into a great actor's life and work. 11 marzo 2017
Di R. de Aquino - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
A labor of love. A well-written, informative, sensitive biography by someone who knew his subject most intimately. Glenn Ford may not have won awards for his impressive body of work on film, and we all know that recognition was unfairly given to performances of lesser substance during Glenn Ford's lifetime, but no matter. Glenn Ford was an Actor's Actor. He was a natural. Never a false movement or an insincere performance in his curriculum. Peter Ford illuminates both the man and the artist for us, and he does it most beautifully.

5.0 su 5 stelle "A movie star never really dies ...." 10 maggio 2011
Di Helene Stephens - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
This is an extraordinary book and far exceeds the standards of the "movie star biography" genre. It is simply superb and an exemplary tribute to an actor who had been a "constant" of the American screen for decades. Well-written, interesting, honest, filled with delightful anecdotes and characters, this book is just wonderful reading.

As long as I can remember, Glenn Ford has been a "constant" of the American film. I admit I've always been a "fan," but I got that from my parents! I recall, back in the late 1940's, my parents would go to any film starring Glenn Ford because, they said, they knew it would be good. After reading this book, I realize that many of Mr. Ford's films would NOT have been considered good - except for HIS being a part of them! In truth, Glenn Ford never gave a bad performance, and he made it look easy, through seven decades of his career.

Mr. Ford's son Peter has filled his pages with the stories behind the dreams that Glenn Ford brought to the screen. He has given us a perfect portrayal of a true film icon. It is a candid and honest biography, so YES, we do see the good and the bad. And along the way, we get a sweeping and entertaining vista of the American film industry. The author's voice is natural; it's as if he were sitting in our living room and sharing stories with us. And through the author, we get to "see" the many faces of the private Glenn Ford.

It's been said that Glenn Ford was the only actor who'd be able to hold his own on the screen in "Gilda" with Rita Hayworth - and I agree. Over the years, I have come to favor film noir, and I have watched (and re-watched) many of Mr. Ford's performances - and always, I'm impressed by the "actor-chameleon" who seemed to blend effortlessly into each role. (And anyone who has ever watched "Gilda" and been intrigued by Glenn Ford's cold-sizzle glare should buy this book! The chapter entitled "Amado Mio" will be a special treat.)

Although Glenn Ford was an exceptional actor, his personality seemed to steer him sadly toward the pain of loneliness (and seeking the company of women to alleviate that loneliness). It is unfortunate that Glenn Ford, movie star, actually missed the best part of his life and true potential for happiness by not looking around him and appreciating his wonderful wife and son.

The author also does something pretty special: we get a little synopsis of many of his father's films, skillfully woven into the narrative. I now have a new list of must-see films to further enjoy the talents of a truly remarkable actor. As son and author Peter says: "A movie star never really dies ...." as long as his work remains.

To everyone - film buff - fan - or not: I say, get this book and ENJOY!

5.0 su 5 stelle Triumph! 25 maggio 2011
Di Barbara L. Celello - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
From Canada to America, to Europe and elsewhere, the entire contextual ride throughout the book authored by Peter Ford, "Glenn Ford,A Life"
is an immense journey. The story of Glenn Ford's life is infinitely
detailed, defining much of the history of Hollywood life during an era
when Hollywood Stars acquired pedestal images. Peter informs the reader
of the many sacrifices some of those Stars, their spouses and children,
would make for the sake of fame.
Those of us who lived within the margin of Hollywood life had an advantage
of knowing some of the "inside scoop" before Hedda Hopper news hit the
streets. Yet, Peter has defined Hollywood history in truths that we would
otherwise not have known. His story is not of resentment, but of candor,
including "trysts and turns" of celebrity relationships.
Through his son, Peter, Glenn Ford has finally outperformed the Academy.
This literary ride is one not to be missed, a real triumph!

5.0 su 5 stelle A HOLLYWOOD LEGEND REVEALED 7 maggio 2011
Di Nick Anez - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Glenn Ford was one of Hollywood's most popular stars and one of its most versatile and underrated actors. He was also an admirable person. He was a loving husband and father. He was kind to his friends and generous to charities. At various times, he served in the Coast Guard, the Marines and the Naval Reserve; in fact, he nearly lost his life from enemy action in Vietnam. However, he was also a serial adulterer and a distant father who could be moody, arrogant, and volatile.

