Mi piace tornare sui miei passi anche quando implica dover ammettere di aver commesso un errore.
Avevo volutamente tralasciato quest'album alla sua uscita dopo che "In rainbow" e "The king of limb" mi avevano allontanato dalla band. Album decisamente sopra la media quei due lavori, ma i Radiohead mi avevano abituato al meglio e in quei due lavori avevo trovato tracce di ripetitività e di monotonia.
E ora eccomi qua, incantato davanti a questo album preso più per riempire un vuoto che per vera curiosità.
E ho ritrovato i Radiohead che amavo, capaci di creare atmosfere sospese tra tensione e onirica pacatezza, la band capace di usare l'elettronica come se fosse uno strumento classico.
Si era scritto tanto di come questo album fosse velato di malinconia (sia lirica che strumentale) in quanto resoconto del brutto periodo a livello personale di Yorke dopo il suo divorzio.
Ma i Radiohead solari non lo sono mai stati e in questo album io in realtà ci trovo si umori umbratili ma anche serenità, grande senso melodico e quella sottile tensione sempre trattenuta che per me è sempre stata l'arma vincente della band. E poi gli arrangiamenti orchestrali, sublimi che in contrasto con l'elettronica creano qualcosa di magico. In pratica ci trovo undici canzoni eccellenti.
"A moon shapes pool" è un album meraviglioso. In tanti se ne sono accorti a tempo debito. Io ci sono arrivato dopo quasi quattro anni ma ci sono arrivato.

D'ò questa recensione per far sapere che il seguente album è, a parer mio, uno dei migliori dei radiohead.
Il sound non eccessivamente pulito, le sonorità particolari, ed i testi più che commoventi, equivalgono ad un viaggio mentale. Consiglio questo disco soprattutto a chi coltiva la passione per la musica elettronica-sperimentale [un genere musicale che personalmente favorisco a gli altri] o per la musica alternativa con sonorità particolari.
Se vi piace questo sound vi consiglo di provare anche The King Of Limbs, oppure Hail To The Thief, che secondo me sono anch'essi album magnifici. Solo per farvi sapere, volevo inoltre aggiungere che il Cantante della band, Thom Yorke, ha composto un'album da solista che secondo me è altrettanto bello, per chi fosse interessato ad ascoltarlo,si chiama Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, premetto che questo disco dalle sonorità molto particolari forse si rivelerà difficile da comprendere, ma vale la pena di ascoltarlo.
In sintesi A Moon Shaped Pool, contrariamente a quello che afferma qualcuno, è alla parità di OK Computer, se non migliore.

Bel disco dei Radiohead , dopo le prove in chiaro e scuro di In Rainbow e Kings of Limbs (a mio avviso i 2 lavori meno convincenti del gruppo). Certo che the Bends e Ok Computer sono un'altra cosa ( dichiarati da molti critici patrimonio dell'umanita' ) Questo disco invece presenta una ritrovata forma canzone con sontuosi arrangiamenti orchestrali e di pianoforte sui quali si innesta la voce di Yorke, che disegna melodie sognanti , mantenendo un minimalismo di base e una quasi totale assenza di sperimentazione. Ne risulta un lavoro accessibile e gradevole , che pero' mantiene in pieno lo stile consolidato e riconoscibilissimo del gruppo , lontano come sempre da tutto quello che si sente in giro e dalle mode commerciali . Bello .Rimarra' un disco fuori dal tempo.

L'album più intimista dei Radiohead, pur risultando non proprio un capolavoro, è un disco di grande intensità, costruito con enorme mestiere.
L'edizione in vinile è incisa benissimo presentando un'ottima dilatazione della scena.

Ottimo album. Doppio Vinile bianco bellissimo...

Come sempre i Radiohead non ne sbagliano una. Ottimo l'album e il doppio vinile bianco è veramente bello da vedere.
Non so quanto veramente sia "limited" a 9000 copie questa edizione dato che ci sono ancora pezzi a disposizione (strano!), anche se i prezzi in alcuni casi sono già raddoppiati...
Ci sono due stampe diverse in circolazione. Ascoltando i miei vinili e da quello che ho letto in giro su un paio di tracce c'è qualche scricchiolio, ma niente di esagerato, per il resto i dischi vanno una meraviglia.
Inoltre all'interno c'è la card che ti da la possibilità di scaricare l'album in versione Wav dal sito dei Radiohead ed in mp3 da amazon: valore aggiunto.
Consigliato e assolutamente da avere nella collezione!

Difficile dire che sia un brutto disco, soprattutto se paragonato a KING OF LIMB. E tuttavia non ci si libera mai da una certa sensazione di già sentito e di stanchezza. Melodie piacevoli, arrangiamenti interessanti, ma il disco non decolla mai, i crecendo terminano prima di esplodere e le canzoni finiscono quasi sempre come sono iniziate. Alcune anche noiosette e inutili (Identikit), altre più avvincenti (The Numbers), altre incompiute (Burning the witch). Senza che si batta mai un colpo (anche e proprio a livello percussivo...). Basta confrontare le due versioni di TRUE LOVE WAITS per capire quanto sono invecchiati. Quella che chiude questo disco è moscissima. E che la metà dei brani sia frutto di ripescaggi qualche cosa vorrà pure dire.. Non c'è niente di male, è nella natura delle cose. Ma non si può gridare al capolavoro solo perche abbiamo alle spalle cinque anni di astinenza. Se, ascolto dopo ascolto, IN RAINBOWS cresceva, A MOON SHAPED POOL si spegne passaggio dopo passaggio. Gli resta la bellezza di un soprammobile che ti ricorda qualcosa, di cui però potresti fare anche a meno.

