Consigliato!

5.0 su 5 stelle Wonderful Comprehensive Collection...Thoughtfully Curated 10 giugno 2015
Di "jiffy" jim link - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I really like this collection! It's not a greatest hits collection (though many are represented here) but more of a best of. It's just what the title says :) I think I'm also delighted by this collection because I think I would've picked most of these tracks myself! I believe this collection represents Donna Summer's 5 Geffen albums along with the 2 Atlantic label albums that followed...all her 1980's output save for the "She Works Hard For The Money" project which was recorded for a different label (Mercury).
I think a track list is in order:
Disc 1: 1-This Time I Know It's For Real, 2-Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger) (7" version), 3-State of Independence (7" version), 4-Looking Up, 5-Cold Love (edit), 6-Romeo, 7-All Systems Go (edit), 8-Supernatural Love (remix), 9-Suzanna, 10-When Love Takes Over You (remix), 11-Highway Runner, 12-Breakaway (power radio mix), 13-Heaven's Just A Whisper Away, 14-The Woman In Me, 15-You To Me, 16-Only The Fool Survives (edit).
Disc 2: 1-Dinner With Gershwin, 2-The Wanderer, 3-Eyes (7" remix edi)t, 4-I Don't Want To Get Hurt (7" remix), 5-Love's About To Change My Heart, 6-True Love Survives, 7-Who Do You Think You're Foolin' (edit), 8-Work That Magic (Capricorn ISA remix), 9-(If It) Hurts Just A Little, 10-When Love Cries (radio remix), 11-I'm A Rainbow, 12-Let There Be Peace, 13-State Of Independence (New Bass edit), 14-Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger) (dance remix), 15-Dinner With Gershwin (extended version), 16-This Time I Know It's For Real (extended remix).
You get A LOT of music and value here for the affordable price. It's a great stand-alone collection or it compliments the "Gold" collection rather well.

5.0 su 5 stelle Finally a retrospective of the 1980's- Cuts are excellent, liner notes could have been far better. 20 luglio 2015

In the lifetime of Donna Summer's musical career, there seemed to be many "Greatest Hits" packages of her works that parroted each others master list, plucking the familiar radio and dance floor hits that dominated nearly four decades of magic. Nothing beats the mix of the first original Casablanca collection, "On The Radio:Greatest Hits Vol 1 & 2" (1979), with its continuous flow from one song into the next, crafting one of the most outstanding dj-friendly playlists; you could literally set the needle on the record and just let it play, it was (and still is) that good.
"Hits, Singles & More" finally catalogs the post Casablanca years, and mercifully helps to shine light on her impressive body of work other than "She Works Hard For The Money" (1983), showcasing the commercial and complicated career that spanned from 1980 through 1991. It is this part of the Donna Summer legacy that always gets overlooked, often thought by labels looking for a quick buck on old favorites. It turns out that perhaps the lady herself may have more to do with keeping these gems out of print for so long. Whatever the reason, it is wonderful to see so much available on two discs, one collection.
There are the hits from this time- "Love Is In Control", "State of Independence", through her work with Stock/Aitken/Waterman with the infectious "This Time I Know It's For Real", "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt" and "Breakaway." But instead of highlighting more from the frightfully overrated Quincy Jones sessions (the voice of Donna Summer was crushed under the sound of the canned Quincy Jones treatment, which makes the record more about the producer and less about the singer), it takes the hidden masterpieces from "The Wanderer" (1980) and lets the world hear "Looking Up" and "Who Do You Think You're Fooling". You get to hear the roar of a warrior, not just a diva, on songs like "Supernatural Love", "Cold Love", "All Systems Go", and "You To Me". It rediscovers the "Cats Without Claws" (1984) recordings and uncorks unusual and refreshingly avant garde soul on songs like "Suzanna", "True Love Survives" and "Eyes". This is the first effort of a healthy retrospective that is truly for the fans, the ones (like me) who are excited to see so much that's been buried, finally seeing the light of day. It's not just that the songs weren't available till last year digitally, it's that you had to know that this music existed in order to find it.
Donna Summer fought hard and quite vocally in her time to avoid being labeled strictly by disco. She was rock, soul, and new wave. This is the first time a complete collection has made that quite clear. I only wish they could have included songs like "I'm Free" and "Oh Billy Please" (from her Cats Without Claws album) and "Breakdown" and "Grand Illusion" (from "The Wanderer"). I also think "Cry of The Waking Heart" could have been a better choice to include rather then "Let There Be Peace" and the strange and muddied remix of "Work That Magic"-- the later being strong on in it's original form; it didn't need this remixed and water-downed "Capricorn ISA Remix".
The liner notes are polite and read like a researched fact sheet, and for someone not familiar with Donna's material it's acceptable. With the fan base so niche that she always had (to her delight or chagrin, depending on the decade),it would have been cool to read something that didn't read like yet another love letter. A performer so contradicting both professionally and artistically, I would have liked to have read something about the sessions themselves, and where she was at personally at that time in creating these songs. David St. Mark of Daeida Magazine (www.daeida.com) has done several EXTENSIVE interviews with the likes of Harold Faltermeyer and Bob Conti (both who've worked with Donna during and after her Casablanca years). It's these interviews that do make a far more interesting and relevant discussion for liner notes. The fans already know how great she was, and the information in this collection (and even in the extended reissues of these albums these cuts are culled from) is just recycled info a Wikipedia entry could provide. The fans are the ones buying this, we already know how great she was. My only suggestion would be to have Mr. St.Mark do liner notes worthy of legacy so fascinating and interesting. The fans will be the ones buying this, we don't need a reminder of how great she was. We were there from day one.

