Description: A hard durable plastic material encases the Hoont LED Solar Spotlight and it comes in two pieces, the ground stake, and the spotlight with the attached solar panel. The large solar panel is approximately 5 ½” x 3” and is adjustable within about a 90 degree angle. The LED light is also adaptable for a downward, straight on, or upward angle, lighting up a pathway for at least 25 feet. On the back of the solar panel is a switch for Off, Low, and High, we leave ours on Low, this setting is sufficient.
I believe that one has to have realistic expectations from an outdoor solar spotlight, and I am testing the Hoont LED Solar Spotlight during winter, the worst time of year regarding the intensity and time length for sunlight. Due to the angle of the winter sun, any area that receives direct sunlight is shaded a short time later. In addition, we have many overcast and cloudy days, which is not the optimum for any solar device.
Performance : However, the Hoont LED Solar Spotlight works and it works very well. Even during overcast days, the Hoont Solar Spotlight comes on at dusk, and delivers bright light in the evenings, until the solar charge it has absorbed during the day depletes. From my experience, it is both the intensity of the sunlight and amount of time that the solar panels receive from the sun that determines the length of time that Hoont Solar Spotlight remains lit in the evening. It is December, and our backyard faces north. The Hoont Solar Spotlight lights up between 4:15 - 4:30 PM and stays lit past midnight; therefore, the Hoont LED Solar Spotlight not only meets our needs, but also actually exceeds our requirements.
I received the Hoont LED Solar Spotlight Free for a test and an evaluation, and I was not under any other obligation.
When I received my light, I immediately installed it in the yard where it would provide light to an Ocotillo plant and produce shadows on a wall. This way I could watch it through the night to determine how long it stays on and how bright it is. In testing the high/low settings, I determined that we only needed the light to be on Low to produce enough light for us. When fully charged, the light lasts most of the night, and then cuts back into a very low state, where it's about as bright as a typical 4w nightlight is inside of the house. Right now we are getting about 10 hours of daylight in a typical day. Where this is installed near a wall it's only getting less than half of that time in the sun due to the wall causing the unit to be in the shade all morning. This is likely typical for many installations.
After a typical day of sunlight, this light goes on and stays at full brightness for about 4 hours. Then it stays on but cuts down to a very low lighting state about like a typical 4w interior night light bulb. One other thing to mention is that the LED used in this light is the white type, a nice clean white light but it's not yellow tinted as many as used to from incandescent bulbs. I would call this color "cool white light". If this is a pro or con depends on your situation and likes color wise.
Here's my summary of pros and cons:
Pros: +No need to install transformers, wiring and dig up the yard.
+No need to pay monthly for the power consumed.
+Turns on and off by sunlight, no need to switch.
+Replaceable internal battery in case of need a year or more down the road.
Several of these Cons may not be clearly negative but since they are different than other options I placed them here.
Cons: -Not as bright as wire powered lights can be.
-Doesn't stay on brightly all night long.
-Has a whiter tone rather than the yellowish look of incandescent.
All in all we like these lights, we appreciate the look, the light and the effects it has on our yard. I have attached a picture of this light on our ocotillo plant in the front of the house. You can see it's very bright (on the low setting).
4 stars, this light works well as intended but doesn't last all night. We were provided a light for reviewing
For best results you should charge the light for a full day before using it at night. However, even when I took it out of the box for the first time, it had enough battery power to brightly light up my dark room.
This light comes with one replaceable AA lithium battery that according to the instructions is supposed to last about 18 months before replacement. My experience in dealing a lot with solar landscape lights tells me that most likely you will need to replace the initial battery with a better one in less time than that. But we shall see. Replacement of the battery is accomplished by removing the screws on the back of the solar panel.
The stake is plastic which is typical of most landscape lights in this price range but it does appear sturdy. I do wish it had an extension to extend the height of the light. The light's angle can be adjusted as well as the solar panel.
The lighting as I said is bright with its 4 LED bulbs and so far has lasted throughout most of the night and automatically comes on at dark when you have it switched on. Like most solar lights, I don't always get a full night (usually dependent on the amount of sunlight it gets during the day) but you do get several hours of it lighting the area. It so far has held up to the rain and sun and wind as the fall comes full force here. Our winters aren't so severe with cold or snow so I will reserve judgment on how well this holds up over time.
This is easy to install in the ground with really nothing to put together. I put mine by a landscaping wall and it lights up the area and look nice.
Overall, a good landscape light. 4 stars.