Peter Ford, Glenn's son, tells this entire story in his candid biography of his famous father. Though Peter doesn't pull any punches, this is not a trashy-type memoir but a thoroughly researched and well-documented account that covers the actor's complete life, from his birth in Canada in 1916 to his death in Beverly Hills in 2006.

Within those 90 years is a continually fascinating story of a genuine movie star. Along the way, Peter gives a comprehensive account of all of his father's films and provides interesting anecdotes on the production of his most famous movies. Numerous co-stars, such as Jack Lemmon, Sidney Poitier, Debbie Reynolds, Shirley Jones and Ernest Borgnine recall working with Glenn. From such interviews as well as from contemporary reviews, the actor's extraordinary and unappreciated talent becomes clear.

Glenn's difficult relationships with personalities such as Harry Cohn, Frank Capra and Marlon Brando provide interesting reading. He remained a devoted friend to Rita Hayworth during her troubled years, when everyone else in Hollywood had deserted her. The book naturally provides intimate details on his marriage to Peter's mother, Eleanor Powell, as well as on the author's life with this famous couple, before and after their divorce. Glenn's three additional--and increasingly disastrous--marriages are also detailed. Also revealed are his affairs with numerous actresses, including--in addition to Hayworth--Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Maria Schell and a host of others. But the author never resorts to salaciousness; this isn't that kind of book.

Ironically, this famous Hollywood star who had everything was always looking for love, or something resembling it. In actuality, he had true love from Eleanor Powell but he threw it away. Eleanor gave up her successful career for Glenn but he didn't appreciate this sacrifice. He had a selfish streak that he displayed toward those closest to him while he became increasingly vulnerable to younger women who left him emotionally and financially bankrupt. Depression and alcoholism marked the slow decline of Glenn Ford's life but, fortunately, his son and daughter-in-law never deserted him.

As an author, Peter Ford displays remarkable objectivity in his descriptions of his often-difficult childhood and his fluctuating relationship with his father. He has a relaxed way of writing which makes the book a very satisfying read. He has the advantage of being a significant part of his subject's life but yet he still maintains a careful balance between emotion and reality. He avoids speculation and gossip and concentrates on factual detail. He details his father's faults as well as his virtues with compassion, understanding and honesty. This is a revealing, truthful and insightful biography of a Hollywood legend.

5.0 su 5 stelle Revealing Look Inside A Complex Man 24 agosto 2011
Di Michael S. Carroll - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Peter Ford's biography of his father Glenn Ford offers a rich and amazingly candid glimpse into the life a complex, driven man. In order to achieve the great success that Glenn Ford enjoyed, becoming the most popular box office star in Hollywood after struggling at a career for twenty years, you have to be focused, self-obsessed, and sacrificing. In the case of Ford, the greatest sacrifice he made was of his family life in favor of work, money, and women.

I've never known much about Ford's private life, but I've always liked his films and natural acting style. His easy, relaxed nature to a performance always made him seem more real to me, and made him stand out from the rest of the people around him who were working so hard at their acting. This is most particularly the case in his films starting with "The Blackboard Jungle" and continuing on for the next decade or so of his career when he seemed to "find himself" as both an actor and a star. These films would include "3:10 to Yuma," "Trial," "Imitation General," "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," and "Fate Is The Hunter" just to name a few of my favorites.

Peter Ford has done a very brave thing with this book, and at his father's encouragement it should be noted, of not glossing over his father's life and editing it to make it into a publicist's press book. This book is bare-knuckles honest. Showing his father Glenn Ford at his best and at his less admirable moments, such as with his many affairs, which he wrote about in his personal diaries and was unbelievably candid about to his son Peter in his adult life.

It is as much a biography, thoroughly researched and supported with interviews with people who worked with Ford, even going back to when he was a teenager in Santa Monica community theater, as it is Peter Ford's personal memoir about his life with and without his father. They had a difficult father-son relationship with many lows and just as many terrific highs.

It is also, towards the end of the book and Glenn Ford's life, a cautionary tale about aging, about turning your life over to others to manage and how that life can be exploited, taken advantage of, and systematically robbed of almost every penny you have. Elder abuse is one of the great tragedies that befall so many people, of all walks of life, in the final act of their lives. The last chapters of this book should be read carefully and readers should take note to not let these nightmares happen to them.

In the end, "Glenn Ford: A Life" is a diverse and in-depth look into one man's life and how he lived it, for better and for worse. It is much like all of our lives when we have the opportunity to look back on them in later years, filled with our own successes, failures and personal regrets.

Not only is this book well worth reading, it is detailed enough to be worth reading again.
