Sinossi

When unexpected circumstances leave Honor Penworthy destitute after the death of her grandfather, she is forced to leave her Maryland plantation—and the slaves she hoped to free—and seek refuge with a distant relative. With no marketable skills, her survival hinges on a marriage arranged through the Quaker community to local glass artisan Samuel Cathwell. Samuel is drawn to Honor, but he has been unwilling to open his heart to anyone since scarlet fever took his hearing as a child.

A move west brings the promise of a fresh start, but nothing in Honor’s genteel upbringing has prepared her for the rigors of frontier life with Samuel. Nevertheless, her tenacity and passion sweep her into important winds of change, and she becomes increasingly—though secretly—involved in the Underground Railroad. Samuel suspects Honor is hiding something, but will uncovering the truth confirm his worst fears or truly bring them together as man and wife?

Set against the backdrop of dramatic and pivotal moments in American history, the Quaker Brides series chronicles the lives of three brave heroines, fighting to uphold their principles of freedom while navigating the terrain of faith, family, and the heart.

3.0 su 5 stelle Unique story, a few qualms with some details 13 luglio 2015

Honor is the story of the title character, Honor, and her marriage to a deaf glassblower, Samuel. Very much a marriage of convenience story, it follows the couple as they move from Cincinnati to a smaller Ohio town in order to build a life for themselves. Because they are situated in an area that provides one of the quicker routes for escaped slaves to make it to Canada and freedom, Honor very soon finds herself in the thick of things, even though Ohio was considered a free state at the time of the novel.

This novel had me intrigued for two reasons - namely that Honor is a Quaker, and I remember loving a childhood book about Quakers helping escaped slaves at great personal risk, and that the male lead is deaf. There aren't many main characters that are deaf, and I really appreciated reading Samuel's story. Although he was deaf, he still lead a successful business as a glassblower, which, in and of itself, it a really cool detail in the story - talk about a potentially dangerous profession!

Although the writing style is not entirely to my liking, the storyline kept me invested in the story, and while Honor's character is admirable, I really found myself more interested in Samuel than I did Honor. Other than him, the other characters tended to blend together for me. I actually wanted more details about deafness during that time and a little more clarity on the signing that Samuel used to communicate. It seemed very easy for Honor to learn it, and I was a little skeptical that it wouldn't have taken longer to learn to communicate that way. There were a couple of times that the dialogue felt clunky, perhaps because of the way Samuel's speech had to be communicated.

Despite some of the qualms I had, overall, I did enjoy this story. If you are looking for a light romance with some neat historical details, I recommend Honor. I have the second book and plan on reading it later this summer.
4.0 su 5 stelle Well-written romance set in my hometown 4 giugno 2016

This is a great, well-written story and I am anxious to read the other two books. I like that it took place near and in Cincinnati, my hometown. It was interesting to learn more about my town's history. I admire Honor for her strength, courage and faith. Samuel was a wonderful hero with problems that plagued him, but he persevered anyway. It was interesting to read that not only the slaves and free slaves experienced prejudice, but so did Samuel, Eli and Caleb since they were hearing-impaired. I love that Honor learned sign language.
I enjoyed learning more about Quakers--I only read one book about them when I was a kid, "Downright Dency" by Caroline Dale Snedecker, and the author's writing is similar to that--very rich and detailed.

There were some formatting problems so the poems and letters were hard to read, but I really liked this book.

5.0 su 5 stelle Would have loved to give 10 stars for HONOR and Lyn Cote! 24 maggio 2015

What a fabulous book! I have told friends about this as I read it, and now I've completed the story, I am happy to post a review for this wonderful tale and its author, Lyn Cote. Though I read romance often, I don't generally gravitate toward inspirational or historical. And yet the cover and the blurb drew me in. I'm so thankful, because Ms. Cote's characters, as they dealt with their own personal difficulties, helped inform me as I deal with my own. God is always with us, no matter the circumstance, no matter the hardship. I look forward to the release of the sequel, BLESSING, and in the meantime will read more of Ms. Cote's work as well as that of other inspirational authors. I think it came along at just the right time for me...
5.0 su 5 stelle An incredible history lesson in a novel! 13 maggio 2016

I absolutely love the detail of the main characters. There was a wonderful variety among them and each one was very rich and three dimensional. I felt like I knew them individually and wasn’t just reading a story about them.

The plight of women and slaves in 1819-20 is so well presented that my heart broke for them throughout this book. I also had never thought about how a deaf person would have been viewed and treated during this time period before reading this story. It was truly an eye-opening book for me.

I knew before reading this story that the issue of abolition was a very touchy subject. It really came alive for me though more than just being a phrase I had heard. The anguish that many of the characters went through when discussing it was palpable!

At first it took awhile to connect with the characters but it came. The Lord blesses the faithful not always as we humanely think or want but for His honor . No sexual content thank you. Only one complaint the kindle books in this series are kinda pricey, so I will not be able to purchase anymore in the series. I do recommend the author very talented.
