I got this book for free after seeing it on the Kindle Buffett list. I did not know the author but thought it might be something that would interest me based on the description. The book was fine and was a quick read (if you can call 354 pages quick); I just was not overwhelmed by it and certainly not left anticipating book 2. There were few if any editing errors which I always appreciate when reading.

Remy Summer Woods is an associate with her father's (Clarence Darrow Woods) firm in South Florida. Remy is actually an artist at heart who is trying to please her father by pursuing law instead of Art. Remy is slated to open the Firm's West Coast (Oregon) firm, but gets interested and invested in representing a 16 year old girl (Bonita) who allegdly shot her father (Patrick Pinkney) to death. The teen is obviously not the killer since her facts doen't match ballistics but she insists that she wants to plead guilty and get the case over with. Remy is determined to find the truth and goes way beyond legal representation searching for it. She learns that the decedent is somehow connected to some illicit activities with heavy hitters who don't want the truth exposed and then all kind of twisted plots to kill or stop her occur in the book. Ultimately, the truth (per se) is revealed and the mystery is solved.

Make Your Own Luck is an exciting page-turner. Joanne Lewis has created an endearing and enduring character in Remy Summer Woods, as well as the other characters around her such as her father, her best friend and her brother. Remy is a young attorney who is torn between pleasing her father and practicing law, and pursuing her dream to be a painter. Remy wants to represent a young girl who is charged with murder but her father won’t let her. Remy strives for the courage to represent the girl and be who she truly is. The story moves quickly and is well written. I rooted for Remy on every page, sometimes even rooting out loud. I never guessed the ending. All in all, Make Your Own Luck is an excellent murder mystery with dangerous situations, twists and turns, and a whole lot of heart. I hope the author will be writing more books in this series. If you love mysteries, or even if you don’t, I highly recommend this novel. I will be reading this author’s other books.

Look out lawyer-mystery lovers, there is a new name in town and it is NOT Grisham.

Joanne Lewis's mystery, Make Your Own Luck, is the story of a Ft. Lauderdale lawyer trying to fight for her client, a 13-year old girl accused to killing her father, and trying to fight for her life. From the first page you are drawn into Remy Summer Woods life and can't stop turning pages until you find out what happens. Right up until the big reveal, I had no idea who the killer was and when I read it on the page I was shocked I hadn't seen it coming. As a lover of mysteries, it is a great feat to totally surprise the reader with the ending. Make Your Own Luck does this.

It is a fast-paced mystery that digs deeper than just murder into the family bonds and trust issues the characters have. The back-drop of Ft. Lauderdale is expertly woven into the story making me miss the sun and white-sand beaches of the city.

I look forward to many more Remy Summer Woods mysteries and hope this is the superb start of a long-lasting series.

I really enjoyed the first three-fourths of this book. The main character was well-developed and interesting and there was a good cast of supporting characters. The ending got a little convoluted and there was a part with the characters from Cuba that didn't seem like they belonged in this story. There were lots of bad guys, the great best friend and the requisite gay character. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes murder mysteries.

Remy is an attorney who wants to quit and go back to her Art studies. Her Dad will never speak to her again if she leaves his firm. Then she takes a pro bono case for a 13 year old girl accused of killing her father. Suddenly people are trying to kill Remy and her client won't help with her defense. What is happening and who's toes has she stepped on ? Good characters and interesting plot.
