Sinossi

What is the secret formula for love?

Hector, our intrepid psychiatrist, sets off on a new globe-trotting mission -- and this time he's looking for love.

One of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies has employed him to track down their brilliant scientist, Professor Cormorant, who has disappeared abroad with the secret of a modern-day love potion.

Leaving behind his troubled relationship with girlfriend Clara, Hector's adventure takes him to the Far East and into the arms of beautiful Vayla, forcing our hero to think deeply about what love really is/means.

In his follow-up to the multi-million-selling Hector and the Search for Happiness, acclaimed writer and psychiatrist, Francois Lelord, offers us a new fable filled with thoughtful insights into the very human desire to find and keep love.

I devoured the 3 Hector books, one after the other, because I found them so refreshing. While the books are written in an easy-to-read and delightfully naive style, they are erudite and intelligent, with gentle humour and complex and imperfect characters. The books are educative, thought-provoking and entertaining all at the same time. I am eagerly awaiting the next Hector instalment.

This is the second book about the adventures of Hector, the psychiatrist, following on from Hector and the Search for Happiness which I reviewed here

The style of writing is in the same childlike manner which is so easy and quick to read that I just skipped along the short paragraphs.

Hector travels to Asia to look for his friend, the professor who has disappeared with samples of a drug for falling in love, or for staying in love when we want to. But, before he sets off his girlfriend Clara tells him that they should stop seeing each other for a while so he has to question his own feelings for her and tries to discover the secrets of love along the way.

As in the first book Hector makes notes of his discoveries, some of which include

Love and jealousy go hand in hand
Love is, smiling the moment you see one another

While searching, he meets a young girl who speaks no English, possibly falling in love with her, is used in one of the professor's experiments, makes new friends, meets and then loses the professor.

I like Hector, he is simple, uncomplicated, friendly and intelligent. He easily makes friends with people no matter who they are or where they're from.

But, about half way through I started to get bored with the story, the pace was going a little too slowly for me, and there was quite a lot of information to absorb. I didn't feel that I knew the other characters very well so couldn't really empathise with them or care too much about what happened to them.

This wasn't a page turner, though it did pick up pace gradually as the plot unfolded and I liked the few twists and turns.

Overall, I didn't enjoy it as much as Hector and the Search for Happiness.

At the back of the book there is an excerpt from the next Hector book -- Hector Finds Time -- which is to be published in April 2012.

François Lelord

Hector and the Secrets of Love

The second volume of Lelord's Hector's Journeys series is every bit as delightful as his bestselling first, Hector and the Search for Happiness. The novel is a heady mixture of satire and realism in which the reader follows Hector to the Far East on a research project sponsored by a go-ahead drug company. Behind little Hector is big business, and before him the tortuous experience of love potions and seductive young ladies from the East. All of which sounds wonderfully fascinating, but proves to be heart-searchingly painful to Hector the earnest but naive psychiatrist, who must leave Clara his true love to find metal more attractive elsewhere.

The charm of this book lies in its simplicity, and its wisdom in being grounded in universal experience of the tender passion. The chapters are short and the language and sentiments unpretentious. Like any good professional, Hector is always learning - about life, about himself and his misconceptions; he makes notes, makes generalisations and then modifies them in the light of experience. Here he is, in the penultimate chapter, learning from a young client, also called Hector, what he'd wish for most in the world:

Little Hector didn't hesitate for a second. `To become a grown-up straight away!'
Hector was surprised. He'd expected Little Hector's answer to be: `For my parents to get back together', or `To get better marks at school', or `To go on a school ski-trip with my friends'.

So he asked Little Hector, `But if you became a grown-up straight away, it would mean that you'd already lived a good few years, and then you'd have fewer left to live. Wouldn't that bother you?'
Little Hector thought it over. `Okay, it's a bit like a video game when you lose an extra life. It's annoying, but it doesn't stop you having fun!'
Then he looked at Hector. `What about you? Would it bother you to have already lost one or two lives?'
Grown-up Hector thought that Little Hector might become a psychiatrist himself one day.

François Lelord has had a successful career as a psychiatrist in France and the United States. Hector's next journey is entitled Hector Finds Time. If it's as funny and engaging as Hector's grappling with the intangibles of happiness and love we are in for a treat.
