I discovered the book just recently. My work involves a lot of coaching and development, for both my direct reports and other managers and emerging leaders at the University of Illinois. This book is "must have" material for anyone in a management or leadership role, or in a general HR/people development role.

I like the library of 67 competencies. I've been introducing it to many of the managers I work with. It is a great conversational tool. I print out the library, hand it to a colleague, and ask, what are the 5-7 competencies that differentiate high performers from the mediocre in your job area? The answers are always enlightening.

I use the book also to guide my own development. It is extremely useful to have a language for all these distinct competencies that can help you advance in your career. Once you can name a skill that is not well developed, you can formulate a plan to develop it. Without differentiating power of language, it's hard to recognize you have a weakness that you need to develop.

I also recommend the book "FYI - For your Improvement" by Michael Lombardo, who co-authored this book.

This is the most helpful, straight forward way to tell a member of your staff about the problem that you see with their actions, what the cause is likely to be and give them ways and resources to go to work on it for their benefit.
