As a scientist and author specializing in technology innovation, H. Peter Alesso has over twenty years research experience at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). As Engineering Group Leader at LLNL he led a team of computer scientists and engineers in innovative applications across a wide range of supercomputers, workstations and networks. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. and served in the U.S. Navy on nuclear submarines before completing an M.S. and an advanced Engineering Degree at M.I.T. He has published several software titles and numerous scientific journal and conference articles, and he is the author/co-author of six books. Yes, I am a fan of Horatio Hornblower. Yes I am a fan of Honor Harrington - At least until the final books. But I am not a fan of this and will not be reading further into the series. That is a great pity, as I was delighted to have found another series which looked like it would be thoroughly enjoyable. But the idea of the astroid belt as a large pile of clashing rocks was one problem. Another was solar glare at Jupiter? Then add that the eponymous hero is so wonderfully skilled that nothing seems to be a struggle – very not Hornblower. The writing style irritates, and I’m done after one book.

A rework of many other sci find themes bordering on plagiarism in places. Perhaps he thought that imitation was flattery but this falls short in so many ways. A Contrived and transparent plot with little imagery to capture the reader's imagination or build suspense. This was ordered by mistake. A mistake that will not be made again.

I'm a real fan of science fiction and this ticked all the boxes for me. I thought the concept was very fresh and original; a young man sent to battle aliens in deep space who has the supposed disadvantage of not being genetically engineered. I really enjoy this type of science fiction story as it is a scenario that you could really imagine happening at some time in the future; for me this makes it all the more interesting.

I thought the story was competently written and nicely organised. I found the plot easy to follow and found myself becoming involved with the characters. I particularly enjoyed the developing romance between Henry and Kelsey; a dash of romance is essential I think to keep things interesting (although that might just be because I'm a girl!)

All in all, I thought that this was a great start to what promises to be a riveting science fiction saga, and I would recommend it to all science fiction fans; old and young alike.

Overcoming prejudice, and alien enemies our hero battles on. Entertaining story, with no pretensions, just action and self-doubt, in almost equal measure. Looking forward to following the story as it unfolds in future volumes. Great read!

The story was engaging with just enough technical detail not to become overpowering. The main character is likeable and sympathetic. All in all, a lot of fun and a great start to what l hope will be an excellent series!
