5.0 su 5 stelle Exciting art and story by one of Marvel's true visionaries. 17 maggio 2014
Di Richard Bell - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
This volume is quite a bit thinner than the usual Marvel Visionary graphic novel, but it does have some groundbreaking work by a young artist who had a staggering impact on comics history. The implications of this impact is even more amazing when you realize he had no real professional experience and the collective body of his work is relatively sparse. Stan Lee's Marvel comics had three visionaries whose artwork "saved" the doomed comic book industry; these were Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Jim Steranko. Kirby and Ditko were long time comic book professionals who continued in the industry after the collapse of the late 1950's. According to legend, Steranko walked into Marvel's offices with his portfolio and Stan Lee told his right hand man Roy Thomas to " get rid of this guy". Roy looked at Steranko's work and called over Sol Brodsky who was Marvel's production manager. Both felt sheepishly brooked Stan in his office and told him that he really needed to look at "this guy's work". Stan started turning through Steranko's pages and told him " we don't really have anything right now but your too good to let get away". Thsi volume captures in one volume all of Steranko's published non Nick Fury work. Along with the Shield volumes that are out there, a collector can have a very readable way to enjoy this groundbreaking work.

Steranko drew so little for Marvel; but, may have been their best artist. His panels designs were the best by far. His dynamic human anatomy, right there with John Buscema and Gil Kane.

Jim Steranko and his art work has been a favorite of mine sense the 1970s. This book I think completes the works by him in Marvel Comics from that decade. It has the X-Men reprinted and the Captain America which i was never able to find. So I love it.

4.0 su 5 stelle Excellent finale to Steranko's Marvel works, despite colors 25 settembre 2002
Di Adrian - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
I really anticipated this book being a BIG fan of Steranko. I purchased the earlier tomes from Marvel reprinting Steranko's amazing Nick Fury tales. Marvel Visionaries: Jim Steranko reprints his incredible Captain America issues, a groundbreaking, if not short, horror tale from Tower of Shadows, an unexpected romance tale from Our Love Story, and several cover illustrations from various titles around that time.
Now the stories, illustration, and sheer verve on display here blows the mind. Being a young guy of 22, I see even now how a lot of Steranko's influence has seeped into and expanded the vocabulary of comics storytelling and art for my contemporaries. The Captain America issues are just so cinematic and steady in storytelling. I guarantee that the finale to the Cap story arc will leave you giddy with excitement and amazement, like a great action movie. The horror and romance stories are very much welcome as they are very difficult to find as originals and otherwise. So many of the popular comics creators of the last 20 years such as Michael Golden, Paul Gulacy, and Jim Lee readily admit that Steranko played a key part in their development as artists.
My only gripe with the book is that the coloring is sometimes off-putting, but not wholly awful. Steranko's techniques of color holds and otherwise should have held more than enough, even better with today's technology to keep the colors true.
Regardless, I highly recommend this volume, along with Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD and Nick Fury: Scorpio, as must haves for your comic collection and testaments to one of the most extraordinary creators to ever grace comics, Jim Steranko.

5.0 su 5 stelle Covers non-Nick Fury issues 18 gennaio 2014

I have several collections of Steranko's work with Marvel, including the Masterworks Nick Fury books.
The Marvel Visionaries book was a pleasant surprise. Not big at 125 pages, but collects some of Steranko's work that is scattered elsewhere in Masterwork editions or other collections.
Visionaries includes the 3 Captain America issues that I have elsewhere but also includes X-Men 50 and 51 and his Tower of Shadows issue. A Our Love Story issue was also included that I was unaware of.
If you are a Steranko fan then Marvel Visionaries is a good choice alongside S.H.I.E.L.D. by Jim Steranko: The Complete Collection to give you a broad collection of Steranko's Marvel work.
