2.0 su 5 stelle Youth...Ten-year Gap...HEA 26 gennaio 2009

The story was written in the early 90s, published 1992.

Jenny Monroe is 17, a month away from 18. She is the daughter of the family that is the top of the socio-economic stratosphere of the small town.

Mitch Sullivan...the Hell-raiser of the title. 26, works as an auto mechanic saving money to head off to Europe and become a writer. He already has some articles published, so this is not a pipe-dream. (What is the etymology of pipe-dream, anyway?)

I wanted to love this book, even though the H/H were so dang young. I got 1/2 way through, and was still holding out hope...then the misunderstanding happened, and I skimmed through to the end. I really liked Mitch, and Jenny was sweet...but, it just wasn't enough.

I generally love a Dallas Schulze book...even the older SIM titles. My favorite being Secondhand Husband. This one just didn't pan out for me.

Even though The Hell-raiser relies on the big misunderstanding, a trope I usually do not like, I found myself enjoying this novel and it’s because of the small town feel of this story and the lead characters.

Jenny is a high school senior almost seventeen when she is rescued from an assault from her high school date. Her rescuer is Mitch a mechanic who rides a bike and who has little history with the town. Jenny is awed by Mitch and she finds ways to see Mitch at his garage.

Mitch though sees the huge differences between the two. He is eight years older and what may be an even bigger chasm is their economic stations in life. He is working class and she is from a wealthy family. This does not bother Jenny at all who is optimistic about a future with Mitch.

The couple though is torn apart and when they reunite there is mistrust and hurt between them. Jenny suffers from a wave of guilt, so much so that she has changed her entire life. Mitch though has moved on but he still cannot forget his Jenny.

As I stated earlier, there are some big misunderstandings in this novel, between the leads and with others in this story. A five minute conversation would have cleared up so much. This is what is frustrating about the story. Still though, the leads are genuine and they have a sweet romance.
