When a master thief escapes from prison, brilliant detective Bettina Rothschild must put him back behind bars before the scandalous fiasco destroys the Ministry of Justice. Her investigation leads from decaying cemeteries where talking ravens conspire to booby-trapped warehouses where wondrous flying machines are built in secret, and even to a legendary island in the sky where an ancient tomb hides a deadly secret.

The thrilling chase proves taxing for a young woman who relies on her cane and her steamcarriage to get about, but that's where a good husband steps in. While Bettina picks locks and interrogates suspects, her beloved Arjuna defends her from the most brutal and bizarre assassins in the steampunk city of Eisenstadt, but in the quiet moments in between they make time for a little romance!

As the clock ticks down, Bettina finds too many mysteries still remain. How did the thief escape from prison? How can he afford to hire so many killers? And why would he go to the magical Drifting Isle only to steal a giant beetle? Discover the answers in the fast-paced mystery thriller!

Hi, I'm Joe. I write books. Lots of books. Mostly fantasy and science fiction. I like to create new worlds where history, mythology, and fantasy collide in unpredictable ways. And I think a good story should be, you know, fun. Although it never hurts to learn something cool, too. I also like writing about heroines that my daughters can respect and admire, characters who blaze their own paths with fierce personalities, bright minds, and unbreakable spirits. Find out more on:

4.0 su 5 stelle A fun enjoyable adventure 28 agosto 2013

Overall, I found this to be...a fun enjoyable adventure indeed. I thought the story was well written (with only some minor point..more on that later) especially regarding to the main characters; Betty and Arry. I really enjoyed the playful banter between them. You could feel the love, respect and admiration they shared for each other. I thought they played off one another perfectly with her more serious side and his charming, playful adventurous side. Add in some coil guns and jobs as detectives and they're like the perfect couple. I'm hoping the author chooses to write more books about them. There were definitely plenty of things they could expand on from this particular story...things like The Shadows, Inselmond and the Minister. I'd love to see what happens when Arry finally takes her back to his country. Will she really still bring all her dresses and jackets and still wear them as she said at the end? even though she'll be sweltering...?

More about this book. I liked the thrill of the chase that was the major part of the story. Each time they got close you had to wonder, is then they'll finally catch them? I thought the pacing was perfect. Not too drawn out but not over before you know it. It was also fun to have the events occur in drastically different locales with incredibly different modes of, boat, autocarriage, and autogyro!!! I didn't see the ending of this book coming which is a good thing because I can usually predict the outcome of a lot of stories.

While I absolutely loved this story and hope the author brings us more of their adventures, there were a couple things that detracted from the book, ever so slightly. First, there were a few times when the author went back and forth from steampunk style words to regular...most notably going from "autocarriage" to "car" when describing the same vehicle. "Car" seems so very out of place in a world that is suppose to be Steampunk. This actually leads to my second thing, that I didn't hate too much but others might. I specifically set out to find a Steampunk novel to read...pretty much for the first time...and didn't feel Steampunk to me as much as it just felt like the story took place late in the 19th Century. I didn't feel as the author did enough in describing the setting to get me to feel like I was joining the characters in a steampunk world. Granted there were "coil guns" and 1 "autocarriage" and some Victorian clothing....but that didn't feel like it was enough. For me, it didn't make me like the book less. Better done, it could have made me like the book more.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone, no matter what your prefer to read. I usually do sci-fi fantasy but enjoy a change once in a while.

Bring on the next adventure!!!

Lovely mix of a crime thriller with fantasy & steam punk. Great use of the new Drifting Isle world. Excellent characters, great pace.

I only have one suggestion - I fully understand that each book is individually written & owned by each author, however I would suggest that if you are going to make use of a character which has been written by another author, & who featured as a main voice in their book, have that author look over the passages concerned. The voice of one character was not quite consistent between this & the prior book. But still, only a small point!

I really enjoyed this new world. Steampunk without over-reliance on the milieu, main characters with a fun, smart, and flirty relationship, and great fantasy elements combine to make an intriguing world. (You can't go wrong with shadow assassins, talking birds, and a floating island.) The pace slowed a bit for me during the middle, but the final chapters tied up all the loose ends and left me satisfied. What more could you want?

I have not read the first book in the series, so I started this book at a disadvantage. While I was familiar with steampunk, I was not familiar with the world. This did not prevent me from enjoying this novel immensely. I really liked the banter between Arjuna and Bettina. The fact that birds could talk was unusual and added color to the story. I plan to try at least one of the other books in the series.

4.0 su 5 stelle A book I enjoyed 14 febbraio 2014

The book, despite other reviews, held my interest, and I was intrigued by the characters and their stories. Arry's s story seemed a little rushed and forced though. I would have loved to seen it drawn out and placed correctly. Still a very good book though, and I couldn't put it down.I've never been one for steampunk but the story, and the world, makes it seem intriguing and something I could jump into. Well done.
