Sinossi

A riveting compilation of surreal, supernatural and mysterious tales.

Seven compelling stories of obsession, loss, redemption, unusual romance and hope are brought together in this unsettling and original anthology. From ethereal speculation to rekindling forgotten love, these beautifully crafted tales explore human nature in all its diversity. Sometimes disturbing, sometimes inspirational, they all have a metaphorical richness that will take you into an uncanny world that straddles the line between the real and the imagined.

“The subjects range from humour to horror and supernatural romance to repressed creativity - they all have an underlying oddness about them which is quite refreshing. Recommended for those who enjoy something a bit out of the ordinary.”

“I loved these short stories. Thought provoking, clever. Her writing is filled with suspense, creepy and fast moving. Believe me, you won't skip a page for fear of missing something vital - and it's not what she says, it's what she doesn't say, that's brilliant.”

Scarecrow
‘The rain had stopped and the sky was clear. The moon shone bright and made drops of water that clung onto the cobwebs shimmer like diamonds. To Katy they looked like necklaces left out to dry by ghosts.

Daub:
“The nightlight on the bedside table cast elongated shadows across the floor. The dark lines crawled along the skirting boards and up the walls like dirty fingers groping for something clean.”

Rousseau’s Suburban Jungle:
“Esther drew a tree with bright green leaves that curled up and around the canvas snake-like and cruel. She gave it a head, red eyes and ivory fangs, its mouth open, ready to bite anyone who came too close.”

If you enjoy reading authors such as Haruki Murakami, Angela Carter, H.P. Lovecraft and M.R. James, then this anthology is for you.

L'autore

Nicola McDonagh was born in Liverpool and is a creative writing tutor and photographer. Originally Nicola trained as a photojournalist, then decided to do something more theatrical and gained a Hons. Degree in Drama and English Literature. Nicola spent many years as an actor, scriptwriter and workshop leader, but gave all that up when she moved to Suffolk UK and became fascinated by the beauty of her surroundings. Nicola returned to her love of literature and after gaining a Diploma in Creative Writing, and won the Suffolk Book League’s Short Story Competition in 2011 with ‘Glimmer’. Nicola was short-listed for the Escalator Genre Fiction Competition the following year with an extract from her unorthodox YA sci-fi novel ‘Echoes from the Lost Ones’.

5.0 su 5 stelle The author's vivid imagery makes 'Glimmer and Other Stories' a treat for readers 23 maggio 2015

"It looked as though the sky had turned to liquid and was running down a tree trunk."
Author Nicola McDonagh has a way of putting the reader in the moment with vivid imagery and her book 'Glimmer and Other Stories' is a wonderful example of her ability to do just that. Her writing is, quite simply, beautiful.
That said, I should add at this point that I don't believe this is a book for every reader. I say that because these are, by the author's own admission, "strange" stories. Strange in the sense that they are, at least some of them, verging on surreal. Strange, also, in the sense that unlike many writers, McDonagh doesn't tie all her stories together with a neat bow so that the reader can sigh after finishing one and say "ah, what a nice ending." Instead, she often leaves the reader with a puzzled frown wondering just what happens next. For many readers, especially those who like to be spoon fed sugar-coated stories by television producers, this can be unsettling. However, if you are a reader who enjoys the opportunity to interact with a story, one who likes a bit of mystery and a challenge to your intellect, McDonagh has given you a book that is not only interesting but also intriguing.
In short, this is a book for those who derive pleasure from reading a series of words strung together beautifully; with great skill and great imagination.
If you are one of those people, I'd say buy this book and enjoy it.
I certainly did.

4.0 su 5 stelle A Gallery of Visuals 10 dicembre 2016

These literary tales surprised me for many reasons but especially for the symbolic thread involving art that runs through most of the stories. A visual palette for the senses, her use of colorful language ties the reader’s attention to the art and then, when least expected, the canvas is torn or the stained glass is broken. My favorite line about an artist appears in Earnest Thirk, “Art was more than the object, more than the value of the piece. It was a way of giving himself to the world without actually having to be part of it.” Her quote might also apply to the artist, Nicola Mcdonagh, who created these riveting works of museum-quality words, thus giving herself to the world, one fearless story at a time.

5.0 su 5 stelle I'm glad that I found this short story collection 25 maggio 2016

I'm glad that I found this short story collection. I really enjoyed the stories, especially the way in which the author left some aspects open and unexplained so that the reader could use his or her imagination. The writing is skillful, engaging the reader in both story and character right away in all the stories. My only comment would be that I consider the stories more on the side of magical realism rather than mystery and suspense. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this book for those who enjoy unusual and thoughtful short stories.

It's not hard to understand why Nicola McDonagh has won awards for her creative literature. Nicola has a special skill in the art of crafting unique and entrancing short stories.
"Glimmer" is a terrific read if you appreciate the tantalizing taste of mystical imagery. All seven stories were immediately engaging and full of intrigue, with a common thread of surrealism woven through. Every story took me on a different metaphorical journey into another realm of being.
If you appreciate literary writing, you will love the way Nicola so cleverly uses many and varied language techniques, but her style is not for everyone.
A great book - definitely if you value quality writing and appreciate the unusual.

4.0 su 5 stelle Unique & Provocative 16 aprile 2015

Ms. McDonagh demonstrates a unique approach to understanding the inner world of those among us who are slipping into an alternate reality. There are seven short stories in her collection (with compelling titles such as Daub, Scarecrow, On the Eighth Day, Glimmer). Each piece is quite skillful in describing and crafting what I might call a series of schizophrenic or out of body experiences. Her stories shift from internal to external perspectives but demonstrate a rich use of language and an appreciation for various psychological and physical states of being. Well-done and quite creative.
