Eventually my assumption was proven false. The outcome of the story was very far from what I had expected, but that's not to say it was bad. There was a great build up of the characters and their lives. Daniel was recently let off of work and this was the last vacation he would be able to provide for his wife and young son, Bernie, for the perceived future. The story takes place on the ride back home from Florida to Ohio. That's where I thought this story would stay.
Even after seeing this story labeled as "horror" on Amazon, I thought there must have been a mistake. How could an author take such a down to Earth set-up and turn the lives of the characters and the readers upside down. Well, Ratliff found a way. I can't get into what this change was since I don't want to give away the surprise twist, but I will say it reminded me of something from a Douglas Adams novel. In a way it could be considered "horrific" to readers if they put themselves in the character's place. For me though, it was on the border of hilarious and absurd. But as I said, this isn't a bad thing. I really think that this could have been a historical entry in the Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy...though much shorter and less caring for those involved (haha).
All in all, read this story. It's short; it'll touch your heart at times. Then it'll either scared the hell out of you or make you crack up a little bit.
Side note to finish this off: I don't know if the author intended for me to find bits of this comedic or not, but in my reading of this I more found humor in the tragic event in which the main characters were involved, rather than shock and horror. I think this lead to me enjoying the story more in the end.

Daniel and Gina, along with their son Bernie, are heading home after a trip to Disney World. Daniel just lost his job, but they decide to go on this vacation anyway. It may be the last one they can take for a long time.
Bernie and his father have a game they play. Bernie loves map, he collects them. At random points in their trip, Daniel would ask Bernie how much farther they had to go and he would look on the map to track their progress.
Bernie had one map that was special. A map given to him by an old woman when they stopped for a break at the Florida Welcome Center. She told him to be careful with it and Bernie tried to be.
But when weird and frightening things start to happen, the map is not first on any of their minds. All they can think about is what just happened.
What came down from the sky that day would be discussed for years to come. Each person would draw their own conclusions. One thing most agreed on was what they saw, what it looked like.
My Thoughts
Ha! My thoughts are all over the place. It has been a long time since I have been this surprised by a story. I had to reread several scenes just to wrap my mind around what was happening. I wanted to try to form an image in my head. I sure wish this had been a movie. You'll know what I mean when" The Flashpoint" happens.
Troy has a wonderful way of leading you into the story. There is much about this family that you can relate to. The characters are genuine and very likeable. I felt their anguish and their perseverance and really wanted things to be alright for them.
When the event happens I am stunned. I can't wait for you to read it. It is so wild and kind of funny. It definitely makes you think. Think and say, yeah, I hear ya.
If you like Twilight Zone and Tales From the Darkside, you will love this. I also got a flash of that dread you feel in the scene from the movie The Mist by Stephen King. The one where they are driving into the mist and you just know something inexplicable is going to occur. The feeling lasts long after you finish reading.

This short story by Troy Aaron Ratliff is about a road trip in which Daniel, his wife Gina and son Bernie are coming back home from a family vacation to the most "Magical Place on Earth". That was, until they got to Georgia. Tensions are riding high within the family due to a job loss just before the trip. Who wouldn't be stressed? Ratliff kicks the stress up a notch...and then again...and then AGAIN!!!
I don't normally read short stories, but as I read another of his (The Uninvited Guest) yesterday, I wanted to read this as well. I was NOT disappointed. And I really don't know if I could have handled it being any longer, but not because it was bad. Because it was THAT FREAKING GOOD! My skin is crawling at the ending alone!
Grab it, read it...depending on how fast you read, it shouldn't take more than an hour...maybe. I read most of it while at the park with my daughter, so it took me a bit longer. And prepare to be surprised.
Me...well...after reading 'Little Bernie's Map' I honestly don't know if I ever want to go on a road trip...again...ever. *shudder*

I found the short story, "Little Bernie's Map", to be a wonderful tale. What little action there was had been saved for the end, but Troy managed to captivate me throughout the entire story with his amazing imagery and talented writing skills. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, entertaining read.
