Some of the military procedures and scenes might not be written in the way the scene would be played out by a current military man from our times but remember, this is not our time and the protagonist is not a trained soldier - not in the circumstances he's forced into.
There is a great deal that goes on in this character's head. I found myself wondering ho I would respond in the same situation. That's what makes this character interesting.

The army puts a cordon around the cities and tries to figure out what's going on, though the fact that every trooper sent into the cities disappears and never returns makes things difficult.
Then, they invent some kind of new weapon system (I won't give any spoilers here) and send a team into New York with orders to find what's going on and kill whoever is doing this ...
The book has several good things going for it. First of all, its full of action and very condensed, so no more flipping pages to skim over boring parts. There are no boring parts! And the are a lot of surprises, which makes guessing where the book is going impossible.
This is a fine thriller and I am no looking forward to the sequel!

Lieutenant Riley is told that with a new weapon, a mechwarrior type battle suit, he and a team of three special forces operatives have a chance to infiltrate the enemy controlled territory and perform a secret mission that my change the outcome of the war. Riley and his team don't have a lot of time to perform their mission as the enemy is gearing up towards another expansion of their territory.
What is particularly interesting is the battle suits themselves, the Mk. 2. Lieutenant Riley and his team must adjust to the battlesuits, learn how to operate with them, how to survive in them for days at a time. They train, not only their bodies and their reflexes but their minds as well, learning the battlesuits' strengths and weaknesses, how to adjust to them and how to fight with them.
The team itself is composed of very differing individuals, from a cold and distant commander to three warriors, one is a pscho, the other, Riley, is really and intelligence operative more comfortable behind a desk to a warm individual, Jebadiah, who is really the sanest and nicest character in the novel.
Mixing up all these elements together, the team is thrown right in the thick of action, will little preparation and with the fate of the united states held in the success of their mission.
