Would life have been different for Johnnie if she’d been named after a woman rather than her dead uncle? Or if her mama hadn’t been quite so beautiful or flighty? The grandparents who raised her were loving, but they didn’t understand the turmoil roiling within her. And they had so many, many secrets. Why did her mama leave? Would she ever return? How did her Uncle Johnny really die? Who was her father? Now Johnnie Kitchen is a 43-year-old woman with three beautiful children, two of them grown. She has a handsome, hardworking husband who adores her, and they live in the historic North Texas town of Portion in a charming bungalow. But she never finished college and her only creative outlet is a journal of letters addressed to both the living and the dead. Although she has conquered the bulimia that almost killed her, Johnnie can never let down her guard, lest the old demons return. Or perhaps they never went away to begin with. For Johnnie has secrets of her own, and her worst fear is that the life she’s always wanted—the one where she gets to pursue her own dreams—will never begin. Not until her ghosts, both living and dead, reveal themselves.

Kathleen M. Rodgers’ stories and essays have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies. Johnnie Come Lately is her second novel. She is also the author of the award-winning novel, The Final Salute, featured in USA Today, The Associated Press, and Military Times. She lives in a suburb of North Texas with her husband, a retired fighter pilot/commercial airline pilot, and their dog, Denton. For more information, go to

Kathleen Rodgers writes an 'every woman's' book. The first word to come to mind was 'real.' You could relate on so many levels. Outstanding writing on subjects close to the heart. A must read.

5.0 su 5 stelle Such a compelling read! 3 aprile 2016

I purchased this book on Amazon when it was 99 cents and I feel I got the best bang for a buck in a long, long time. Johnnie has struggle with bulimia since her early teen years and as an adult, although sometimes fragile, finally conquers it with the help of her kind, compassionate husband. As with all eating disorders, it still comes back to haunt her during stressful times. Her formative years were spent with her grandparents, a mother who was absent from her life for lengthy periods of time, and a father, marked unknown on her birth certificate. This book really touched a tender place in my heart and I found it so compelling, I literally stayed up most of the night just so I could finish it.

I think the reason it resonated so with me is that my niece would have been 41 this month, the same age as my youngest daughter. She struggled with anorexia for two years before she passed away just days before her high school graduation. Her heart simply gave out. She was the valedictorian of her class, and her mother, through her grief, asked if she could read her daughters speech she had prepared.
Johnnie Come Lately will give hope to others struggling through eating disorders. I love how the author developed her character. I feel as if they're real and I want to read more about them!

5.0 su 5 stelle Stunningly beautiful 24 ottobre 2015

Johnnie bears more than the name of a ghost; she bears the secrets that come with it. Her father only an unknown shadow, her mother flying away like a bird at the first sign of winter, she's left to her own self doubts and no clear path to adulthood. Watched only by the ghosts of the living and the dead, wearing the uniform of her pain, she declares war on her body, controlling the one thing she can - the food that heals or harms. Time and a marriage puts that eating addiction behind her and although her life is stable, it is not the one in which she could be more than just another's person's wife, another person's name, but herself.

In a moment of unwitting honesty, she reveals her deepest secret, overheard by the one it would hurt the most. What follows is a richly layered story of lives that connect, even as they push one another away, of haunting memories, and fluttering hopes. It is a story told in both actions and words as Johnnie chronicles her questions for both the living and the dead, in the words of her journal.

Ms. Rodgers ability to lend heart and soul to each character is a rare gift and I closed the book with not just tears in my eyes, but with the feeling I had just witnessed the most intimate parts of a stranger’s life, rendering them no longer a stranger. I closed the pages with sadness for the small tragedies that can define our human condition, yet with hope for the transforming power of forgiveness.

This is a remarkable piece of writing.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Bighearted Texas Story That Won't Let You Go 28 dicembre 2014
Di Ellen Thornton - Pubblicato su

I just finished reading Johnnie Come Lately and immediately returned to page one so I could have the pleasure of reading again this bighearted story about the Kitchen family of Portion, Texas. Quite simply I do not want the story to end. And I’m glad to learn author Kathleen M. Rodgers is writing a sequel. I love the characters in Rodger’s novel, the generous voice of the story, its language, insights and humor, the wise descriptions of emotion, the plotting, the perfect-pitch tension, pacing, and drama in even the smallest scenes. It was so easy to identify with the Kitchen family and the sorrows, failures and challenges in their lives, but most especially it’s easy to fall in love with Rodger’s engaging protagonist, Johnnie Kitchen. Johnnie has come a long way since the days early in her life when her emotionally unstable mother disappeared and the terrifying eating disorder bulimia nearly killed the vulnerable young girl. We meet her after she’s married and become the mother of three young people in various stages of taking wrong turns and finding themselves. But the focus is Johnnie and her quest to make sense of old family secrets and tragedies, her desire to win her husband’s forgiveness and her longing to find her mother and learn the identity of her father. Throughout, she’s stalked by the terrifying demon of self-destruction. This novel is a little like a spring day in Texas beneath storm clouds and slanting rays of sunshine, where, alongside a gritty highway, millions of exquisite wildflowers bloom.

5.0 su 5 stelle In Johnnie's Kitchen 7 gennaio 2015

I've just finished reading Johnnie Come Lately, a novel by Kathleen Rodgers. After three days of living in Johnnie's "kitchen" I feel as if I have been ripped, torn, redeemed, and healed!
It is not easy for me to become so absorbed in a character that she creeps into my thoughts throughout the day, but Johnnie Kitchen did just that. Once I started reading, I couldn't get her character out of my mind. Even now, I see her standing at the Soldier's Statue or peering out the attic window with her husband's arms around her.
As a former food abuser, I identified with Johnnie's earlier struggles with food, with herself, her husband, her three children....and her mother. I recognized the hard-won battle to rid herself of this terrible malady and was impressed by her show of strength.
Reading Johnnie Come Lately is a bit like being introduced in person to new people because from the moment I began reading, all of the characters sprang from the page and came to life: Johnnie, Dale, Mr. Marvel, and Mama became real people to me.
So, to call this book engrossing is an understatement.
By the time I'd finished, I knew every inch of Johnnie's kitchen, every struggle with her loving husband, Dale, and every sassy comment made by Cade, DJ, and Callie Ann. I felt Johnnie's pain and grief and rejoiced in her satisfaction when, at last, Mama talked!
This is a rare and wonderful book about a military family that took me along on a roller-coaster ride through the life of an ordinary woman living an extraordinary life.
I have a feeling that Johnnie Kitchen will stay with me for a long time. Well done, Kathleen. Well done!

5.0 su 5 stelle I am so pleased to have found this author 4 settembre 2016

I discovered Kathleen Rodgers through Southern Writers Magazine, bought Johnnie Come Lately on Kindle, and tore through it in four days. What gripped me initially was this author's fearlessness in subject matter; that she handled the main character's struggle as a recovering bulimic with such finesse is a feat admirably achieved. The reader actually feels the grip of Johnnie's eating disorder, without it being off-putting. It is part and partial to the story line, but only in as much as it helps the reader to understand it as a subtext to the rest of the story. In Johnnie Come Lately, subjects such as marriage, motherhood, the sins of the family, and the secrets we keep are woven throughout the story in a voice and manner I found readily accessible. Kathleen Rodgers knows what it means to be human. She writes with insight, honesty and mastery of craft. I found this book to be a gripping page turner rife with an authentic, Texan feel. That the main character's journal entries were woven throughout this book in such a way as to chronical her inner journey, to me, was a touch of brilliance. I am so pleased to have found this author. I'll be looking forward to her future books.
