Sinossi

The final page will leave you breathless.

When Kara Magari uncovers a secret door in the middle of the forest, she discovers (and trips through) a portal to a hidden world full of terrifying things: Ourea. She just wants to go home, but the natives have other plans for her. She clashes with immortal shapeshifters, is carried off by a dragon, nearly dies on several occasions, and somehow becomes the master of an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire. Every time she thinks she's safe, her new "friends" show their true colors.

Kara needs an ally, or she might not survive Ourea's monsters. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn't know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this stranded girl, there's something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Welcome to Ourea, where only the cunning survive.

3.0 su 5 stelle Lichgates Take 18 giugno 2013
Di Cheri L. - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Lichgates: Book One in the Grimoire Saga by S.M. Boyce is a richly imagined fantasy which introduces readers to the strange and dangerous world of Ourea. The characters are nuanced and complex and Boyce isn't afraid to drive them up a tree and throw rocks, or knives for that matter, at them in order to raise the tension level. Her imagery, though occasionally odd, is vivid and pulls the reader deeper into the story. Kara as issues and troubles most can relate to: guilt over the death of a loved one, the challenge of knowing which is the right decision in a world of difficult choices. Braeden, with his hidden past and conflicting loyalties is somehow still admirable and sympathetic. The double themes of choices and trust are universal and beautifully explored.

The only drawback in this book is that Boyce occasionally mixes her images in a way that is counterintuitive. Each time she assigned an auditory sensation to a visual image, it made me pause and go, "huh?" a little bit. Still it wasn't nearly enough to stop me reading the rest of the book, which I enjoyed immensely. I hope you will too.

4.0 su 5 stelle Lichgates is fast paced and keeps readers at the edge of their seats 3 aprile 2017

Original Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Original Review: Bookwyrming Thoughts (posted 2014)

It's pretty rare that I join an author's street team before I even read their book. On the upside, that means I have high hopes for them. On the downside, I have high expectations for said author.

Not exactly a downside for me (because I'm not the one who has high expectations for – oh wait. I do. But school is different from writing). :D

Anyhoo, Lichgates. It's one of those books – out of many others – that I probably should have gotten around to earlier but keep pushing it off. Of course, tacking it onto the 2014 TBR Pile Challenge does little, but it's a start either way.

I intend to finish that challenge this year (2 done, 10 to go).

Let's just say that I don't LOVE this book, – gotta make it to Fangirl level, or at least almost, and that's almost as difficult as getting a 5 as a raw rating, so don't start freaking out – but I actually really liked it. S.M. Boyce creates a very interesting world, and it's pretty suspenseful even if some surprises just aren't really surprising.

Can I also mention the writing's virtually flawless? It's rare – EXTREMELY – to come across Indie authors who do that, and the last one was Megan Joel Peterson and David Estes. I think I did some cartwheels. Actually, a lot since all three were almost read in a row... I was that ecstatic. I'm weird like that. Don't question my logic. :p

For the peeps like me who don't really like slow paced books or have a short attention span – or even a partial one! – then Lichgates is probably a type of book you'll like. It's fast paced and keeps readers at the edge of their seats in anticipation on what may happen next – most of the time.

5.0 su 5 stelle out for a simple hike... and then... 29 agosto 2016

I enjoyed Lichgates in that we are taken into another world full of magic and intrigue, but it took me awhile to really get into it at first. However, as the story unfolded, I grew to enjoy it more, and I was then hooked!

This is the story of Kara; she is hiking and stumbles through a lichgate, taking her into a totally different world. She is thrust into a situation where she learns she has become a key to the future of this realm! It's a heavy burden for a young woman struggling to deal with grief and tragedy... She is always told never to trust anyone when she yearns for a friend to help her on this journey.

S. M. Boyce has really richly created a new world with different "peoples" for each kingdom as well as a variety of magical creatures! The description is vivid enough to picture them for yourself! Her characters are slowly revealed as Kara herself learns the truth about them. There are different motivations to all who help Kara, and she is not afraid to trust her own instincts even against her mentor the first Vagabond. Kara is realistic in that she has no pretensions of being a hero - she knows that she is flawed, even broken - yet, she does her best to accept the challenges presented. You find yourself wishing she could really find just one true friend besides tiny Flick!

As a fantasy story, I like the fact that the world is drawn out and explained as Kara needs the information not only to accomplish her mission but also to survive. Too, the book is a clean story with it's romance or should I say hints of it. What is especially nice is that Kara is not afraid to admit she doesn't know and she will accept help. She also learns and grows with the story so that you are hoping indeed that she will succeed in her quest! (I admit to hovering between 4 and 5 stars simply because it took awhile to grow on me at first but then everything began to come together and move faster, and her journeys were NOT easy...!)

I w recommend this book for anyone wanting to read a story with a good female lead learning about her own strengths as the story folds. It is a nice escape into another world, and I am looking forward to reading more in this series soon as I am curious as to the rest of the saga!
4.0 su 5 stelle Good Start To A Parallel Fantasy World 14 aprile 2017
Di Nikki JS - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

As the first book in this fantasy series, it wasn't too bad. I found the characters interesting and pretty well developed. The Ourea world is well developed, and we get some back stories to several characters. The main story line is fairly easy to follow, with sub plots that add to the intrigue of what is transpiring in Ourea.

We follow Kara Magari who has fallen into a parallel world and has become the new Vagabond of Ourea. This new world is fraught with obstacles and strange beings, which she has to learn and overcome. She meets Braeden, who becomes her first friend, and the adventure begins. She travels to different world's within Ourea by way of lichgates, trying to discover the map to the vagabond village.

While I really did like this story, at times it was a little slow for me. I didn't skip any pages though. I also found that it was a little bit over detailed. I do like descriptions and details, but at times it just seemed too much. That being said, I will be reading the next book, because I really do like the premise of the story line.
4.0 su 5 stelle I was almost halfway through the book before I was invested in the story with is sad because the overall story is very well writ 17 febbraio 2017

If you have ever found yourself in a situation you did not ask for you can relate to this book. Kera dealing with her mothers death and her fathers depression finds comfort in hiking until she stumbles into another world , finds a book and is plunged into an inheritance and political position of danger in an enchanted land she was not even aware of previously. To be honest it took awhile for me to get into this book with all of the description and setting up the story but once I did it took off. I was surprised because I am usually a huge fan of fantasy of this sort but it was hard to connect. I was almost halfway through the book before I was invested in the story with is sad because the overall story is very well written. The different creatures and cultures descried in the world through the Lichgate made the world vivid, exciting and come alive. The looming threat of danger and mystery was always there in the background even in Kera's budding relationship and friendships. It is impossible to figure out who she can or should trust throughout the entire story which actually helps derive the plot. Even when yu wanted her to be able to trust certain characters there was always a small chance that she should not. Mystery surrounds every aspect of the place, people and things around her. As shed try to navigate her way through this new life and new world she realized that even her parents and life on earth were caught up in it all. Overall this was a good debut novel and a good start to the series. The cliffhanger ending bothered me a bit , but I look forward to the second book in the Grimoire Saga, Treason. The story is worth the read just please remember this book sets up the series, and is not a stand alone.