5.0 su 5 stelle Amazing CD Sound Quality; Great 80's-90's Collection; Plus liner notes! 18 agosto 2015
Di M. Williams - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Audio CD Acquisto verificato
This 32-track U.K. collection, focusing on her years with Geffen/Warner Music/Atlantic covers the years 1980-1992 (except for the 1983 album "She Works Hard For The Money" which was a contractual obligation album for her previous label). While there have been many collections that include & focus on her 70's hits on Casablanca Records, this one focuses entirely on her post-Casablanca career and contains many of her best artistic efforts. The remastered sound quality on these CDs is amazing! The best that these tracks have ever sounded. The albums involved were:

-THE WANDERER (1980): "Looking Up", "Cold Love", "The Wanderer" & "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'"
-I'M A RAINBOW (1981, unreleased until 1996): "Romeo" (also on "Flashdance" soundtrack), "Highway Runner" (also on "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" Soundtrack), "You To Me", "True Love Survives" & "I'm A Rainbow"
-DONNA SUMMER /Quincy Jones (1982): "Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)", "State Of Independence", "The Woman In Me" & "(If It) Hurts Just A Little"
-CATS WITHOUT CLAWS (1984): "Supernatural Love", "Suzanna", & "Eyes"
-ALL SYSTEMS GO (1987): "All Systems Go", "Only The Fool Survives" duet with Mickey Thomas from Starship/Elvin Bishop Band & "Dinner With Gershwin"
-ANOTHER PLACE & TIME (1989): "This Time I Know It's for Real", "When Love Takes Over You", "Breakaway", "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt" & "Love's About To Change My Heart"
-MISTAKEN IDENTITY (1991): "Heaven's Just A Whisper Away", "Work That Magic", "When Love Cries" & "Let There Be Peace"

Some of the tracks on this collection are the single/radio remixes or in a few cases extended versions. While this collection is very inclusive, I feel 3 essential tracks are missing: her recording of Bruce Springsteen's "Protection" from the 1982 Quincy Jones album featuring Bruce on guitar, her cover of The Drifters' classic "There Goes My Baby" from 1984's "Cat's Without Claws" album, which was a chart hit, and the excellent track "Fred Astaire" from 1991's "Mistaken Identity". Some would also make the argument for her cover of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from the 1981/1996 "I'm a Rainbow" album to be included. Since disc one is 63 minutes & disc two is 75 minutes, there would have been room to include some of these additional tracks (they could have also left off "(If It) Hurts Just A Little" & "Suzanna") .

Instead of lamenting what's missing, there's tons of great stuff included, making this an ESSENTIAL album for ANYONE's collection! Tracks 11-13 on disc one is a great place to start: All 3 of these should have been Top 10 hits (and still could be if they were re-released as singles). "Highway Runner" is a rocking good track, as good as "Hot Stuff" & further cements her being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for any doubters. "Breakaway (Power Radio Mix)" was released as a U.S. single but never charted; it's a shame because it's among her best & easily the 2nd best track on the "Another Place & Time" album. And "Heaven's Just A Whisper Away" from the 1991 "Mistaken Identity" album did not get a single release due to the record company's viewing of her solely as a "dance" artist. This powerful power ballad is right up there with Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" & Vanessa Williams' "Save The Best For Last" which were both released around the same time by rival record companies. Atlantic Records missed the boat on this one, but it's here for you to appreciate & enjoy now. (I always thought Tamyra Gray, from the 1st season of American Idol could do a killer cover version of this song).

So quit reading this long-winded review & BUY THIS ALBUM NOW! You will never regret it.

5.0 su 5 stelle A unique and well-crafted collection of songs 8 giugno 2015
Di @129_BPM - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Audio CD Acquisto verificato
This collection differs from most others as a result of its depth and diversified content. Not only is Donna's 80s and 90s work less often represented, but when it is, it's normally the same few songs. This unique set offers both the hits form this period, as well as tracks that are rarely experienced by the casual listener. Gems such as "Breakaway" in it's Power Radio Mix or the beautiful ballad "I'm a Rainbow", make this collection well worth the price of admission.

A superb offering, not to be missed!

Collector’s Alert: This release also includes two exclusive song versions not available elsewhere on CD; “Supernatural Love” [Remix/Single Version], and “Work That Magic” [Capricorn ISA Remix].

4.0 su 5 stelle I love my Donna! 22 giugno 2015
Di Don A. Lee - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Audio CD Acquisto verificato
Let me start off by saying that I'm a HUGE Donna Summer fan. I know my stuff when it comes to Donna. I have an open copy of every Donna Summer album, plus a sealed copy. I also have things in my collection that most Donna fans don't have. I was a teenager during the eighties when most of the material on this album was released. I absolutely loved her eighties albums.

So, I'll start off by saying this is a pretty good collection. Just about all of the singles are here except for one glowing emission, There Goes My Baby. Why they decided to omit TGMB and stick Suzanna in there, is a mystery. The remixed version of I'm Free would have also been a better choice. Another big mistake here is that this set claims to include the 7" inch remix of Whatever Your Heart Desires. The version on here is actually the album version. And finally, what happened to the radio edit of The Woman In Me? It's not on the Donna Summer album re-issue either. I much preferred that version because it didn't have that silly breathy spoken word intro.

Over all, this is a really good collection. I would have chosen different album cuts, but that's just my taste. Keep in mind that this collection only covers her Geffen and Atlantic albums during the 80's and 90's. She Works Hard For The Money and all the rest of her Polygram/Mercury/Casablanca recordings are not covered here. Universal Records still owns the rights to all of that material. That said, it would be nice if all of the powers that be would get together and agree to issue a proper boxed set that included all of her material. She really deserves that. It would be awesome!
