The long wait is over.

In 2007, Hidden Earth: Darkness of the Light was released to critical acclaim. Terry Brooks said, "Darkness of the Light…is another quirky, intriguing, wonderful tale, filled with adventure and unexpected plot twists. No one else tells a story quite like Peter David does." Publisher’s Weekly wrote in a starred review, “Peter David (Knight Life) is a master at juggling multiple characters and plot lines...(and) breathes new life into some well-worn mythic tropes.” Booklist wrote, “An entertaining adventure whose cliff-hanger ending confirms that it launches a series.”

Indeed it did, and now the second volume—after a long, strange trip—is here.

The Earth of the future is not one you’d recognize. Creatures that had previously been thought simply myth—vampires, two-legged dragons, trolls, and nine other races—have overrun the planet and made it their own. Humanity is nearly extinct. But now the Twelve Races have discovered that their own fortunes are inextricably linked with the remnants of the human race.

As a result, a young slave girl named Jepp, who holds the key to the future of the world, is on her way to a fateful meeting with the most powerful creature on the face of the planet. Except the question isn’t what will happen when she gets there. The question is whether she’s going to make it there alive.

For fans of Darkness of the Light (newly available as a trade paperback and also, for the first time, as an eBook), Heights of the Depths introduces new races and answers questions about some of the previous ones, including the truth behind the mysterious Serabim, the dreaded Travelers, and even the Overseer himself. For newcomers, you are about to enter an exciting world that is both comfortably familiar…and disturbingly nightmarish.

PETER DAVID is the author of dozens of books, including New York Times bestselling Star Trek: The New Frontier series, as well as the Sir Apropos of Nothing and Knight Life series. A television writer for such shows as Babylon 5, Crusade, and Space Cases [which he co-created], David is also a headlining writer for both Marvel and DC Comics, most recently the Dark Tower series based on Stephen King’s novel. He lives on Long Island.

Before you read Heights of the Depths be sure you read the first book in the series, Darkness of the Light. I'll wait.

Heights of the Depths is another great Peter David venture, taking most of the characters from the first book, weaving in new characters, and then moving the story along so that previously unconnected dots become well, connected.

If you like Peter David's body of work then you should be more than pleased with this series. His trademark humor, wordplay, and segues into scenes are all here. As with all his work, sometimes his humor misses the mark, or he beats a dead whores with one of his gags, but much of the story is a fun romp through the Damned World, with just enough twists, violence, and riding of whores (oops, there I go now) to keep things engaging.

I'm now eagerly awaiting Book Three after waiting years for Book Two to get out of Publishing Purgatory.

The only complaint I have is that the mysterious energy source that seemed so important by the end of Book One is all but forgotten about in this book. And although the characters refer to the "12 Races" constantly, I only count 11 revealed so far (unless I'm mis-counting, of course). I have no doubt, however, that Book Three will make sure everything ties together nicely, as Peter David more than knows what he's doing.

Even if you aren't familiar with David's work (and at this point, how could you not be?)if you like fantasy world stories, you should like this one. It's not depth and serious as many other Fantasy offerings, though, so be warned. It is a fun as hell ride, though, and with enough surprises and revelations set up for Book Three, I personally can't wait.

I was afraid the the second book wouldn't deliver after the way the first set things up, but I need not have worried. It wasn't a generic fantasy genre kind of world, but it had it's own distinctive texture to it. Sort of like the way in which the alternate universe Earth in "The Golden Compass" had an interesting contrast to our own Earth in this universe, the post-apocalyptic setting here had an interesting contrast to our world today. I love the way the mythical creatures' history are intertwined with our actual history of life on Earth, from the prehistoric times through the various cycles of human history leading up to today. There were occasional clunky moments, but those are outweighed by the way the great characters, well done twists, and surprises made this impossible to put down. One thing that stands out is the way in which the Mandraque race were the savage, bullying fearsome race , yet there were some of them who had decent qualities, and it didn't feel too contrived, but made it all the more interesting. I don't understand why this series isn't as big as "Hunger Games" or (blech) "Twilight", but, I have faith there will be a satisfying conclusion.

I first read this book some years ago and I must say that I am a great fan of Peter David's work. Now I rarely read a book a second time, but I took a walk through this one in preparation for the newly released second book of this trilogy. Peter works with some VERY interesting characters and keeps the reader guessing on where all this is going. There's a great deal of exploration on several themes: The rebellious youth against parental cultural momentum, the youth rising above his and her station to take responsibility for the tectonic events in their world, humanity at the precipice of extinction due to alien invasion, and historic ties to Earth's own mythological characters. Read On!

Pretty good 'second' book - but the third has been a while coming, and this one has a cliffhanger, so unless you don't mind waiting for an unknown length of time for the next one, I would say keep this one on your list for the future. It does have some satisfying connections, and it continues as the first book began.

I was recently introduced to Peter David's writing and have found another author to add to my list of favourites. I cannot help but get attached to the characters in the book, always wondering what is going to happen next! I cannot wait for the next installment in the series!
