5.0 su 5 stelle An Act of Kindness 26 dicembre 2013
Di HeartyGuy - Pubblicato su

"An act of kindness. Forces emerging then spent. Resonate beyond."

To me, this beautiful Haiku poem, just one from this masterful collection of Haiku by Geraldine Hartman, expresses the creative intelligence behind every Season and every Child born. It also happens to be the perfect description for her enchanting book!

Writers, think about it – is not writing an act of kindness to one's self, in which you give voice to your musings, pondering, and reflections so that you may allay a doubt, a fear.. rejoice? In which your subjects are memorialized, embellished, or created out of whole cloth for the benefit of the reader? The motives and the characters are as varied as the changing landscapes of the Four Seasons.

Haiku are seventeen-syllable poems that originated in Japan and date back at least to the 16th century. Meant to be recited in one breath, they seek to convey a deep awareness of nature through implied contrasts, comparisons and association.

Current times bereft.
A pregnant past could tell.
Letter lasered pane.

Not a very good effort on my part probably; Geraldine inspires us to try at least!

4.0 su 5 stelle Beautiful imagery! 21 ottobre 2013

I confess, I don't know much about the art of haiku, but I do know a lot about words, and Geraldine Hartman uses them in spare, but beautiful, combinations to evoke a whole host of seasonal images and emotions. You wouldn't think a mere three lines--just 17 syllables--could say so much, but if chosen wisely, this book proves they certainly can. Fall is my favorite season, so I was especially entranced by the crisp, cool images presented in that section of the book. I could smell autumn in the air with every haiku!

Haiku Reflections is put together beautifully, too, with color photographs at the beginning of each season, and that adds a great deal to the entire presentation. If you love poetry, even if you aren't familiar with haiku, I think you will love this little book, too. I sure did.

5.0 su 5 stelle Calming and Reassuring ... Just What I Needed 5 marzo 2014
Di Elizabeth M Day - Pubblicato su

I've really enjoyed choosing a season (the haikus in this book are organized by seasons of the year) based on how my day is going. Am I feeling like winter, summer, spring, or fall? And then at different times during the day, I read one or two of the haikus from that season. Those thoughtful, poignant words give me so much in the moment. There's a great energy to these haikus -- they're calming, reassuring, and gentle. Beautiful book!

5.0 su 5 stelle A Beautiful, Evocative Journey 19 agosto 2012
Di William Hammett - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Geraldine Hartman's HAIKU REFLECTIONS is a marvelous book for anyone who treasures the traditional haiku form of three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable count. The poems all contain kigo, or seasonal references, in the grand tradition of this poetic form. The collection progresses through spring, summer, autumn, and winter in a journey that describes not only nature but the author's internal and external passage through the year.

The poems are both delicate and precise, as all haiku should be. There is not a wasted syllable in this volume, with the imagery always crystal clear, whether describing color, scent, movement, weather, foliage, animals, or the thoughts engendered in the mind and soul of the author. Ms. Hartman captures the essence of what our eyes and minds too often dismiss: a weathered gazebo, lemonade, a thunderstorm, rain, a mop and bucket, a bridge, or a simple act of kindness.

Each poem is thoughtfully tendered, and the poems may be read back to back, or they may be read individually, allowing the imagery to sink deeper so that the various images may crystallize in new and insightful ways. Indeed, haiku always invites the reader to savor a single thought or scene and its beauty and fragility, and Ms. Hartman has given us such beauty in every one of her offerings. They are truly reflections that call readers to a deeper stillness and appreciation of the moment.

The haiku in this collection cover a wide range of emotions: happiness, disappointment, doubt, acceptance, joy, and meditative stillness. In detailing these emotions so carefully, the author, as stated above, lovingly chronicles her journey through the year. And yet her journey is the pilgrimage of everyone, and to a larger extent, our journey through life itself.

As the last haiku in the book implies, the collection reveals "our own path in life" and reminds us that "nature remains through all change." HAIKU REFLECTIONS artfully calls readers to reflect on their own paths as they follow and observe the path of the author. This book is a poetic gem and is highly recommended.

5.0 su 5 stelle Snippets of Beauty 10 gennaio 2013
Di Cora P. - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
In "Haiku Reflections", Ms. Hartman does not simply write about the four seasons, she somehow, miraculously, but in fact very skillfully, captures them whole in her words.

Spring sings of renewed life in crunchy bulbs, summer lounges lavishly by the lake, autumn throws carpets of crisp colors underneath our feet, winter is a quiet beast, safer to be observed from within the warmth of familiar things, yet hinting at the promise of another spring.

In her verse, Ms. Hartman weaves an enchanted array of colors, smells, sounds, textures, temperatures, and feelings. The imagery is simple, yet always surprising in the best of ways. A robin is a feathered talisman, felines are furry kisses... Even the occasional sadness or nostalgia, unavoidable, are soothed by the awareness of the permanence of nature, of our place in it.

This is a collection of delicate beauty, to which one can return time and again, a pleasure to the soul, one that refreshes, inspires, and ultimately gives hope.

Very highly recommended.
