5.0 su 5 stelle Must read new author 12 luglio 2012

First off, I must admit that I'm normally a murder mystery or international spy intrigue reader who enjoys the writing of Harlan Coben, David Baldacci, Vince Flynn, Dennis Lehane, Lee Child and others of that ilk. However, I do like to occasionally depart from that genre and try something a little different. With "An Irish Miracle", that's what I did, and I'm glad that I did. No murders, no spies here. What is here is a heart-felt exploration of the salt of the earth human condition. The characters are farmers, barmaids, jockeys and horse lovers, and each of them comes to life with vivid character development and real world emotion.
The timeline shifts between the 1960', the 1970's, and 2011, and the geography takes you back and forth between Ohio and Ireland.
The description of the two places is fully developed, and the changing speech patterns, accents and colloquialisms are artfully written and intertwined.
This book will give you insight into areas of life you had not likely seen before, and, as it does, will make you think, laugh, and tear up. That's a lot for a book to do. This one does it, and does it well.

The stories in Mr. Mahan's "An Irish Miracle" read at once like modern day morality plays, while at the same time they are fanciful and other-worldly. He weaves both mediums seamlessly.

As each chapter unfolds, Dillon (the protagonist) and others demonstrate the courage it takes to feel deep emotion and empathy, which reminded me to look at my own family stories and some of the pre-judgments I have made and misunderstandings I have left untended.

Also, I enjoyed Mr. Mahan's ability to elevate animal companions' roles in the stories, as they are very important archetypes, influences, and mainstays in many people's lives, and it is humbling to realize their constancy despite all odds.

I felt like I set foot in Ireland, and I enjoyed the experience. I was thinking the thoughts of the characters and I could see what they looked like and what they were wearing. I could smell the wood fires, the hay, the grass, and I could see the countryside. It was quite magical.

Most importantly and perhaps profoundly, Mr. Mahan's book inspired me to write again - the abilities to inspire and write being some of the greatest gifts humans possess. I can't wait to read more from Mr. Mahan.

This was a fun ride. I rate books by how they make me feel. Does the book move me to feel any emotion? If it does, then I believe the writer has accomplished his/her goal. "An Irish Miracle" does a fine job in making the reader feel many things. I literally laughed out loud and I had a few tears. You will fall in love with the story and characters. I really enjoyed how the author tied together a complex family structure. As you read, you will undoubtedly see parts of your own family in each character. THAT is a fine way to know if a story is good. The kindness, love and humor of author comes out in the story. I'm a fan!! Loved it and am anxiously awaiting for the next!

5.0 su 5 stelle An Irish Miracle 16 luglio 2012

Being from the same clan as Rob, I was especially interested in his fictional view of our heritage. Some of the stories reflect the Irish lore that was passed on in our early lives. He captures the local family pride that infuses us. He also spins a wonderful reflection of a clan member who leaves but never forgets the clan. Rob creates the strong relationships that exist among clan members and the issues that evolve when one of them deviates from the ethos of the group. For me, "An Irish Miracle" was a fascinating and meaningful read.
