Sinossi

It's a perfect gift for Father's Day, Valentine's Day, birthdays, graduations, and bar mitzvahs---and a particularly apt gift for men who shave daily but when asked whether they actually enjoy shaving answer, "No. I hate it!" Give them this book so that they can look forward eagerly to their next shave---and that is not an exaggeration. Men who have just started DE shaving frequently write that they wish they could shave more than once a day and look forward eagerly to the next shave.

This is the seventh edition of the complete beginner's guide to traditional wetshaving---brush, shaving cream or soap, and using a safety razor with double-edged blade. It's a major update of the previous edition: longer, with new sections and new information. It covers not only the basics of how to shave with a double-edge safety razor, but also DIY projects and guidelines on collecting. Reviews of new razors and other shaving products are included, and the appendix now includes over 150 on-line vendors as well as forums and reference sites.

The book provides excellent guidance for beginners putting together their first shaving kit and discusses tradeoffs in the options for the initial purchases.

Traditional shaving is enjoyable and thrifty: double-edged blades are as low as 7¢ each---a year's worth of shaves for $3.50---compared to the same amount spent for one single disposable multiblade cartridge. The recommended beginner razor, the Parker 24C, can last a lifetime and uses a head that is both very comfortable and also very efficient, when used according to the techniques described in the book.

The multiblade cartridge's tug-and-cut action often results in skin irritation, razor bumps, in-grown hairs, and razor burn---thus all the "protective" shaving preparations and "soothing and healing" aftershaves now offered. Most men with these skin problems decide that they have "sensitive skin," never realizing that the problem is their daily use of a multiblade cartridge with its tug-and-cut action, made even worse by the shaver pressing hard to try to extend the life of the (expensive) cartridge.

The book also includes a chapter on shaving and skin problems, including information on how DE shaving can help those who have acne as well as how to cure and prevent razor bumps and in-grown whiskers.

The book is a complete instruction manual and guide for those just beginning DE shaving, and it also includes links to a host of resources on the Web that complement the book.

I like very much this book. I found the author "one of us". One who knows very well what he's talking about being an expert from his own experience! It's interesting the style of the book that's not only a "technic" book but also a little bit "philosophical" a sort of "The Zen and the Art of WetShaving with DE"

5.0 su 5 stelle The only book a new wet shaver needs to begin a lifetime of pain-free, comfortable and enjoyable shaves. 3 ottobre 2015
Di Zapper45 - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

If you read nothing else of this review, read this first paragraph. Leisureguy's Guide to Gourmet Shaving the Double-Edge Way, 7th ed. is the definitive, end-all book on wet shaving with a safety razor. There is no comparable book on the market. You will learn to shave with a safety razor—and enjoy it—after reading this scholarly treatise. Shaving *can* be enjoyable. Hook your wagon to Leisureguy and he’ll take you to the promised land of pain-free, comfortable and enjoyable shaves. It does exist. I know, because I’m there.

I’ve been wet shaving since the summer of 2006. I participated in a popular wet shaving forum and sought desperate help from the shaving elders. Leisureguy, among many others, was there and offered helpful recommendations. It took me a little time to perfect my technique and lather-making skills, but I got there. And now, 9 years later, I’ve not touched a cartridge razor. Never again. Leisureguy’s 1st edition of this book was instrumental in helping me perfect my technique.

I recently purchased his latest edition, the 7th, and read it cover to cover. It’s hard to describe just how much more information is in this book as compared to the 1st edition. It’s like the first book was an executive summary and this 7th edition is the full report. It’s amazing. The amount of research that went into every recommendation and point of instruction in this book must have taken many years. There’s specific quotes from wet shavers, citing of surveys and Leisureguy’s personal experience that make up his recommendations and instructions for the new (and seasoned) wet shaver.

In this book you’ll learn why wet shaving is superior to shaving with a cartridge razor—and it’s not just the price point. You’ll learn what equipment generally works well for the new wet shaver who wants to get started, but doesn’t know what to buy. You’ll learn why face prep is so important and how to do it. You’ll learn what makes a good shaving soap or cream and how to properly make true lather with each. You’ll learn how to shave with a safety razor—the mechanics and technique. You’ll learn about differences between various safety razors. You’ll learn not all blades perform the same for every face and why purchasing a blade sampler is so important. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the post shave—to include alum blocks, nick/cut sealers and aftershaves.

You will learn it all.

One item I’d like to touch on that’s so important for many men, especially young men and black men, is how wet shaving can alleviate most if not all problems associated with acne, ingrown hairs and razor bumps. In this book Leisureguy talks about those specific problems and he offers specific steps and products that will help a wet shaver overcome such painful and frustrating face problems. Many men report great success with these very steps and products.

