It seems you can't swing a bag of snake oil without hitting a book from some dubious info marketers offering you their latest "secret to Amazon riches!" or some other ethically challenged book telling you how to lie and cheat your way to "success."

THIS is not that book. And Gaughran is NOT some unknown looking to cash in on the insecurities and hopes of desperate writers.

Gaughran has spent the past couple of years championing the indie writer at his blog, sharing what he's learned (in his own experience and from those in his valuable community). He shares his successes and failures. He also routinely exposes predatory schemes by big publishers and others looking to take advantage of writers. In other words, Gaughran is a writer who tells it like it is, is unafraid of the establishment, and whom you can trust to guide you on your path.

Let's Get Visible is the book I wish I knew about a year ago. It is THAT informative and helpful.

I'll start off by saying this book isn't worth the $4.99 price tag, for various reasons. This book took less than two hours to read, and is filled with information that most authors can find simply by joining online writing groups or talking to other authors. I found I already knew much of the information provided within its pages, and it doesn't really go into depth on many strategies suggested. I also hate to point out that much of the information within is OUTDATED: in 2015, many book sellers including Amazon have already changed their policies, making at least 1/4 of the information out of date or incorrect. It sorely needs an update. The bad thing about this book is that many strategies suggested simply won't work anymore, because by 2015 so much has already changed in the publishing world, and it's only going to change more as more time goes on. 90% of this book is spent detailing on how to manipulate the Amazon algorithms, which could change at any point in time (and I feel like we're about to have a real big change soon). Many of the algorithms mentioned Amazon has already changed.

That being said, there were a lot of small things inside this book that I found invaluable and made it so I didn't feel comfortable returning the book. I'd say this book would be best for authors who haven't yet started their self-publishing journey. Overall, it confused me why this book was so heavily recommended by successful authors; however I suppose that many of those authors used the tactics in this book to gain success during 2013, when it was most relevant. It's worth a read, but should be taken lightly.

I am sure that this book will prove very valuable to most digital authors, however I have to add a caveat: if you are primarily a writer of erotica, romance or shorter works of any kind, most of the advice here will not apply to your work. A great deal of talk is devoted to ENT, Bookbub and POI. Each promotion venue poses unique problems for authors of any of the types of works I have mentioned. ENT will not take anything with explicit sexual content, Bookbub has length restrictions as does POI. Also, all three have some pretty heavy requirements for reviews. The second area where "Let's Get Visible" fails the author of romance and erotica (and all the shades in between) is the discussion of categories. A romance doesn't lend itself (except under rare circumstances) to finding a small niche that can be exploited to the book's benefit. Romance and erotica tend to fall into very definite categories and there's no fudging about it.

All that being said, there were nuggets of information in the book that I will certainly use and I don't feel at all ripped off. I just wish SOMEONE would address the unique marketing challenges writers of erotic romance, erotica and the 'New Adult' books that are so popular today.

Writers outside of the genres I have been discussing should certainly benefit from what this book has to say. It was well written and easy to read.

For the self-publisher and/or emerging writer, this book provides lots of good ideas on how to sharpen your sales efforts, improve your visibility, what to do, strategies to follow and also what to avoid.
It is, however, not an exhaustive guide on the subject, many subjects are very loosely covered, and as a reader you could often wish that he dived deeper into certain subjects that really could make an impact.
Nevertheless, I felt I picked up a few good ideas that I will start implementing immediately.

Right now, I find Lit's Get Visible most helpful as a primer on how Amazon's various lists work (such as Most Popular and Best Seller), which help me strategize my particular marketing goals. It also has some neat ideas, such as teaming with other authors on promotions. LGV tells you how to maximize visibility if you already have some visibility. For instance, Gaughran recommends advertising on super-newsletters Pixel of Ink and eReader News, but those only accept advertisers if the books they want advertised has something like 8 4-star reviews. What if your book doesn't? How do you get there? LGV doesn't address that. I found this book helpful, but had to go back to other books for help on getting to the level of visibility that would allow me to avail myself of all the recommendations in Let's Get Visible. I suggest you view Lets Get Visible as a useful addition to your toolchest of author resources, rather than as an end-all/be-all. If you're just starting out as a self-published author, I highly recommend Gaughran's book Let's Get Digital.
