4.0 su 5 stelle Chilling little mystery... 28 ottobre 2012
Di Calamity Jane - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

To be fair, scarecrows and corn mazes creep me out (I got lost in one alone after closing and it was by pure luck that the farmer found me) so the subject matter of this book interested me from the get-go; however, that also meant that I had high expectations. Aside from some of the 'teen-speak' as another reviewer perceptively mentioned, this short story did not disappoint. In addition to the supernatural elements surrounding the scarecrow, this story is a very well-written 'whodunit' mystery that had me guessing until the very end, and every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong.

Adding to an immersive storyline, the author also manages to portray a small town setting extremely well. Having grown up in Montana, I can appreciate how well she captures that atmosphere. As far as editing, this story is very well edited with the exception of a couple of small errors that do not detract from the story in any way. The characters are well developed despite the book's short length. Yes, the dialogue is 'teen oriented' but I do not see that as a negative. It brought me back to my teenage years and what my friends and I used to do for entertainment in a small town. I highly recommend this short story. It's definately a Halloween treat but enjoyable to read any day of the year! (Just keep a watchful eye on any scarecrows you may come across) ...

Well written scarey tale. A group of teenagers go into a cornfield at night when a escapee from a mental hospital is on the loose. Not the most original story but it is well told.

4.0 su 5 stelle A novella for the too-old-for-Goosebumps-too-young-for-Fear-St crowd 25 ottobre 2012

This story is written for a target audience of teens in the range of 13-16. It contains all the fundamental requirements of written suspense/horror in some form or another, but isn't so graphic that it will give the average young teen nightmares. By the time most video-era kids hit 15 they've already seen things like the director's cuts of the Exorcist or Jeepers Creepers enough times to have commited half the scripts to memory. If you can get someone this age to get into reading I think they'll enjoy this one. There are several possible "psycho killers" on the loose ranging from disgruntled former boyfriends all the way up to the possibility of a demonic scarecrow looking to dispense some payback for it's boring existence. The usual batch of generic and stereotypical teens is thrown into a hard to escape scenario and the body count starts ticking up in short order. The novella itself is just short enough to avoid becoming boring and just long enough to generate some excitement without burning out the attention span of most modern youths. As I write this there is a promotion where the title can be picked up for free. There are definitely worse ways to kill some time during the days leading up to Halloween. If you miss out on the freebie offer, it's still worth grabbing at the regular price.

3.0 su 5 stelle If you can get past the faux teen speak it is a good story 25 ottobre 2012

There are parts of this thrilling story that are exciting. However, the main drawbacks are that the author kept including too much superfluous information and worse in a manner where the lead character is telling the information instead of it coming organically from the story. Specifically, when the lead talks about seat belts, the driver not drinking, the leads grades, her description of her former boyfriend are just a few examples. Much of it could have been cut or reworked into dialogue to make a tighter more compact story. As it was these little side trips forced me out of the story. Luckily, most of the jarring commentary is in the beginning and once the action stars it rarely happens.

The main portion of the story which takes place in a corn field was fairly well done, although as usual in horror stories, the characters ignore all of the signs to run and get help and instead run straight into the thing they need to run from.

I think if the story was edited and reworked it would be a fantastic Halloween Scare Tale. However, as is it sounds more like a very good short story written for a high school composition class.
