This book gives a clear look at the gift of meditation. I had originally gotten this book from our library, but realized that I will be using it for years as a reference for self and guided meditation. Well worth the money.

5.0 su 5 stelle Excellent overview on meditation 12 settembre 2011
Di Lightlover - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
This book provides a clear, concise and extremely well explained overview of mindfulness meditation for every day use as well as for in-depth healing. The authors approach this subject with intelligence and a great deal of compassion. The piece de resistance is the stillness meditation and the very clear instructions on how to do that particular meditation. I will be using it extensively. Thank you Ian Gawler and Paul Bedson.

5.0 su 5 stelle Definitely the most complete, "accessible" book on meditation I've seen 31 luglio 2016
Di Joel L. Gandelman - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Recensione Vine di un prodotto gratuito ( Cos'è? )
Over the years, I've done meditation (alas) off and on, and yoga off and on -- both in the United States, and when I was living in India as a freelance writer and living in Spain. In 1978, while taking mediation and yoga in Spain, I went on a retreat with my yoga teacher's group at a monastery. The there was an optional meditation at 6 a.m. in the morning -- and I did them. To make a long story short, during one meditation I had a dream-like occurrence where I looked down from way above on a village, in stark detail. In the session after when the yoga teacher ask us if we had a experience, I described what I had experienced. There was an audible gasp: I had described the town we were in, Miraflores, from the air.
TRUE STORY. I never could duplicate that. And YOU explain it to me.
Since then I've read various books on meditation. In terms of content, writing and ORGANIZATION -- this the best I've seen. It's laid out very well, with a ton of information on meditation, mindfulness and , its huge potential as a way to cope with modern day life, stress, anxieties -- and even help physical healing. I can't stress enough how important the WRITING and ORGANIZATION are in books like this. This is really the basic book I would now recommended to someone since it is so crammed with information both on how to do meditation, how to do meditation i ways that fit the modern lifestyle, the the spiritual, mental and physical benefits of it -- and it makes you want to read more on it.
The benefits of mediation have been well documented by researches, universities and those who've practiced it throughout the years. It's not just sitting in an imposed-from-outside, difficult posture and reciting a mantra. In fact, there is a lot of flexibility in how you do it.
Another benefit of this book: it really gets you excited about doing it and will give you the discipline to keep doing it.
It'll also get you all fired up to read books on mediation -- but I suggest you start with this well organized, content heavy, and exceedingly well written book first.

4.0 su 5 stelle More than just "your moment of Zen" 2 luglio 2016
Di Laurence R. Bachmann - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Recensione Vine di un prodotto gratuito ( Cos'è? )
Meditation: An In-Depth Guide, is exactly as promised. It's an in-depth introduction to meditation, specifically Mindfulness-Based Stillness Meditation--" alert yet passive style of meditation that involves the self-regulation of attention toward one's moment to moment experience." That just about says it all. There is some discussion of what it is not (the misconception that one makes their mind a blank, or has no thoughts,) It is about focusing the mind and honing an awareness of and being in and of a moment. There is a good amount of interesting if unessential information about eastern philosophy, Buddhism, TM and more.

The instructional discussion of techniques is well and thoroughly explained with a sensible acknowledgment there is "no one size fits all" approach to entering a meditative state. There are also very good suggested exercises and meditations. I had a sense the benefits were being overstated but as a novice to meditation I am hardly in a position to decide if that is true, and I will reserve judgement. Certainly, Gawler and Bedson are keen practitioners and passionate advocates who are armed with ever-more studies and research weighing in to support meditation's value and the mind-body link.

My rationalist side was irritated by a "moon is in the 7th House" tone that occasionally creeps in (or is perhaps one author's writing style). It's a small quibble though and the writers would correctly point out their book was not written to speak to my rationalist side. The best recommendation I can give the book is it peeked my interest to learn more.

Very well done.

5.0 su 5 stelle Comprehensive guide to meditation 21 luglio 2016
Di PT Cruiser - Pubblicato su

Meditation has become a highly recommended form of relaxation and a means to self awareness by doctors and scholars the world over. It takes no special equipment or setting and anyone can do it. Except that something as simple as sitting quietly and thinking of "nothing" can be highly elusive to many people. Quieting the mind without falling asleep at the same time can be difficult when all the thoughts of daily living go racing through the mind, seemingly on their own. This guide to meditation by Gawler and Paul Bedson addresses this situation with explanations of what meditation is, it's history, and how to achieve this mental state with a minimum of effort.

What I liked best about the book was that the authors presented several different approaches to reaching the meditative state, rather than a "one size fits all" direction like some books. The authors have different backgrounds and personalities which also added to the many ways of approaching the subject. There were parts of the book that were a little redundant, but overall it was very helpful.
