— WHY CHOOSE WOOD —
Now the big question is: WHY do you need a wooden spoon? There are multiple reasons:
(1) Wood is strong; you can stir food without breaking a handle like a plastic one can.
(2) It's insulated; if you're making a dish that is sensitive to temperature changes, it won't suddenly heat up a section of your food causing unwanted chemical reactions.
(3) It can resist higher temperatures—the most important reason. If you accidentally leave it leaning on your pot or pan, it won't melt; this is especially useful for forgetful people.
I originally bought the Cuisinart Bamboo Solid and Slotted Spoons, 2-Pack, but realized I may need more spoons, and nicer ones. Enter: Joseph Joseph. If you own any other Joseph Joseph products, you know they have beautiful modern designs, that are also very functional (like their futuristic Duo Carve Magnetic Knife and Fork Carving Set).
— SPOON TYPES —
This set includes five different wooden utensils: a spaghetti server, slotted spoon, batter spoon, solid spoon, wooden turner, and a rotating storage stand to hang everything on. They all do their jobs well.
— DESIGN —
The design of the handle is made of silicone, with a hidden weight to lift the end up, which keeps your food from touching any dirty kitchen counters. I took off one star because this didn't work for some spoons, a little spaghetti sauce and it tips over. I was a little disappointed by this. The one thing it's supposed to do, and it doesn't work. I've yet to leave the silicone handle on a hot pan, so I can't tell you if it will melt. Obviously, don't do it unless you want to risk ruining your handles.
— MAINTENANCE —
The spoons are easy to hand wash, but don't leave them caked in food, or soaked in water too long. I recommend using Butcher Block Conditioner, a food-grade mineral wax, to apply to all your wooden kitchen utensils to maintain their luster, durability, and keep that nice wooden look over time.
If you prefer nylon utensils, Joseph Joseph makes a similar looking carousel tool stand, the gorgeous Elevate 100 Collection 6-Piece Kitchen Utensil Set, which also comes in a variety of colors and styles, and works well as an alternative or alongside this set.
I've been using this carousel a lot since I got it. It not only makes the kitchen look nicer, it's a solid, good set of wooden utensils. Recommended.
When you first take them out of the packaging, they look really nice. The weighted handles worked great and kept the "business end" off your counter top. Of course, if you have stuff on the end that out-weighs the handle, it'll tip over but that's pretty obvious and it would be silly to take stars off for that. What I didn't like was that after the first wash, the wood lost its smooth texture and became...fuzzy? That's the best word I can come up with. I don't believe the wood flakes or chips off, but they are definitely not as smooth as before I washed them. I also have issue with their "spaghetti server." The traditional spaghetti server has its prongs come up higher so that it can scoop and contain your pasta; the design of the one included here is awful. I tried using it with spaghetti, penne, rotini...pretty much any pasta that I would normally use this utenstil for and you drop most of what it picks up.
Cleaning is a little difficult if you need to get in between the slots in the slotted spoon and in between the prongs of the spaghetti server, but I'm not sure if it's because of the design of the spoon or the wooden material. I wouldn't purchase this again, but might buy their plastic version instead.
