I don't usually rate stuff on Amazon, but I just had to give kudos to this book. I'm teaching myself German, and while there are a lot of decent beginner and intermediate materials out there, there's nothing good for people trying to make the jump between intermediate and advanced. I'm not yet comfortable with the advanced stuff, including the short story collections that are supposedly for people at my German level.

Enter this book. It's just PERFECT for my level, and it's actually really fun to read. The writing is straightforward and good. Normally the "humor" in language textbooks is pretty awful, but the humorous passages in this book are actually funny. The chapters are short, so it's perfect for reading during a commute, or at other times when you've got just a few spare minutes. I'm definitely really thankful that this book is out there.

Plus it's kind of cool that this young guy seems to be writing and publishing a bunch of useful things independently. Thanks, man, and keep up the good work!

At first, I thought this would be too difficult but I began improving very quickly. With the Kindle and the Slavoed German English dictionary I'm rapidly increasing my vocabulary and comprehension. I like the characters. The stories held my interest. The small illustrations are curious -- as if drawn by a fourth grader. I quickly bought the other two books in the series and recommend this to anyone learning German at the beginner plus or intermediate level. If the author writes more, I'm buying.

I lived in Germany more than forty years ago and at that time spoke passable German. I recently moved back and wanted to refresh my language skills, so I tried a couple of Andre Klein's books. They really are a big help. The stories are not gripping mysteries but more along the lines of something like "Dragnet" (am I the only one that remembers that series?). However they are entertaining and incorporate a lot of useful expressions and vocabulary. At the end of each chapter there is a list of words and phrases with English translations, so it's easy and convenient to review. I recommend these stories as a great learning tool for intermediate to advanced German speakers and plan to purchase more stories in the series.

I bought and read the whole series of books by Andre Klein listed in Amazon to freshen my German skills. These are nice easy reads with good vocabulary choices and a list of new words at the end of each short chapter. The comprehension questions verify understanding. These books are for someone who has studied the language and was never fluent or has forgotten much of the vocabulary. Simple sentence construction and the avoidance of difficult idioms makes for a productive read for me with 12 hrs college German 30 years ago.

Of course, everything depends on your level of German speaking/reading, but for me this was ideal. The language was conversational, as advertised, and the stories in all four of the books were basic but interesting mysteries. Naturally, at this level of language the stories can't be too involved, and I think that just the right balance between story level and language level was met very well. I would recommend these to late first year or second year German students who are interested in actually learning German, rather than fulfilling a graduation requirement.

Idioms are translated in the vocabulary at the end into their English equivalents, rather than their literal translation. I would encourage readers to literally translate the German for themselves. It can be an insight into the thought process relating to the German language.

The one shortfall, and a minor one, that I have noticed is that when the nouns are defined at the end of each chapter, the definite article is not generally given. Sometimes the alert reader can figure it out, but it would be nice to have it in the vocabulary at the end.
