Descrizione prodotto

Gifted and twice-exceptional students often struggle to fit in traditional classrooms, and homeschooling isn’t always an option. Enter Micro-Schools: an educational option bridging the gap. Micro-schools offer personalized learning in a school setting, led by instructors who understand the nuances and needs of gifted and 2e kids.

Starting your own micro-school may seem daunting, but a successful micro-school doesn’t require a huge budget or the latest everything. Instead, it requires a passionate individual at the helm. One like Jade Rivera, author of "Micro-Schools: Creating Personalized Learning on a Budget." In her latest book, Jade shares her successes and challenges working in and starting micro-schools. She discusses how to organize your school, hire the best instructors, work with parents, create an open and accepting environment, and so much more. After reading Jade’s book, you’ll be inspired to get your own micro-school up and running, ready to serve the gifted and 2e students in your community.

This book was transformative!

As an educator, I don't specifically work with 2e students, yet as I read, I saw so many of my students in the challenges and behaviors described. Jade's clear explanations and practical suggestions helped me reexamine my approaches and see how to proceed with more empathy.

This is not only a must-have guide for creating a micro-school, it is also a wonderful introduction for anyone (like me!) who needs more background and understanding about gifted/2e learners. The mix of step-by-step instructions and well-reasoned explanations, all presented in Jade's down-to-earth, relate-able style, makes this a great read and a powerful resource.

This book is such a breath of fresh air! If more educators were even aware of the practices that Jade speaks about in her book, I think micro schools would be a part of a new movement for neurodivergent learners and their caregivers and teachers. It offers so many tools and things to think about, whether you're interested in starting your own school or are looking for supportive idea to apply in the classroom.

Awesome, quick read. Super helpful.

5.0 su 5 stelle Insightful, Approachable, and Transformative 22 gennaio 2016

Jade begins Micro-Schools with empathic and insightful descriptions of how giftedness and additional exceptionalities can impact a young person. She extends this empathic awareness to the impact on families and friends.

In short, these kids need a balance of freedom and structure that is different from the norm.

Jade offers practical advice and questions to consider. Following the model of empathy before education, she encourages authentic assessment of a family’s hopes and needs.

People need to be heard, and this book tells what questions to ask. She quotes from parents and business owners who have felt the palpable relief of finding an option where their child can be fully known.

Forming any community, particularly one focused on education, could seem like an overwhelming task of executive functioning. Developing a cohort of like-minded families who perhaps were misfitted for other available strategies can be both necessary and abundant; not all necessity leads to just barely getting by.

With prescient wisdom, Jade lines out details about how to care for the adults who work with these children. She makes the connection between how gifted kids often prefer the company of older people and the relevant self-care and compensation needed.

While clearly useful for families contemplating starting their own micro-school, educators in a variety of other settings can learn from how Jade suggests a tailored approach to the needs of the individuals while sorting out how to be a functional community.

It’s almost like micro-schools are in a liminal space between friends and family. As Jade writes, “people will move for an established program that is doing good things.”

It’s all about community.

I was captivated from page one. The author shares her own story of struggle as a gifted 2e. As a parent and grandparent of my own G/T 2e children, I found this book extremely encouraging as I begin to help my daughter prepare for educating her children. As a veteran homeschoolers and a degrees teacher of children with challenges, I felt like this was a recipe for what is missing from our educational system.

Excellent job. The only downside would be that I would have loved to see more examples of scheduling in how to handle the various projects. Loved the example contracts.

I am beyond proud and excited to see this book finally published (just out today!) by my close friend and my daughter's teacher for three years. It is so much more than the title represents. It is a commentary on the failure of schools to meet the needs of sensitive, gifted and twice exceptional kids; a tool to validate parents who struggle to be their child's advocate in a system and a society that seems hell bent on crushing these kids' extremes down; and is a realistic guidebook for embarking on creating a micro-school to nurture the emotional, social AND academic needs of these kiddos (in that order). All throughout, Jade is down to earth, inspiring and yet brutally honest about the challenges you will face if you choose to pioneer into micro-schooling territory. Thank you Jade Rivera, for all that you have done for our kids and those kids that might benefit from parents and educators that might reading this.
