In the realms of The Memory Thief, memories are currency that can be traded for goods, services, skills, and experiences. A group of people―the Gifted―can steal and redistribute memories. Etta is secretly one of them, but she hasn’t used her Gifted abilities since she left the rebel Shadows following her mother’s accident two years ago. But when her mother is again in danger, Etta has no choice but to return to the underground group in order to complete her greatest heist and save her mother’s life. Etta faces startling attacks, unexpected romance, and above all, her own past as she uncovers a conspiracy that challenges everything she knew about herself and the world around her.
In a place where nothing is what it seems, can Etta ever become more than a memory thief?
“Readers, like Etta and her fellow citizens, will be challenged to contemplate the nature of truth … A welcome addition to the YA fantasy canon, The Memory Thief is a suspenseful page-turner, delightfully chock full of unexpected twists and turns.” – Shelf Awareness

Recensione
The Memory Thief is fast paced and didn't stop for one second...This book is perfect for people who are looking for a quick unique fantasy novel that is also a stand alone! -- The Book Bratz
A compelling, darkly fantastic tale ... Though Mansy builds an expansive fantasy world all her own, her tale uses dystopian motifs to great success, such as the corrosive effects of an overabundance of power falling into the wrong hands and her stern commentary on the divide between the haves and have-nots. Readers, like Etta and her fellow citizens, will be challenged to contemplate the nature of truth, considering the unique role that memories play in the Realms. Mansy also delivers a fine romance, made all the more gratifying by the difficulties sustained along the way. A welcome addition to the YA fantasy canon, The Memory Thief is a suspenseful page-turner, delightfully chock full of unexpected twists and turns. -- Shelf Awareness
A thought-provoking and unique YA fantasy, THE MEMORY THIEF is a engrossing and lovely story. Twists and turns keep the reader guessing as they follow Etta on her physical and mental journey. -- YA and Kids Books Central
As evidenced by 'The Memory Thief', author Lauren Mansy has a genuine talent for narrative storytelling and an authentic flair for originality. A riveting great read with more plot twists and turns than a Disney Land roller coaster, 'The Memory Thief' will prove to be an immediate and enduringly popular addition to school and community library YA Fiction and amp; Fantasy Fiction collections. -- Midwest Book Review

Positives:
Interesting memory “magic” system
Negatives:
Info dumps, lazy writing, poor character and plot development, pacing problems, story not engaging enough
Things that might matter to some people:
No language, no sex, brief kiss, non-graphic violence
Conclusion:
Don’t bother with this book.

On a completely different note (spoiler alert) ...the author paints a bleak picture of the conditions of her main characters (Etta and Ryder) in the beginning of the novel. They appear alone, struggling and quite frankly their world is pretty grey because of the evil that prevails in their town. Very symbolic on how we many times find ourselves in life. The poverty of their souls, depressed mind set and demeanor is palatable. They are struggling to make it day to day and keep Etta's mother alive from the demonic Madam. However, in the background (unbeknownst to Etta and Ryder) good is working on their behalf. They can't see it or feel it... but it is there. I think that is true of all of us when we know in WHOM we belong. When we understand our real identity, we are able to take our rightful position in life. Lauren Mansy will have a long and successful career as a writer. I look forward to hearing more from this young author.

Mainly I enjoyed reading The Mind Thief because it gave hope, reminding me as I read Jules of my daughter and niece incapacitated for now to not let mind thieves discourage you. You will get better and heal.

I also appreciated the glossary in the front instead of the back it helped lay the foundation of the story without giving away the story.
This book has you walking along with Etta on her journey through all the things life has thrown at her and struggles and adventures she has as she searches for answers.
Just a good book, with adventure, friendship, struggles, and a bit of romance.
Some of the quotes from the first chapter that had me hooked:
"They go to wish loved one's goodbye. To beg the Minders to let their children or their parents come home."
"It’s gray, gray, and more gray everywhere. But most who live here don’t even notice. Their memories keep them in whichever place in the past they wish to dwell."
"Once he’s been secured, she takes her place beside him, her bony hand trailing along his shoulders. “Do you have any last words, Kellen Marks?” He tips his eyes up to meet hers. “Better things await me.” The audience goes deathly silent, and I too am mesmerized by his calm. There’s a rare beauty about him, one that never graces this stage. Death does not frighten him. How is it he’s made his peace with this world and is ready to travel into the next? He looks serene, content even. Then I blink, and his eyes have rolled back into his head. I don’t realize I’ve grabbed Ryder’s hand until she squeezes mine. I’ve watched a lot of auctions, but Kellen’s cries strike me harder than most, like a knife hitting bone. The Memory Auction has begun.
