This was the first book I've read on Hitler, so I can't compare it to any other work. It is a long, well-documented examination of the many forces that created the possibility of a leader like Hitler. It is also a thorough treatment of those who helped shape the mindset of Hitler and considers his personal characteristics that made him what he was. The book does a great job of describing the "perfect storm" that came together in such a devastating way for all of mankind. The last part of the book is an equally thorough examination of metaphysical forces which the author portrays as guiding factors in this chapter of history. I was able to follow his argument and accept that metaphysical forces may indeed have been at work. However, the treatment seemed overdone to me. I began to lose interest in the last section. I do recommend the book. I thought it was insightful, and it was extremely thorough. I learned a lot and plan to read other books about the Hitler phenomenon.
