Descrizione prodotto

Mark Jones is a henchman for hire. He guards bunkers, patrols perimeters and stands around in a boiler suit waiting to get knocked out by Ninjas. This is his job.

He’s worked for some of the most notorious super villains the world has ever known – Doctor Thalassocrat, Victor Soliman, Polonius Crump; Mark was with each of them when they met their makers at the hands of British Secret Service super-spy, Jack Tempest and lived to tell the tale – if not pay the bills.

Still for every hour under gunfire there are weeks if not months of sitting around on monorails so Jones starts a book club with his fellow henchmen to help pass the time.

It was only meant to be a bit of fun.

It was never meant to save the world.

5.0 su 5 stelle A fresh perspective on a villainous life style 23 luglio 2013
Di Kindle Customer - Pubblicato su
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
I absolutely loved the storyline in this book. It was such a fresh perspective to see life from the henchmen of super villains. I always wondered what happened to the poor henchmen who survived after their evil leader was taken out my the super spies from secret services. The wit and humor in the book kept me laughing as I followed the escapades of Mark and loved to see the Henchman's book club evolved in such a fashion. It was a sad moment when I closed read the last words... as it was said in the book, when you truly enjoy a book you read every word including the notes at the end acknowledgements and advertisements because you do not want it to end... and I indeed read every word printed in the book and wanted more.

So to everyone wanting a great book told in the perspective of the bad guys, this book is for you.. buy is TOTALLY worth it.

And to the Author: Thank you for bringing me a bit of joy at a time in my life when I really needed a good laugh.

5.0 su 5 stelle The Literature Professors Book Club Reviews The Henchmen's Book professional jealousy intended. 2 giugno 2013
Di Tony O'seland - Pubblicato su

In a virtual sea of poor content, badly written, thinly plotted books that take themselves so seriously that they must be a parody of one genre or another, it is refreshing to find a book that has none of the above listed faults, and is funny at the same time. "The Henchmen's Book Club" brings the concept of the cold war super spy novel into a refreshing new arena where yes, we know the "Cold War" is supposedly over because it's been coopted by professional high risk villains. Gone are the days of praise for the dashing, kill-about-town spy, and in are the days of the ordinary working stiff whose job just happens to be a gun for hire. And the author goes out of the way to make the protagonist enjoyable by making him "just one of the blokes" who complains about his job, his work conditions, the food, the hours, the living conditions, and the ongoing realization that things will never get appreciably better.

As one of those who grew up on the Ian Flemming series of books and short stories, and the parodies of Ted Mark, I have to recommend this book with its highest possible rating of five stars. My apologies to Mr. Smith and the rest of the Club for skewing the totals in my review, but I think the survivors will understand.

Please, take time and read this book. Is it a deep, soul searching, angst ridden "serious" novel about the condition of man? Nah. But it IS one of the best, as I tell my literature students, "just ripping good yarns" that I have come across in quite a while. Now, if the Protagonist could only be taught to hunt sparkly vampires and whining werewolves....

Ever wonder about the Super Villian's loyal henchmen? This book tells all!

Mark Jones is a professional henchman. He works for the Agency and hires out to villians for particular jobs. Want to destroy a huge diamond mine with a nuke to keep the price of diamonds high? Jones and his associates are your men. Need to rob a cargo plane in mid air and escape, all without landing? Hire Jones.

For most henchmen, the jobs are 99% boredom, punctuated by 1% of sheer terror. Most henchmen never get paid their big payday, because these Super Villians are nuttier than a big pile of squirrel poop. These jobs seldom end well, with most henchmen lucky to escape with their major organs and limbs intact.

During the boring downtime, Jones and his associates start a book club. It becomes popular. So popular that it could someday save lives... maybe even the world!

The Henchmen's Book Club is entertaining and quite funny, in a way that only British understated humor can be. Two characters, Rip Dunbar and Jack

4.0 su 5 stelle Mostly Funny With Occasional Boredom 15 aprile 2015

I felt the idea behind this story was pretty clever and I enjoyed reading it. I mean, people are always writing stories about mad geniuses and their dastardly plots, but how many times do we get to hear it from the lowly "henchman's" viewpoint. Talk about a grossly overlooked segment of the evil empire! Luckily this novel levels the playing field.

Now for my critique: I did enjoy reading this story. As my review title says, it really was mostly funny and there were several times I literally laughed out loud. On the other hand, there were quite a few typos and there were also several places where I got bored and skipped paragraphs, or skimmed over pages. If you have a more focused brain, can overlook some minor typos, or don't mind skimming over some boring descriptions occasionally, then you'll probably enjoy this book, too. The funny parts are worth it, and I do recommend it.

Such a strange topic and such a good book. The unsavory nature of the henchman's work scarcely affects this book at all. You have to accept the concepts and assumptions made by the main characters but once you do this book becomes hard to put down even for a short time. What if there were an organization that organized men willing to go in and fight for all the fantastical causes such as changing Earth's orbit , etc., such as we see movies about? If you can conceive of such an agency and of crackpot multi-mega-millionaires anxious to take on the world and change it to their own mega mad schemes, you will find it hard to put this book down even for a short time. It's adventure that's for sure.
