5.0 su 5 stelle I HIGHLY RECCOMEND This Autobiography 11 maggio 2014

This book slowly "parts the curtain" (without ripping it open, as so many other writers would have probably done) on many legendary Broadway performers when writing about legendary writers, performers, etc...., but Kitty is graceful and gentle in describing them and not at all acidic, just as one would expect a lady of her charm to be. She is never harsh, except on herself (overly so, in my opinion), and one is left with the feeling that this woman could have said so much more about some of these legends, but was too kind and caring to do so, which is exactly opposite of a minority of people think of the way she was in real life. Kitty was really a kind, considerate and loving woman (I knew her for 11 years), and cared about everyone she knew, from the highest in society to a firefighters son (me) equally. She is especially kind when writing about her mother who was, to put it kindly, an arrogant, self-centered bitch. Read the autobiography and you will see what I mean. Many people would have "folded" under the negative influence of such a mother but, credit to the author, Kitty rose above it to become the beloved individual that she was during her lifetime. May she rest in eternal peace (and I know that she is).

After reading Moss Hart's autobiography, I wanted to read Kitty, just to catch another glimpse of this great man. Well, I can only say that I was so impressed with Kitty Carlisle Hart that finding out more about Moss truly took a back seat to finding out more about this woman. This book was well written and endearing. Definitely a great companion to Act One, but a first class act all on its own.

4.0 su 5 stelle Like I was telling so-and-so, name dropping ain't so bad. 12 novembre 2012

Most baby boomers like myself know Kitty from two pieces of work, very disparate: a panelist on To Tell The Truth and as the ingenue in A Night at the Opera. For many years I did not realize that she was married to Moss Hart nor even know who the heck he was.

After reading her book, I can tell you that if you like to read a nostalgic look back at the author's life with very little psychoanalysis of other people, then this is a good book to read. I know I like this type. She also does plenty of name-dropping. That's fine by me as well. I like to know how famous people interacted during the 20th century.

Kitty lived her life dedicated to being Moss' wife. She planned on meeting him and getting him to fall in love with her. Much to her dismay, it would be ten years before he would and their union would be abbreviated as his health failed him. It reminds me of the one about the hypochondriac who had etched on his tombstone: "I told you I was sick".

All in all, a very easy, entertaining and enlightening read. Enjoy it.

The world Carlisle grew up in is as dead as the dodo, so her book is nearly a work of anthropology. At times her concerns and interests seem awfully silly and superficial, but that is the world that was open to women then. Her charm and good humor are always in evidence however.