I read a recent review of this book where the reviewer gave Leisureguy one star due to “lots of typos” and “repeating the same paragraphs over and over”. I found just one typo in which two words were not properly separated by a space. That’s it. Also, I did not find there was a repetition of paragraphs. Rather, there is a repetition of main points and ideas. This is a guide, after all. Important points are always reinforced in different ways in any guidebook or handbook. That’s how a learner realizes which points are very critical to any topic of discussion. Sort of like how a professor might slap his book three times as he provides instruction, thereby informing the students: this is an important point!

That one-star review was very unfair and should not be taken seriously.

I wish you pain-free, comfortable and enjoyable shaves, men. This book will help you get there. Thank you for taking me there, Leisureguy.

5.0 su 5 stelle Best book you can get on this 20 maggio 2015

I have only begun reading this new edition but i have read and delved into the 6th edition several times, so I'm confident giving this 5 stars. This is an updated, enlarged and enhanced latest edition. It covers all you need to try or start double-edge safety razor shaving.
It will teach about the different safety razors, shave brushes and how to use then, shaving soaps and creams and their properties. Skin issues and budgets and about whatever you might have a question about in regards to double-edge (DE) shaving. The appendix has lists of online forums, references, and online vendors (by country) for your convenience. 'LEISUREGUY'S GUIDE TO GOURMET SHAVING THE DOUBLE-EDGE WAY' Edition 7.0 - MAY 2015. by Michael Ham, is the very best book on double-edge safety razor shaving. Over two hundred pages of more knowledge than you knew existed on the subject. I gave my 6th edition to a friend who's interested in taking up traditional wetshaving.

5.0 su 5 stelle Fantastic starter guide to traditional wet shaving 6 giugno 2015

Easily the most comprehensive and newbie friendly book about wet shaving on the market. This was the book I used to help guide me in the process of wet shaving.

If you are confused about how to start or have a lot of questions, this is the guide to get you started. The author has done a good job of laying out the landscape of the tools and mechanics of wet shaving. This new 7th edition is easily the best. I also have the 6th edition and this newer edition covers a lot more. Just as a FYI, this book does not cover shaving with a straight edge razor and focuses on double edge razors. The sections about non razor related products are still helpful regardless of the kind of razor you use. The book does a good job of covering shave prep, brushes, soaps, creams, and post shave.

I was the guy that used to shave once a week or only when needed. I was also tired of spending money on shaving cartridges. It was a buddy of mine told me to check out wet shaving. The long term costs of wet shaving are so much cheaper and the process so much more enjoyable. Now I enjoy the process of traditional wet shaving and shave almost everyday. I consider wet shaving my daily moment of zen.

5.0 su 5 stelle A must-have for newbie DE shavers 20 agosto 2016

I devoured this book (pun intended) in no time. I am totally new to DE shaving and having this primer was a great way to avoid the abundance of contradictory advice pervading the Internet. Ham covers a lot of topics including skin issues like razor burn and in-grown hairs. His metaphor of going from cartridge shaving to DE shaving being like going from an automatic to a stick shift is a good one. There are many more details involved, but he helpfully frames most of it as a pleasurable experience. Shaving lately is most likely seen as something to get through, not something to savor, hence his "gourmet" emphasis.

It's also worth noting that a large portion of this book is devoted to debunking popular myths about shaving. Our fathers (or mothers) probably told us how to shave, but it's likely that they weren't any more expert authorities than anyone else. Ham is a fountain of knowledge and gives good tips for the tools of the trade and proper prep, shave, and treatment. He also has sections on body/female shaving issues, so this book is not just for guys. Most importantly, Ham repeats the mantra of "your mileage may vary" (YMMV) throughout. Although he makes his own recommendations, he always tempers it with the advice that you just have to experiment for yourself. Thankfully the options for DE shavers are incredibly varied, and arguably more varied than for cartridge shavers picking up supplies at the corner drugstore. It's fun to go down the rabbit hole of various websites and fora, but it's also helpful to have a seasoned guide like Ham showing giving you a bit more context.

5.0 su 5 stelle I am very happy I started shaving with a safety razor 29 settembre 2015

The author of this book writes a lot for Reddit's Wicked Edge sub-Reddit. He will answer questions there frequently. I am very happy I started shaving with a safety razor. To be completely honest, a lot of the book is about reasons why to shave with a safety razor. I was already convinced when I started reading, so this was a bit redundant. The author has said on Reddit that the book is frequently given as a gift for people who shave with cartridge razors and this is why he explains the reasons for a safety razor so much.
