Descrizione prodotto

Prince Temmin incurred his father's wrath when he took Supplicancy in the Lovers' Temple; his devotion to the Gods outweighed his father's rage. Now he faces a greater challenge: his forbidden love for Allis, the human host of the goddess Neya. If he doesn't conquer his emotions, he may bring the Lovers' deadly fury down on them both--but pride and desire stand in his way. When a murder rips his greatest support from him, Temmin turns to the magic book of his ancestors to find answers to his need both for revenge and for a woman he must not love.

All the while, enemies inside and outside the kingdom are plotting against the monarchy, and the gods prove once again they are no one's friends.

Set in a Victorianesque world of magic, sexuality, political intrigue and military conquest, "Son in Sorrow" is the second book in the epic fantasy series "An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom."

MeiLin Miranda came back from the dead, though she is not a zombie, to write books. She lives in Portland, OR with a husband, two kids, two cats, a floppy dog and far, far too much yarn.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Solid Second Book 30 marzo 2012
Di M. Hogarth - Pubblicato su

While "Son in Sorrow" suffers from some of the inevitable weaknesses of "middle book syndrome"--it builds tension that it does not and can't resolve by the end of the book--I also find myself liking it better than the first book in the series, mostly because the conflicts the author set up were not at all addressed or evolved in the directions I've come to expect from fantasy novels of this type. It was a refreshing pleasure to see those conflicts taken to their logical, but usually ignored, conclusions, and to see relationships (familial as well as romantic, another often ignored arena) explored in all their messy, painful complexity.

Many of the secondary characters steal the show from the protagonist, which is fine with me but might put others off who are expecting a more focused narrative. Similarly, people who read book one might come into book two with expectations created by other series that we'd be spending more time in the Lovers' Temple, getting a blow-by-blow account of the training there. I thought better of the author for not bothering with what would have been an expected and titillating but ultimately unimportant-to-the-narrative tangent. Miranda consistently makes these unexpected choices when writing, a relief after reading one too many cookie cutter fantasy novels from Big Presses.

In general, then: I continue to like this series. It is difficult reading, but intriguing because it deals with topics that earlier fantasy series didn't, and that later ones pretended to but actually glamorized without actually considering their ramifications. It is fine to have sacred prostitution if all the sacred prostitutes are revered and descended of angels in a nation that adulates them. Miranda's Tremont is far more human, more believable, and has more empathy for real people.

I am deeply curious how this series will wrap up, and regret that it will probably be a year before I find out.

I was hooked immediately! I love the stories inside the story. I love world-building that allows me to fill in the gaps and fall into the story and live it, instead of standing outside wading through endless boring details. So many fantasy writers make the mistake of overwhelming the reader with details that only slow the reading process down. Not Miranda. She has an amazing flow to her prose, that keeps the reader tantalized and wanting more, more, MORE!

I really enjoy the story - I'm attached to the main characters and I think Miranda's writing is very good - believable and earnest. I wish this one had more "intimate" parts of the Intimate History. I was missing that in relation to Book 1. But I am looking forward to Book 3, very much. And with patience as well because I know she will want to get it right to her liking, and I trust her talent and direction.

They have read this book and the first book in the series multiple times. I am desperate to know what happens next in this story! How did Teacher get cursed? Why? What is Temmin's destiny? So many questions. I never review books, but liked this one so much I had to comment. I believe the author has had health issues, but I wish the next book in the series was on its way to my Kindle NOW!

I should never have begun. There isn't a third book. Why did I begin, knowing heartbreak was right around the corner??
