International relations; a chess game... overarching generations. if we want to understand the current conflicts around the World we have to look at moments in time when thoughts have been put on paper, which have influenced policy makers and strategists alike. This book is an absolute MUST for anyone who has the welfare of this planet in his mind. It should be compulsory not just at universities but for everyone, we can't afford NOT to KNOW. The detached coldness of the chess master is sometimes hard to take but it allows us an insight into the chilling tone with which the fate of nations is decided; and of course these nations have no avenue open to them to appeal the decisions the chess master makes, they have to endure. Please, read this book and understand... Alexandra from Brisbane, Australia

If you want to know what's going on being things like why the US goes to war in Afghanistan but not in Congo, this is an excellent book. Requires an open mind and willingness to look at things from a perspective you almost never hear about in mainstream media. If you think Noam Chomsky has a point, you're gonna appreciate this book.

I found this book to be very enlightening but want to stress that the author's views are not aligned with my own. An insider for yrs, Brzezinski sets a plan to keep America as the lone world super power (and last global super power in his own words) for at least another generation or two. Very blandly written, choppy and repetitive at times; but gives you a look at how these minds operate "for" the USA. Simply stated...I think the title gives it away....the people of the world are merely pawns to move around this chessboard we call earth. Where is the humanity in this book, there are very controversial statements throughout this book (I will not state them, although pg 216 is the most known).
3,0 su 5 stelleThe Power Moves of the Grand Chessboard
DaEdward S. Brownil 12 agosto 2009 - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Zbigniew Brzezinski's, "The Grand Chessboard" is an excellent analysis of where power and influence currently resides on the world stage. Brzezinski's proclamation that the US will remain influential based on its dominance in: Technology, military might, finance and culture sets the stage for determining the criteria for "Superpower" status. Perhaps, Brzezinski's concept is overly ambitious given the perilous times we currently live. After all, an "also ran" country could become a "Game changer" and shock the world by transforming the rules of the current "power" game. The optimism of "The Grand Chessboard" is carefully illustrated by outlining the flaws of countries like Russia and China attempting to become global superpowers without the indispensable aid of the US. "The Grand Chessboard" is an easy read based on the headiness of the subject matter, but must be ingested in small pieces. Absorbing the fine points and historical background of the world requires focused attention and the willingness to follow the author's philosophical rationale.
All in All, "The Grand Chessboard" breaks down the acquisition and maintenance of power at the macro level, where Floyd Hunter's, "Community Power Structure: A Study of Decision Makers" accomplishes a similar mission at the micro level.
"The Grand Chessboard" is not page- turner. This book is geared for the student of politics, business and international affairs. If you want to connect the dots in geopolitics, this is a "must read."
