Set in backwoods Florida in 1979, KARMA KAPINSKY: MY LIFE AS A FREAK is a comic novella with monkeys, little people, plastic surgery, Dixie-circuit drive in movies, and one very earnest teenager's efforts to make it BIG.

A hilariously poignant look at one girl's attempt to bridge the great divide between grand ambitions and absurd reality, the story is told from the point of view of Karma, a fourteen-year-old girl with Hollywood aspirations, growing up in 1979 in a backwater Florida town populated entirely by retired circus freaks.

Her best friend is the former professional Fat Lady who runs the town bookmobile, her grandfather is a Little Person undergoing an extensive makeover in an attempt to become the local news anchorman, and her mother is a Disneyphile who travels with the carnival dressed as an ever-revolving series of generic costumed characters - mostly recently appearing in Biloxi in blue faux fur as "Goof-Goof the Dancing Dog."

Barry Manilow, B-movie moguls, and "The Power of Positive Thinking" figure prominently in Karma's quest to achieve what no other freak has: The Big Time.

Here is the recipe for this refreshing treat: start with Scout from "To Kill a Mockingbird". Cross her with a Jean Shepard or Garrison Keillor style monologist. Amp it all up with the sunshine and smart-mouth jokiness of classic Florida-style humorists like Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry. Add a dash of bitters. Give it a little good-natured bizarro twist. And there you have it.

Karma Kapinsky is a fresh, appealing, observant, strong-willed no-nonsense pip in the absolutely finest sense of don't-tread-on-me girl power. She is complemented by an amazing and fully realized group of neighbors, family, friends and acquaintances, each of whom adds a distinct bit of something to the overall story. Indeed, Karma's deadpan acceptance of and comfort with the lunacy that surrounds her is what allows the story to work as well as it does.

This tale is tight, spare, well-plotted and full of zip. Karma's one-liners and deadpan bits just keep coming, and the effect is rich and dazzling enough that occasionally you need to take a break because you realize you are going too fast and missing some good parts.

So, a delightful change of pace and a deeply good-humored book. A very nice find.

When I first started reading this novella, I wasn't at all sure that I was going to like it. I was so wrong! It has fun, sadness, family dysfunction, chuckles, tears, circus freaks, mischievous monkeys, a bookmobile, and genuine unconditional love with no strings attached! If you start to read Maria's story, do yourself a favor...don't stop! It's well worth it. Trust me.

A love story to great stories and the people who tell them, we've all felt like Karma Kapinsky in our lives, feeling there's a bigger life out there if only we knew how to get it. Both fantastical and grounded, this book reminded me of Louis Sachar's Holes meets the Wizard of Oz. I laughed, I got choked up, I was inspired and entertained. You'll see yourself in Karma or you'll wish she was your best friend-- either way you'll love it. Going to send copies to my sister and some of my best friends, you'll want to, too.

This short book was a fast and delightful read. You can’t help getting behind Karma in her quest to save her grandparents’ house, become rich and famous—and overcome an ancient curse. The characters are strange and hilarious without exception, and Karma herself is endearingly persistent. I loved this upbeat and cheery tale! You’ll love it, too.

I'm sad to leave Karma behind on the pages of this great book. I fell in love with her and wish we could be friends. She's got heart, humor, guts and a unique and wonderful way of looking at her wild world. Her desperate drive to fulfill a dream and save her family are felt within us all. The book was always entertaining, and the author is a very clever writer. Though I would love to meet Karma in person, I'm sure I'll be taking her with me...
