5.0 su 5 stelle Extreme courage in extreme times 8 settembre 2011
Di John Gibbs - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
When Germany invaded Denmark in 1940, some Danes went to extraordinary lengths and displayed extraordinary valour in fighting back against the Nazis. The story of one of Denmark's war heroes is told in this book by Mark Ryan. As a pilot in Denmark's Fleet Air Arm, Thomas Sneum was immensely frustrated when the country was surrendered without a fight, and he began looking for ways to escape to England and join the Royal Air Force.

After discovering a German radar installation on Fanoe, Sneum managed to escape to neutral Sweden and visit the British Legation with drawings and a report. Instead of being rewarded with a place in the RAF, he was recruited as a spy and sent back to Denmark. After gathering more vital intelligence including photos and a movie, he, together with a friend, escaped to England in a stolen de Havilland Hornet Moth, a harrowing adventure which required a mid-air refuelling.

After training in England, Sneum was parachuted back into Denmark to continue his work as a spy, and when his cover was finally blown he escaped by walking across the frozen sea to Sweden where he was arrested and then returned to England where he was suspected of being a double agent, and subjected to extensive cross-examination and a long period in jail.

Unfortunately the parts of the story dealing with Sneum's aviation escapades seem to indicate the author's unfamiliarity with the world of pilots. All altitude and distance measurements are given in metres, which would only be understood by pilots from China, Mongolia or the former Soviet Union, as the rest of the world measures altitude in feet and distance in nautical miles. Further, it seems surprising that an experienced pilot like Sneum would not have known about carburettor icing when he encountered it, as it is something which all trainee pilots learn about.

Notwithstanding these minor flaws, the book tells a compelling and apparently true story of one man's heroism, the enormous obstacles that he faced, and the extreme lengths to which he went to overcome them.

5.0 su 5 stelle Thomas Sneum had an incredible life and was fortunate to have the best possible author for his biography 29 settembre 2011
Di Bill Franklin - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
The subject of the book, Thomas Sneum, is most unusual and gifted, the author does the best job imaginable with his research and writing. If you review the author's background you may find that he is as gifted as his subject though his life is more conventional. His family says thank goodness.

The accumulation of knowledge, including many interviews with Mr Sneum, for the book by the author took most of a decade.

I am surprized that it took me three years to find the book, it deserves more wide acclaim and readership as it is one of the best biographies written and with the twists and turns of Mr Stenums life including the interest and suspense of the challenges he made for himself, no one could have written a better account.

Whether you choose the paperback edition or the Kindle version as I did, please find yourself a block of time before you begin as you will not want to stop until you have completed reading the biography. Great work, Mr Ryan. Thank you.

And thanks also to Amazon.
5.0 su 5 stelle Hitlers quest to govern the world and Englands quest to stop it at all cost. Our hero's bravery will inspire you to the end. 5 aprile 2015
Di LibertarianReview - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
A current author interviews a world war 2 hero who provides a superb story of what it was like to foil the Nazis in their quest for world domination. An adventure steeped in bravery that is hard to imagine including an escape by plane hardly able to fly to safety-- yet believe it or not--it was so.
Author Ryan weaves a tale through interviews with the superb spymaster. The author covers the infighting that was spying and what England was noted for and unnerved our hero. This very hero, takes time out for the ladies but does not compromise his safety or the safety of Allies trying to stop the juggernaut that Hitler envisioned. This is a long book--powerful and full of surprises--I had a hard time putting it down. Y0u were there through the danger and then the glory. Enjoy this book and learn how the game of spying was fact not fable.

4.0 su 5 stelle An amazing story of one man's journey during WWII 14 ottobre 2011
Di S. Decker - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
Each person who lived through WWII has their own story. This book embodies Tommy Sneum's story. Working as a spy for the Allies against the Nazi regime that occupied his homeland, Denmark, the young Sneum had to endure what most people cannot even imagine. This book takes the reader through his war in as much detail as is possible a half century later. Sneum's own words take the reader into his mind and thought process as he struggled towards his ultimate goal, flying for the RAF against the Germans. However, that goal would have to be postponed as he was recruited as a spy and thrust into the middle of political infighting, usually to his detriment.

I could not put this book down. As I read on, I found it difficult not to put myself in his position and ask, "would I have the strength to do the same thing?". This is an amazing story of wit and survival that the reader will not soon forget.
5.0 su 5 stelle fantastic biography! 4 aprile 2014
Di James LaMar - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

This book is very well written. I am impressed with Mark Ryan's style and his excellent organization of this comprehensive material. Tommy Sneum developed a lot of trust in his abilities to record the amazing events of his life, which is no mean achievement. Sadly, Sneum has now passed away. But, fortunately for the world, Mark Ryan has collected and written these events in a respectful and memorable way that captures the vibrant energy of this incredible individual, so that you feel you have actually met him yourself and might be listening to him speak to you, personally.
Ryan does a fantastic job, and this book is a must for anyone interested in World War II and the resistance movements in various countries.
