It is difficult to know where to start. Linda Zercoe is telling the story of her battle with cancer but unlike most people who write a story about surviving cancer, she has survived multiple cancers. She bares her soul to you from these pages showing her strength, her weakness, her spirituality, and her attempt to find answers. She allows you to come into her life and discover how this affects not only her but those that she loves. Linda opens your mind to Western and Eastern medicine, shows how a doctor needs not only skill but a connection with his/her patient that allows them to listen and hear their story. It shows how our health care system with the need to see many patients each day in order to survive can break the chance of that connection between doctor and patient, sometimes with disastrous results. We see the importance of friends, love of family, belief in God, and peserverance. I don't think many would find the strength within that Linda has found. Bravo, Linda!

This memoir explores waht a real life looks like when having to experience multiple emotional and medical challenges. There's no hiding here and no holding back, and as a result, the reader is taken into the experience and mind of the author, being left with the realization that she is speaking to the universality of facing adversity. It's all here. Fear, disappointment, frustration, and anger, intermingled with trust, discovery, determination and love. The writer shows how these qualities are all experienced when faced with a life threatening scenario, not once, but time and time again. From young widowhood to career change to remarriage and children, the author has to hold all the balls in the air while being told many times over twenty years that she has a new cancer. If her response cannot be to act like a "Superwoman" than she needs to find the inner resources that are "merely" human instead in order to keep going. This memoir is that story. Zercoe is fearless in exposing her raw emotions,coupled with thoughtful strategies, all while trying to live her life. The reader is completely engaged in routing for her as a "kick ass fairy."

After reading this book you will have a better understanding of someone who has cancer, and how it affects the whole family. Linda is a gifted writer who is willing to provide us her life story with such honesty and touching ways. She not only writes about fighting numerous cancers but she gives us a clear insight into her whole life, including the upsides and the downsides. While reading it I found myself fighting along side her during every step of her journey to get her well and her family. It is a must read for those who know people who are fighting similar diseases so they can better understand what these people are going through, and how to better interact with with them including doctor-patient relationships. It is also a must read for those who just want to read a real profile in courage. Her unimaginable resilience will encourage readers to take positive attitudes to empower themselves with a great self determination to go beyond what doctors are telling them. They should research all they can about their illness so they can better understand it. They can then better help in their recovery plan so that it may produce results that far exceed what anyone else expected. Great read and true story.

Excellent read. Easily more captivating than the last memoir I read (Eat, Pray, Love). Linda Zercoe's life may not be any fairy tale, but the sheer amount of misfortune, disease and loss she has triumphed over would seem to be as far-fetched as any fiction penned by the Brothers Grimm. Ms. Zercoe embodies the fortitude necessary to make the most of a difficult life, excelling over the years, despite her hardships, as a nurse, accountant, wife, mother, musician, artist, singer, dancer, and, of course, writer. Through it all, she balances her strength with grace, moxie with equanimity--a true "kick ass fairy".

That isn't to say this book is all doom and gloom, however. The author certainly knows a thing or two about having a good time, whether it be helping her son design and build robots destined to battle in the ring or singing karaoke at the top of her lungs at one of the many parties she hosts.

I would recommend this book to anyone afflicted by cancer, but also to anyone who has ever faced adversity on any scale (i.e., everyone). Ms. Zercoe demonstrates how to make the most of the hand you've been dealt. The game of life is "riddled with the drama of ups and downs, the proverbial thrill of victory and agony of defeat". Though she notes that "the agony isn't so bad" if you take it in stride and see "not winning as an opportunity to refine yourself, the player of the game." Linda Zercoe gives powerful new meaning to the word LIVE.

Yes, this book is about the author's life long fight against a multitude of cancers but it's much more than that. It's about will power and determination. It's about perseverance. It's about becoming your own advocate and not allowing anyone to dictate or talk down to you. I was enthralled with every chapter and cringed at every new invasive test, diagnosis and surgery but I never felt it was depressing. The author's a pragmatist who deals with reality head on. That takes a tremendous amount of endurance and this lady is one tough cookie. Highly recommended.
