Among those in the "Hitty" community, there are several ideas of Hitty. Hitty as she is expressed in Hitty Her First Hundred Years by Rachel Field, and as continued by Ms. Provost in Hitty and Her Next Hundred Years is one small wooden doll living in a big world of travel and adventures. Her original stories and Ms. Provost's sequel are based on the real pegged wooden doll found in an antique shop by Rachel Field and her friend, illustrator Dorothy Lathrop. Then, there is the world that has been created and imagined by those who love her. There have been many Hitty dolls created as replicas and impressions of the original Hitty doll and her spirit. In some households, there are many such Hitty dolls, and "Hitty" becomes more of a surname or title, such as "Hitty Rose". Hitty and the Halloween Pumpkin Patch Hunt is written honoring this second idea of Hitty and the people who love having their own Hittys.
Hitty, assuming the original idea of one Hitty, gathers with her Hitty friends, Hitty Maribelle, and Miss Hitty Belle Lee for a celebration of Halloween. Imagination takes over as the personified dolls take off in horse and buggy, greet friends, and find themselves at the pumpkin patch in search of the perfect pumpkins. What ensues is a delightfully detailed adventure that many families and children can relate to. This short story is a well written doll story celebrating the season. It reminds me of the fully engulfed world of imaginary doll play that a child enters into as they recreate, yet forget the world beyond the edges of their play.
