5.0 su 5 stelle A book for those who dream of Italy 14 marzo 2017
Di Pamelia C. Strate - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
For all who ever dreamed of exchanging your present life for another in a different country but hadn't the how-to knowledge or, perhaps, the courage for such an adventure, this book is for you. Recently divorced and tired of her career path, Karen Mills negotiates a year's leave of absence, sells her home, her car, and most of her belongings and follows her dream to live in Florence and immerse herself in the Italian language and way of life. She details the practical (paperwork, money, etc.) as well as the emotional aspects of being on her own in a city she loves but where she knows no one. Having only enough funds for a year in a tiny apartment with 72 steps from the entrance of the building to her front door, and no guarantee of a job on her return to the US, Karen walked into the life she had dreamed about and one that changed her life in ways even she hadn't imagined.

Because I was fortunate enough to stumble on her blo several years ago, I know that after returning to the US she managed to return to her beloved Florence some years later.......but that is a story for another book.

I love to travel and Italy is my favorite destination in Europe. Since I can only go so often, I love reading the books that tell about making a life there as an expat and this book does that beautifully.

For those who dare as well as those of us who enjoy reading their stories, this is a delightful book from a bravissima lady.

5.0 su 5 stelle I loved - love this book 22 aprile 2017
Di Laurie Feldman - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I loved - love this book. As a long time resident in Italy (14 years in Turin), a Florence newby, and a USA expat, and a somewhat cynical person, I am generally wary of what I expect to be saccharine accounts of moving to Italy and the the subsequent glorious life changes so often recounted in the Eat/Pray/Love/Under/Tuscan/Sun genre. Call me cantankerous or curmudgeonly. I am aware of the actual realities of making this move, and they are not always sunny. I know what this transition means, from personal experience, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Karen L. Mills' book took me aback from the start, not only because of her illuminating and insightful glimpses as she bravely learned a new city, language, and culture, but also because of the back story of a highly professional business woman with a family who decides to follow an inner voice. Her negotiation of detaching from her job, and all of the professional relationships therein, is beautifully described, and a lesson to anyone in the corporate world. Now that I have read "The Life I Imagined", I am finding myself seeking out the various locales mentioned in the book; visiting them, one by one, and recalling - and savouring - the descriptions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Italy, loves travel, or who imagines or dreams....
5.0 su 5 stelle Great read! 3 maggio 2017

A wonderful recollection of the author's quest and fulfillment of a dream, framed by a vivid travelogue and exquisite culinary excursions. Italy comes to life in sight, sound, smell and taste. A self-declared introvert, the author bares her soul and reminds us, after all is said and done, what is truly important.
5.0 su 5 stelle and a level of joy she'd only imagined 25 aprile 2017

For everyone who's ever wondered "What's the use of running away from it all?".....here's your answer: "It will change you and then it will change your life." This is not a how-to book; it is one woman's personal experience of taking a year long break from her routine, to live someplace else and do something different. The adventure led to new friends, new experiences, and a level of joy she'd only imagined. It's wonderful reminder to not settle for 'good enough'....go for the joy! ;-)