Instead of waxing lyrical about the band and their music, I just wanted to post a couple of lines to explain some things about the vinyl version, which are not made clear in the standard listing.

Firstly, unlike many of Radiohead's previous double vinyl pressings of (single) studio albums (most notably, 'In Rainbows'), the two platters contained in this set both play at the standard 33.3rpm speed. That's worth mentioning, as many high-end decks require the drive belt to be moved to a larger section of the pulley to play at that speed, or else are incapable of playing at 45rpm at all!

As for the pressing and the sound quality, there are No (nasty) Surprises there. Apart from the fact that the LPs are so turbo-charged with static when new that they have to be virtually 'wrenched' out of the (printed) paper inner sleeves and then emerge covered in small bits of paper dust from said sleeve. A good clean/wash before playing them reveals the pressings to be full of depth and separation with a suitably low 'noise floor'.

Modern vinyl pressings are something of a mixed bag and even being on a 180g vinyl blank doesn't guarantee a good pressing or a flat disc surface. This XL Recordings original pressing, however, is amongst the best in my (modest) collection. Having the grooves so widely spaced (due to the short running times of each side) helps a lot.

Prior to the record arriving, I downloaded the MP3s to listen to. Now that the vinyl is playing (at high volume) on my turntable, I am starting to hear the tracks 'properly' for the first time ... and I like what I hear :-) .

Radiohead. Unlike any other band on earth. We're so lucky to have them.

Overall a Good Album But Why The Annoying String Arrangements? 3.5/5

First of all I would consider myself a true Radiohead fan - from 'The Bends' anyway - and when the band made a concerted effort to move away from OK Computer I stood by them and have never regretted it. My life has been made better by Radiohead and their music - it is as simple as that.

Radiohead work hard at what they do (since probably, it is their main job) and produce music that they seem to like more and more these days and if you like it too, all the better.

There are three tracks on here though that I find puzzling and cannot get on with - 'Daydreaming' and 'Glass Eyes' that just seem to meander nowhere. I might end up liking Glass Eyes. But the real disappointment for me is 'True Love Waits'. I just don't get it, despite the eager anticipation.

The other thing I don't get is the use of string sections throughout the album. OK, Jonny has been doing some movie soundtracks and arrangements - his music for 'Inherent Vice' is superb and I recommend that CD unreservedly - but the use of string sections just seems to have been used in a rather blanket and unthinking fashion.

For example in 'Burn the Witch' it works rather well (and the song itself shows why Yorke is such an amazing vocalist) but the way strings just muscle in on 'The Numbers' is just overkill. There is a better version of this song with Thom and Jonny on their guitars with a drum machine online and I prefer that one because it is such a strong song it needs nothing else to carry it.

I wonder why the band didn't do what they normally do - sample other instruments and even their voices and use those to back such tracks - this is something that Radiohead have always done so well and also what makes them unconventional and unique. The use of stock sounding string arrangements makes the music lose its 'Radioheadedness'.

Anyhow - look - I Iove 'em and always will, but for me this is 3.5 album out of 5. And the strong songs (such as 'Decks Dark' , 'Identikit' and 'Tinker Tailor') really stand out against their peers.

As odd as the title of this review is, like this album, it conveys the prevailing theme encapsulated in this album.

And that is of the British mid-winter.

This album is the aural equivalent of driving around the uk 🇬🇧 in a thick, freezing fog, peering out into infinity.

Occasionally motifs appear as solid and familiar as landmarks, only to be subsumed and consumed by the aether, wispy and dreamlike.

And it is this dynamic tension between solid and aether, familiar and alien which anchors the album.

And yet, it's not a forbidding landscape. It's properly spellbinding and of an as yet unmatched beauty.

As well as great musicianship from the band, the classical arrangements have been executed perfectly.

I'd have preferred to have had the lyrics included with the cd.

But as i have found this to be one of the best albums of the 21st century, I can excuse the band that much.

So, highly recommended!

If you loved the Bends and OK Computer but have found some of Radiohead's albums a bit progressive since then, this one is worth checking out. It can take me ages to get into a Radiohead album but this one had me on second listen. Plenty of tune and wonderful production, in a similar spirit to In Rainbows.

For audiophiles looking for advice on sound reproduction, I found the pressing and production excellent and sounds fabulous on the hi-fi, which is probably contributed to giving it 5 stars

What a fantastic album. I would class myself as a life long Radiohead fan, I've got all their albums, and love all of them, but this is absolutely wonderful from start to finish.
