I have used a lot of different joysticks and not just on the 360 too. I had a stick for Super NES, Playstation, and Dreamcast. Of course all those sticks didn't feel as good. Maybe it was because they were older and makers didn't care as much of the quality of their products back then. But, not this stick.
When people said it's like an arcade stick, it's really true. It has the real arcade feel. The stick and buttons feel just like the cabinets. It is the real arcade size too. You can play this stick on a table or on your lap. It's big enough to fit right on your lap without it moving everywhere. (On other sticks, I remember those times. lol)
This stick comes with a square gate. A square gate means that your stick only has the corners that you can place your stick in and you feel a groove in that corner. You won't feel a groove at the top, bottom, left, or right. You have to get used to square gates if you never played them before. (I in fact, haven't gotten used to them so I had to learn how to use them well.)
With a weeks play, I was pretty good at playing with a square gate, but I changed it to an Octagonal plate eventually. I changed it to an Octagonal plate because I'm just used to it, and is pure preference. For those that don't know what an Octagonal plate is, it's like a square gate that has groove in every direction. You just feel the groove, when you're in a down position, left, right, up...anywhere! lol
There is a 3rd gate, which is called the circular gate for the sticks. This gate has no corners anywhere and is just a plain circle, but there are players that like this. They know what they are doing and is possible to actually beat out square gate and octagonal gate players in terms of inputting their action. Therefore, in theory they are the best to get in any move first.
You can buy an Octagonal gate on Amazon and I also wrote a review about it on the page. Also, I wrote down a different place to buy it. If you plan on changing the gate or anything in this joystick, you will need to open it up. You need a simple Phillips head screwdriver to open the back side. After that might be a problem. You need to get a 7mm Hex screwdriver. If you can't find one of those like I did, I tried out using a wrench or pillars to get the screw out.
It's possible to get out some screws out without the 7mm Hex screwdriver, but you do mess up the screws. One screw in particular is at the top center, you will find is the most difficult...maybe impossible to get out like without a real 7mm Hex screwdriver. I finally give up and got really lucky because I find another solution, a different Hex head! A 9/64 inch Hex bit can also unscrew it. These screw bits come in a large set and I don't think they do come in singles screwdrivers like the 7mm does.
One thing you want to keep in mind is that, you don't want to really force getting those screws out with your wrench or pillars, if you mess up the screw too bad, it will be too difficult to screw them back in. I know for some of mine I really messed them up. But, I know I can get it out easy now with my Hex bit, but I have to put some effort in it.
All in all, anyone should get this stick, if you want to play like in the arcade.
The stick is also considerably bigger than the DOA 4 stick, and better suited for table top play if you're into that sort of thing. It also adds two more buttons to the face. THey seem useless to me, but some like to use them for PPP and KKK presses on Street Fighter 4.
Most importantly though, the stick plays like a dream. Street Fighter 4, Soul Calibur 4, Virtua Fighter 5 are all thanking me for finally buying this stick.
If you're having a hard time finding this stick, bear in mind that Hori will be releasing a new version soon. (Hori tends to release new editions for hot games etc) Don't feed greedy speculators by paying $200+ for a stick that can be gotten for retail with a little patience.
Man am I glad I pulled the trigger on this the other day, no kidding, 2 hours later they were sold out, then 12 hours later clowns are trying to sell these for $300...sheesh.
Thi sis my first fighter stick, so I have nothing to compare to, but I will say this, it is awesome. We already know the 360 pad sucks pure a$$ for fighting games, and for someone who has been out of the SF scene for as long as I have, it REALLY sucked using the 360 controller!
Everything I can tell about this stick is pure quality, response time is perfect for me, and the button layout works. The weight of the stick is great and this thing sits on my coffee table and does what it's supposed to.
I also like the fact that I can upgrade/improve components easily, I am really thinking about doing some upgrades.
get this now, WHEN Amazon gets them back in stock, don't pay any of these yahoos 300+ fro one of these, this controller craze with SF 4 is out of control.
