"Now that MOOC’s have become part of Higher Education delivery landscape all over the world, we are fortunate that Curt Bonk, Mimi Lee, Tom Reeves, and Tom Reynolds have marshalled an extensive social network of leaders in the use of technology in education to give us a thorough review of their impact as well as potential future contributions. My colleagues and I in the UK have extensively used Bonk’s strategic advice before and I am pleased to offer congratulations on yet another unquestionably insightful and yet practically based book."
―Nigel Banister, Chief Global Officer, Manchester Business School, UK
"This edited collection provides a comprehensive account of current practice and the possibilities afforded by MOOCs and open education approaches. Curt Bonk and his colleagues present a broad range of views sharing practice and theory from researchers and practitioners who have led the way in designing and evaluating accessible education. I love this book! It is a great addition for everyone interested in rising to the challenge of meeting the demands of the learners of today and the future."
―Denise Kirkpatrick, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic), University of Western Sydney, Australia
"In the midst of rapid transformation, where past and current concepts, paradigms, and systems converge to create a new innovation resulting in significant disruptions, a compass and a map would be highly useful to make better sense of what is happening. Fortunately, this book serves as just such a map to venture into this emerging world of MOOCs. While the MOOC is relatively new in rendition, it is not so new in origin ("Massive," as in the wide availability of textbooks; "Open," as the Web and the Internet; "Online," as in distance education and eLearning; "Courses," as in organized instruction). This book will help join more dots, connect to other pictures, and consolidate a new baseline of understanding. As history has demonstrated, when this happens, new philosophical and technological outcomes will result."
―Daniel Tan, Group Chief Learning Officer, Taylor’s Education Group, Malaysia
"Anyone who is in the field of educational technology and/or online learning has an opinion about MOOCs and the so-called "MOOC Revolution." Curt Bonk and his colleagues, Mimi Lee, Tom Reeves, and Tom Reynolds, have provided us with an outstanding book, capturing the thoughts of leaders and experts on this timely subject. The book takes you from skeptics to supporters, while including case studies from around the world. Whether you are currently offering MOOCs, taking a MOOC, or unsure of their impact on education, this is a must-read."
―Darcy Hardy, Associate Vice President, Enterprise Consulting at Blackboard Inc.
"The irrepressible Professor Curt Bonk has now focussed his mind, and the minds of his esteemed colleagues, on the impact of MOOCs and Open Education not just in the USA but around the world. By taking an open view of what MOOCs are and by including the wider dimensions of Open Education practice, this book provides a real insight that will be a useful support for anyone who is studying the principles or practice of Open Education. The book is well timed as many of the early adopters have learnt the lessons from MOOCs and Open Education and these lessons will inform the next generation of educators and learners in the Open Education environment. Clearly, this is the ‘must read’ book on the subject."
―Haydn Blackey, Director of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, the University of South Wales, UK
"This fascinating collection of stories, use cases, and research studies underscores the dramatic and transformative impact that comes from opening the walls of the institution and removing restrictions on how we share our work. Kudos to Drs. Bonk, Lee, Reeves, and Reynolds for inspiring so many experts from the newly emergent land of open education. Whether working in massive courses or from essential open frameworks for action, openness leads to transparency, transparency to trust. From trust, there are no limits as to what is possible."
―Ellen D. Wagner, Chief Research and Strategy Officer, Predictive Analytics Reporting (PAR) Framework, Inc., and Partner and Senior Analyst for Sage Road Solutions, LLC
"The concept of the MOOC has probably been the most discussed and debated topic in education during the past eight years. Despite some concerns about the actual benefits, the quality, and the business model of MOOCs, hundreds of new MOOCs are being developed and offered every day. Yet, not much literature can be found that reports on the phenomenon comprehensively. In response, this book offers critical reflections and reports on the development and practice of MOOCs around the world. It will give the readers a comprehensive view on both the benefits of as well as the issues around MOOCs that still need to be addressed to make it contribute significantly to the notion of open education."
―Tian Belawati, Rector, Universitas Terbuka, Indonesia, and President of the International Council for Open and Distance Education, 2012-2015
"Just as MOOCs stormed the world only a few years ago, Bonk, Lee, Reeves, and Reynolds have brought the world of open education scholars together for a thoughtfully diverse book about the potential for open education globally. This book, thankfully, gives homage to the relatively longer history and backdrop of distance and open education, which, as the authors note, has been building over many years and is capped by the extraordinary opportunity and publicity granted by the coming of MOOCs. Kudos to the editors and authors for their broad geographic, historical, and conceptual perspective."

An exotic Web-flower is blossoming on the stage of the world education with the emergence of the Web as an educational delivery mechanism. Her name is called MOOCs. Her brilliant charm is being accepted and recognized by people all over the world.
Her blossoming is getting fitter with reforming step for learning demand from world education. Namely the Ministries of Education in different countries in the world have become aware of the need the traditional teaching delivery integration with E-learning—Blended Learning delivery nowadays. MOOCs are just the new way of learning delivery; its development and has been described a major buzzword in education today.
Here, I have to mention mainstream excellent works of Curt Bonk and with his editor team, Mimi Lee, Thomas Reeves, and Thomas Reynolds. The representative work is MOOCs and Open Education around the world is required reading in many places around the world. If we say Bonk’s book The World is Open: Web Technology is Revolutionizing Education has helped to revolutionize education, then we can say the book MOOCs and Open Education is a part of this educational revolution and disruption delivery.
