Sinossi

Despite their essential contribution to the present world, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are still mostly unknown outside the circles of their disciples and devotees. It is Georges Van Vrekhem’s intention in this biography of the Mother to examine all available material about her life and to present it in an accessible and interesting way. He attempts to draw the full picture, including the often neglected but important last years of her life, and even of some reincarnations explicitly confirmed by the Mother herself.

The Mother was born as Mirra Alfassa in Paris in 1878. She became an artist, married an artist, and participated in the vibrant life of the metropolis during the fin de siècle and early twentieth century. She became the Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1926. This book is a rigorous description of the incredible effort of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo. Their vision is an important perspective allowing for the understanding of what awaits humanity in the new millennium.

This is really a wonderful book by a writer who has done a tremendous amount of research to cover the whole field of this project, the new yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. I could say much in praise of this book, but I'm sure others have already done so. It's really a book for someone who already has a good deal of background on Mother and Sri Aurobindo. I say that as a caution because so many of the things about Mother simply stretch one's envelope to the breaking point, unless one is prepared to understand that this life, our lives, is truly magical, and much that takes place in Mother's llife (and Sri Aurobindo'a) is simply of that nature. Like magic. Much that is occult. This is the way consciousness is, and when one understands that Consciousness is Brahman, Divinity, {Satchitananda, Being, Consciousness, Bliss.}, then one can see that we are in a different ball game. We are That. i.e. no big daddy in the skies to shake his fist at us, or threaten us with hell. Rather we ourselves are That, that Beingness, Consciousness, Bliss, and what happens in this context is often like magic. But see for yourself. This could easily become a book in itself.

This book is Georges' attempt to give a 10,000 foot view of Mother's life and he did a great job surpassing my expectations. Reading this book you can feel that he has a deep connection with The Mother and has written this book with utmost sincerity. Although those closest to her only saw a fraction of her life, and that too the outermost parts of it, this is a good presentation of that fraction.
I recommend reading it.
