5.0 su 5 stelle A Master of Film Noir 25 agosto 2012
Di Charles L. DeFanti Jr. - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
You don't have to be a genius to deserve a biography, but it helps. If you're a neglected or forgotten one, all the better, because there are so many surprises. So it is with Dana Andrews, now rescued from undeserved obscurity in Hollywood Enigma. Rollyson is our foremost theoretician of the biographer's craft, with uncanny resources for exploring his subject's genius and the details that formed his complex, often tormented life.
Of course it's the films that matter most, and Rollyson will make you want to go back and see not only Dana's acknowledged masterpieces -- Laura, The Best Years of Our Lives, and The Ox-Bow Incident, but also his lesser films, and even the bad ones, where Dana alone shines.
This is the story of a tragic, but ultimately good man, a brilliant artist whose love and dedication to his craft did not prevent his stumbling into crippling alcoholism. The biography is all the more beautiful for being so sympathetic to its subject -- the best life of an actor I have ever read.

5.0 su 5 stelle More Than a Tribute to My Father 25 settembre 2012
Di A Customer - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida
Some have written that Dana Andrews, my father, should have been nominated for or won an Academy Award. I know that Dad would have considered this biography at least as great an honor. Carl Rollyson saw his 'minimalist' performances for what they were: considered and deliberate, rather than 'wooden'. My father would have found the exhaustive research, attention to detail, sensitive interpretation of his acting, recognition of his determination and complexity, as well as of his decency and devotion to his family, to be an extraordinary tribute. That's not what Rollyson set out to do, though. While he had our family's cooperation, all agreed that the biographer would go wherever his story took him. He didn't avoid personal failings or some less than memorable performances. He uncovered so much which we would never have known about our father's work and our parents' lives. This unexpected, extended visit with Dad over the last few years, through visits with Rollyson, close to a thousand e-mails, and the results of his tireless no-stone-unturned efforts, has been a joyful one for me.

5.0 su 5 stelle Fine Biography of Andrews 28 agosto 2012
Di Maurice Bendrix - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
Fine biography of the film star Dana Andrews. The actor's most important legacy is his (1) work in film noir, particularly his work on Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Fallen Angel, Boomerang, Ox-Bow Incident, While the City Sleeps, and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, and (2) his performance in The Best Years of Our Lives. Biography's strong points include coverage of Andrews' background and an analysis of Andrews' best films, particularly The Best Years of Our Lives and, perhaps surprising (to some), Fallen Angel. Rollyson makes a strong case for Andrews' impressive screen presence at his peak, and we can hope that this book leads to a reanalysis of Andrews' noir work particularly in the context of the leading directors with which he worked--Lang, Preminger, Milestone.

5.0 su 5 stelle "Hollywood Enigma" Dana Andrews' story a tale you should read 16 novembre 2015
Di Abbe Buck - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
Carl Rollyson has knocked it out of the park. The sheer essence of telling this man's story, yet not the psychological angst of the addiction he had, but the duality in having to live with it and having, day in and day out, to soldier on and be responsible for his family, is an example to anyone who finally had to face, and extinguish a lifelong demon. Dana Andrews was an alcoholic for over 40 years. He remained an actor, husband, father, friend, and more. Did the addiction affect things that he may have done even greater? Sure. But that he survived and is remembered with his story by Rollyson and assistance from his children is one great tale. And yes, he should have been nominated for an Oscar in 1946.

3.0 su 5 stelle An Appreciation of a Filmic Icon 19 settembre 2013
Di Curt Tow - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
This biography, featuring extensive passages from interviews and correspondence, is a meticulously researched book. And as such, this reader is very impressed with the wealth of information conveyed - even the minutiae of practically every aspect of Dana Andrews' life: his progenitors, upbringing, years of striving and disappointments, his Hollywood successes, and his character assets and flaws.

Within the rubric of Hollywood star biographies, this book is a fine example of detail and objectivity. It is certainly not a hagiography as the reader learns of Andrews' multi-faceted character and personality - both admirable and pitiable.

But there are certain passages that elevate this biography above others with the author's revealing analyses of particular movies. His interpretation and appreciation of scene after scene in Andrews' iconic film, "Fallen Angel," are so satisfying to read. For here within these several pages, the chronological account of a person's life is abandoned for a fascinating, insightful dissection of a film. This passage should be at one's side while watching this movie, as it will enhance one's viewing experience with his astute and perceptive writing. The significance and intentions of seemingly imperceptible gestures and details are brought to one's attention - adding to one's knowledge of Preminger's direction.

The reader yearns for more analytical (and even tangential) writing throughout this book - as it deepens one's empathy of Andrew's life and experiences - instead of a mere recitation and accounting of his life.