This book is mainly delivering a very big picture of the massive educational courses taking place in online today. Web Technology has revolutionized the education in the whole world and simultaneously MOOCs have become a disruptive force in education, especially in Higher Education and lifelong learning. Namely the book is pushing the door open to the environmental limit of learning and teaching in education field and to informal education opportunities in front of each of us in the world.
This book presents an in-depth look at the development of MOOC courses as well as various topics regarding MOOCs and open education all over the world. It tells us MOOCs are successful at providing free (low cost) to large quantities of people. In effect, MOOCs and other forms of open education are effective, innovative learning environments. This book also explores a possible solution to developing and designing MOOCs courses, including assessment questions and issues, the development of MOOC courses for remedial writing, and quality teaching with MOOCs. Such issues are crucial component of effective learning as well as the massiveness of MOOCs necessarily demanding a quality instructor for learner’s success. So, I have recognized that it is now time to embrace massive open online courses, i.e. MOOCs, whatever the organization, institution, or individual involved. But,
If you wonder what “the educational buzzword of 2012”? or why does MOOCs be called “ campus tsunami”…. ?
If you wonder what MOOCs can major play roles in?
If you wonder how many types of MOOCs there are—e.g., MOOCs : xMOOCs, cMOOCs,,,?
If you wonder what are the major MOOC and Open Education issues around the world?
If you wonder what are the new development trends in the future?
I work as an educator at University in China for many years. Without a doubt, I am very honored and proud to read this book. I feel like walking around the stage of world education…It tells us education is markedly changing today….Teachers can transfer a four-walled classroom of learning to authentic learning in action online environment, education is no longer a luxury but a human right. This is just the pursuit and demanding for countless educators both at home and abroad. This book is inspiring and provoking; this book not only makes me recognizing much of the terrain of MOOCs learning and teaching in the educational world but also makes me begin to recognize to change myself teaching and learning from the bottom of my “heart.”
“MOOCer”, a new English word also spread widely in China recent several years. It is reported that the year 2013 certainly witnessed powerful breakthroughs in term of China`s MOOCs initiatives. Some elite universities in China have been increasingly contributing to the worldwide MOOC phenomenon. In Chinese, MOOC is translated into “Mu Ke,” partly based on the similar pronunciation, with “Mu” meaning “adore” and “Ke” meaning “course.” In my opinion, firstly, it still needs the Ministries of Education to call on especially Higher Education, and implement and invest to infrastructure of education and enrich teaching resources for different fields needing different courses which makes learning more open and unconstrained by classes and schedules. This trend is especially evident nowadays. From the perspectives of educators, it is also especially important to remind us to learn and develop and utilize online technology and resources to learn about education in the world and to improve teaching the learner online with the world for most learners also still having to endure extremely dry and bland content from the textbook and maybe unimaginative activities.
Just like every new things, MOOCs is also just a new things. It brings us hope and opportunity about MOOCs and open education as well as much criticism and caution. There is still a range of seemingly never-ending issues related to instructor roles in teaching a massive class or innovative forms of assessment, as well as learner issues such management, quality standards of the content offered, and so on. A teacher spends so much time to design a MOOC course to provide a New Learning Environment for learners.
A book like this is something to enjoy. This book brings to satisfy my internal curiosity about a particular topic and overall thirst for teaching reform and the book also has offered us some insights in designing, as well as participating in, a high-quality MOOC experience. As might be expected, a main concern, or a major challenge, is developing a course that provides an optimal combination between delivering the contents and addressing the needs of the users of it. If you are like me and want to learn how educators are sailing in the sea of education, this book is your navigating light. Open it and challenge yourself and expect some excited with joy moment along the way when you discover answers for whoever you are, a governor, administrator, teacher, or student. Simultaneously I should express my great honor and thankfulness to Bonk, Lee, Reeves, and Reynolds for shrinking and sharing their ideas about MOOCs that helps each one of us to cultivate and find our own place in the field of MOOCs and open education. With your tireless endeavors and sweat, you has paved the way toward a more wonderful world of education. This amazing book “MOOCs and Open Education” might be considered today a vital contribution to this current educational revolution.
It is a good book covering the practice of MOOCs in Phlilippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. However,, there was confusion in Malaysia and may be other parts of the world between the concept of distance education, open education, online learning, and e-learning,in which MOOCS: cMOOC or xMOOCs may be implemented. The xMOOC started by Downs and Seimen was based on the theory of Connectivism and wanted the learners to be the creator or producer of information or to be shared by all while the cMOOCs started by Standford, MIT was based on providing free quality education.from the best professors for all learners across the globe, Users are also comparing the engagement or feedback rates in discussions or forums between cMOOCs Coursera programs and the Open University concept using FutureLearn where the Couresra MOOc is lower than FutreLearn Open University concept
However, the xMOOC is more focussed on creating and sharing more information something lie OER across the globe. But these are information to be shared not instructional in nature to be used by teachers to teach. Is xMOOC instructional or informational in nature. If it is informational in nature teachers may have abundance of information but need need to be planned and integrated the in the course to make learning more meaningful and effective
