Mastering ArchiMate is a book about the ArchiMate® Enterprise Architecture Modeling Language, which is an open standard and a Registered Trade Mark of The Open Group. This book gives an introduction to the language and then goes on to show you many different patterns for its use. From Business to Infrastructure, from Risk & Security to Application Exploitation and Maintenance. The first edition was published in 2012 and quickly became widely used. The Open Group even pub- lished a white paper "ArchiMate, Understanding the Basics" that was almost literally taken from the ArchiMate Basics chapter of the first edition of this book. This second edition has twice the diagrams in a book roughly one and a half times the pages of the first edition. There are several new subjects, like linking ArchiMate to BPMN. It has been updated to ArchiMate 2.1. Gerben Wierda (1961) is Lead Architect of APG Asset Management, one of the largest Fiduciary Managers in the world. He has overseen the construction of one of the largest single ArchiMate models in the world to date. He holds an M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Groningen and an MBA from RSM Erasmus, Rotterdam.

As a technical architect working within small to medium sized companies, I'd been looking for a better, unambiguous way to describe the various architectures I work with. When I initially discovered the Archimate modelling language, I was looking for resource that could explain not only the syntax but how to use it effectively and practically.

Having bought Mastering Archimate, I've found this book indispensable. The author explains the syntax effectively in the first part; but what I've found most valuable are the patterns which he has created, I can now effectively take these and use them as sort of "templates component" to apply them to my architectures (for example, from modelling database nodes to modelling excel applications).

The advanced topics are also very helpful, and I've found that I've been able to pick and choose which particular topics within the advanced subjects I'd like to use to help speed up applying the language to my specific situations. In addition, the author has been exceptional at responding to questions that I've sent.

All in all, I've found the book to be well written and very thorough, and almost every architectural scenario/situation where I'd like to apply the language has been covered. I expect that this book is not only great for beginners in Archimate, but will also serve as an excellent reference for more experienced modellers.

This book is a masterpiece. It introduces the reader in the concepts of today’s most powerful enterprise ADL and illustrates these with very useful real-life examples. On top of modeling, it indirectly also educates on design principles.
For me as an enterprise security architect, the support for risk and control as motivation extensions was particularly useful. Already version I of the book boosted my productivity; Version II adds several advanced concepts, distinguishing primary, secondary and tertiary architectures.
The best bang for the buck in EA!
