Harry Houdini's one-time apprentice holds fantastic secrets about the greatest illusionist in the world. But someone wants to claim them . . . or silence her before she can reveal them on her own.

Boston, 1926. Jenny "Wren" Lockhart is a bold eccentric--even for a female vaudevillian. As notorious for her inherited wealth and gentleman's dress as she is for her unsavory upbringing in the back halls of a vaudeville theater, Wren lives in a world that challenges all manner of conventions.

In the months following Houdini's death, Wren is drawn into a web of mystery surrounding a spiritualist by the name of Horace Stapleton, a man defamed by Houdini's ardent debunking of fraudulent mystics in the years leading up to his death. But in a public illusion that goes terribly wrong, one man is dead and another stands charged with his murder. Though he's known as one of her teacher's greatest critics, Wren must decide to become the one thing she never wanted to be: Stapleton's defender.

Forced to team up with the newly formed FBI, Wren races against time and an unknown enemy, all to prove the innocence of a hated man. In a world of illusion, of the vaudeville halls that showcase the flamboyant and the strange, Wren's carefully constructed world threatens to collapse around her. Layered with mystery, illusion, and the artistry of the Jazz Age's bygone vaudeville era, The Illusionist's Apprentice is a journey through love and loss and the underpinnings of faith on each life's stage.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Magical Page Turner! 25 marzo 2017
Di Angela B. - Pubblicato su

This year I discovered author Kristy Cambron and quickly became a fan, adding Cambron to my "automatic buy" author list!

I first read her enchanting book "The Ringmaster's Wife" and then immediately read her poignant debut novel "The Butterfly and the Violin" (stock up on Kleenex for that one!). But her latest release stands apart as it delves into the realm of mystery!

"The Illusionist's Apprentice" is a magical page turner that captivates with an atmospheric setting and complex characters! A historical romance enriched with mystery and beautiful imagery. I was intrigued by chapter one (such a GREAT opening!) and entranced until the end.

As always, Cambron's attention to historical detail is superb! The main story takes place in the late 1920's, while some flashbacks scenes depict the early 1900's. I especially enjoyed the scenes featuring Harry Houdini and his fascinating, vaudeville world!

However, the real star of this novel is definitely Wren Lockhart. Wren is strong yet feminine, unique yet relatable. Smart, brave, savvy, and compassionate—Wren is truly an unforgettable heroine!

You do not want to miss "The Illusionist's Apprentice"!

As soon as I saw the gorgeous cover for this book, I knew I HAD to read it (it also didn't hurt that I adored Kristy's previous release, The Ringmaster's Wife).
Kristy does an outstanding job bringing the mysterious back halls of vaudeville and the Jazz Age to vibrant life in this book.
We begin the book knowing very little about Wren Lockhart, but as the story unfolds, we're giving glimpses and the defining moments of her life... and little is as it seems. The mysteries in this book are cleverly woven and not easy to solve (I actually gasped in shock a few times as I read). Elliot is the best of heroes and I loved getting to know his character and see his character grow as the story progressed. Wren is the true heroine of this beautiful story though and her story is truly wonderful.
I highly recommend this book!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

5.0 su 5 stelle A rich, fascinating story! 29 marzo 2017

Such incredible depth, rich settings, and mysterious characters. The mystery pulled me in, but the characters and their journeys kept me reading. This is my absolute favorite book by Kristy Cambron yet. (YET.) The complexity is stunning, but the grace, faith, and love...oh you guys. Just don't miss this one. Please.

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are completely my own. A good review was not a requirement.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Kristy Cambron did an excellent job weaving history and fiction together to create a memorable story. I liked how she combined a little romance, mystery and suspense together. Wren's character was believable and complex. It's always fun to learn about new things and time periods. I didn't know a lot about illusionists before reading this book.

I have read all of Cambron's book and this one was my least favorite. The 2 main characters were well developed. However, they mystery that's was being solved was not that interesting. I wasn't dying to find out what happened. I finished the book, but didn't feel like it was a page turner. I'd recommend d her first book instead. This book was fair.
