5,0 su 5 stelleA funny look back at an earlier day
22 dicembre 2010 - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
"Memoirs of a Mangy Lover" is an episodic look at some funny moments in the life of Groucho Marx. Could he possibly have pushed beyond the bare facts of each story? Almost certainly. If you ever watched many Groucho interviews where he launched into funny stories, it was easy to tell that many were more comedy monologue than faithful recitation of events. Who cares? In speech and in print Groucho never failed to entertain and amuse, and this book falls right into his success in those goals.
Many of the stories may require you to remember or imagine what lifestyles were like back in the days in which these stories took place. In a very amusing story about a romantic assignation ruined by an invasion of pigeons, you must realize that at one point hotels were not air conditioned, and open windows on warm days was not only common, but required for survival!
I was actually informed of the existence of this book while viewing an old interview with Groucho, possibly by Dick Cavett, though its been several years so I'm not certain at this point. However, in the interview Groucho was asked about some of the books he'd written, and in his answers he mentioned a couple and told a story from each. I was amused enough in the interview that I decided to try to find the books ... now of course decades out of print. At one time that would have been a difficult and very random process, and I might not have even attempted it in the first place. With the advent of Amazon Sellers and eBay, such searches today are almost trivially easy.
"Memoirs of a Mangy Lover" is a light, amusing read, just what Groucho intended it to be. It's perfect for a story at a time each evening in bed before you go to sleep.
5,0 su 5 stelleHe plays with words and pokes fun at the various human conditions

Not so much a biography, but a book filled with Groucho-isms. He plays with words and pokes fun at the various human conditions. As for the collection of essays themselves...are they real? Is he just pulling our legs? Does it really matter? Just have fun reading 'Memoirs of a Mangy Lover! My I also recommend a book by one of his brothers called, 'Harpo Speaks'. Now that is a truly wonderful autobiography.
I'm a huge Marx brothers fan, and have read many books, both by and about them. This one by Groucho is kind of a tepid written version of what would have been a witty verbal exchange, if told as raconteur during an in-depth interview with someone to play off of (Dick Cavett comes to mind). It's amusing enough if you haven't read other accounts of the Marx Brothers' early adventures in vaudeville, matrimony, and affairs of the heart, but kind of repetitive if you're already conversant in things Marxian.
After reading biographies and articles about Groucho that were written by others, I became used to the idea that this great comedian, wit and entertainer was in fact a rather unhappy and unfulfilled man. This may be true, but all the same, it was refreshingly fun to read Groucho's book "Memoirs of a Mangy Lover", and hear him describe himself and his life in his own words.
This was, I believe, never a very popular book, but to me, it reveals Groucho's character. Using his trademark silly, stream of consciousness jokes and puns, and numerous veiled self-deprecating references to himself, Groucho indirectly paints a self-portrait of an aged alley cat looking back on his life. Groucho tells stories from his life, describes his philosophies and beliefs and pet peeves, and throughout, sets an intimate, personal tone that leaves you feeling like you've spent an afternoon listening to a beloved, long-winded uncle, whose cigar smoke will linger in your clothes for days afterwards.
