Dr. Deanna Nichols is a geneticist searching for a cure to save the world. After the war nearly destroyed it by releasing an aggressive virus, it was the vaccine that killed the humanity’s chances for progress and survival. Deanna feels guilty because she has participated in creating the vaccine, and General Mackenzie never lets her forget that.

Their luck changes when they are contacted by the convicts held in a secret military prison hidden in the arctic desert. The C deviance criminals are willing to negotiate and provide unaffected DNA samples in exchange for supplies and a visit paid by the doctor herself. Suddenly there’s hope, so Deanna embarks on a dangerous journey to a grittier reality than she had expected.

Could a woman alone save the world?

The first half of the book was pretty good. The second half, the problem resolution, was boiler plate bad guys, good guys, shoot, run, be scared, shoot, run, be scared before running and shooting to finis. The one thing this book has going for it is that either English is a second language for the author, or that it is a translation from not-English. The text is just bent enough to give it a tantalizing lurchiness of the textural shoe not fitting quite right.

This was a really interesting read.

I loved the writing. Ioana Visan has impeccable writing. Her words draw you in. The characters are well thought out and you can definitely feel what is going on with them. There were a few questions that I had but most were answered.

The one thing that made this a hard read was although I enjoy apocalyptic reads, this one had a lot to do about the military. But it really didn't was the weird thing. But the fact that Deanna is a geneticist basically working for the military (not really but sort of) and then has to go to a locked tight prison to save the world. Well, it all sounds fabulous but for some reason it just didn't get me. I honestly think though that Ioana did a fabulous job of writing this story and that the only reason I didn't like it was because it was not my cup of tea.

And! Even though I didn't love this, I'm very curious where these characters are going to go next. It ends on a cliff hanger and made me want to know what is going to happen to these people and more importantly the population.

I completely recommend this to anyone that enjoys apocalyptic but with a more military edge. At 100 pages it is well worth the read, especially if you enjoy those genres.
4.0 su 5 stelle Short but Good Post-Apocalyptic Fiction 22 novembre 2012

Dr. Deanna Nichols is a geneticist in a post-apocalyptic world. Only a few million people are alive, after the war and subsequent release of a deadly virus. The human race was saved by a vaccine, but the vaccine had an unanticipated side-effect. In order to save the human race from extinction, Deanna is sent to a secret military prison in the arctic, where a small group of prisoners exist who had never been vaccinated. Her job is to collect DNA and somehow, the human race will be able to survive and thrive again.

Tom, a convict, has taken over the prison. Working with the former prison staff and other convicts, life here is tenuous at best. But he is willing to assist Deanna with her mission, recognizing the importance of her success.

This book takes place in the near-future and happily, has absolutely no zombies, flesh-eating monsters, werewolves, space aliens or other silliness. It's suspenseful and moves along at a good pace - though it certainly could have been much longer. It was generally well written and well edited (though "orientate" is not a word!). I enjoyed reading it, though I was never clear on why Deanna was chosen to go on such a dangerous mission, given her own value to mankind, and I thought that MacKenzie's character could have been developed a bit more thoroughly. It's a good book for those looking for a quick read and realistic post-apocalyptic fiction.

5.0 su 5 stelle Very enjoyable and unexpected 29 ottobre 2012

I wasn't sure how Visan was going to pull off an apocalyptic novella in only one hundred pages, but she has a gift for writing, and she does it superbly. Dr. Deanna Nichols was a part of the process of creating the virus that in turn, infected most of mankind. If the guilt of that isn't heavy enough, she's not having any luck formulating a cure.

The General wants her to go into a prison, where the inmates have unaffected DNA. But they have a few stipulations - mainly that Deanna come herself and they want some supplies. Deanna doesn't want to go because the General believes that it is through their DNA that they can create children that are virus free, their future.

Deanna wants to save the people now, not just the future. But the General doesn't want to waste valuable time with that. But, she may not get to do either of them because the inmates are staging a prison break while Deanna is there.

I like reading apocalyptic novels, but I haven't quite read one like this. It has a very unique and clever premise, with wonderfully developed characters moving it along. It's quick paced and I finished it before I knew it; I was so engrossed in the story. Definitely recommend this one - Highly enjoyable!

5.0 su 5 stelle A Uniquely Twisted Apocalyptic Novella 18 luglio 2012

I received this book in return for a honest review from the author. Dr. Deanna Nichols is a researching working on a cure for the people infected with the virus that wiped out most of the planet. She is also responsible for the virus that was used to end a brutal war, feels guilty so she's trying to find a cure since the vaccine that was created has some negative affects. Deanna used to work for Dr. Larsen but he passed away, he didn't have a problem killing people in the name of science but Deanna does. The option to obtain untainted DNA comes up when the General is contacted by a maximum security prison they didn't know was still active reached out looking for supplies.

The General sends Deanna in to the prison with only a guard a former war leader who's also a criminal in the prison. He thinks that the only want to save man kind is through a new generation of children and by using the criminals with the uninfected DNA they could do just that. However Deanna wants to save the already infected people, but under the orders of the general she enters the prison. However her time is short lived, the criminals are staging a break, and if the former war leader can't save her life, all could be lost forever.

I was really surprised by this book I'm always a little nervous with the whole Apocalyptic stuff, but it was surprisingly very good. The characters are well written, Deanna comes off as a the kind of woman who made a mistake and is willing to risk it all to fix it. The story is face paced but full of entertainment, not a dull moment to be found. Your instantly drawn in, wanting to know more. I finished it in one sitting, because I just had to know. I loved the ending it just left me with a smile and wanting more. I found it very unique, and full of twists and turns.
