Descrizione prodotto

This new Slate Ridge Press edition of the classic Hawaiian mystery concludes with “The Making of MURDER ON MOLOKA’I”—fifty-five pages of previously unpublished excerpts and explanatory notes by the author. These bonus materials give us a glimpse into the creative process behind the book and expand our conception of the Surfing Detective and his Hawai‘i. A must for fans of the wave-riding gumshoe!

When Boston heiress Adrienne Ridgely strides into his Honolulu office, Surfing Detective Kai Cooke likes what he sees, but doubts what he hears. Adrienne’s sister, environmental activist Sara Ridgely-Parke, plunged to her death from a mule on Moloka‘i – the first fatal incident on the soaring cliffs above Kalaupapa’s fabled leper colony. Murder, cries Adrienne, perpetrated by Sara’s ex-husband, developer J. Gregory Parke. Cooke flies to Moloka‘i, tracking tantalizing leads to an unlikely murder that, despite himself, he starts to believe in.

Was the mule prodded or spooked or drugged? Did Parke do it for vengeance, or Adrienne for an inheritance, as Parke alleges? Soon Kai uncovers a motive more noxious than either of these – entangling him in the shady dealings of big-time developers, corrupt politicians, and underworld thugs. As he hops from island to island seeking a pivotal clue, the clock ticks down on more than the P.I.’s case or even his own life. The future of Moloka‘i itself is at stake.

Chip Hughes earned a Ph.D. in English at Indiana University and taught American literature, film, writing, and popular fiction at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. His non-fiction publications include BEYOND THE RED PONY: A READER'S COMPANION TO STEINBECK'S SHORT STORIES—also translated into Japanese; JOHN STEINBECK: A STUDY OF THE SHORT FICTION; and numerous essays and reviews. An active member of the Private Eye Writers of America, Chip launched the Surfing Detective mystery series in 2004 with MURDER ON MOLOKA'I. The second book, WIPEOUT!, followed in 2007. The third, KULA, in 2011. Other titles, in various stages of development, include MURDER AT VOLCANO HOUSE, BARKING SANDS, and THE MAUI MASSEUSE. The series has been optioned for television. More at Chip lives in Windward O‘ahu with his wife and two retrievers. He surfs when time allows.

3.0 su 5 stelle decent Hawaii mystery 12 settembre 2014

Plot and pacing were good. Character development and dialog were adequate but I hope both are stronger on the author's next book. Great description of how Hawaii works and the corruption present. This was a decent beginning book with an interesting premise. For those who care it was light on language, sex and violence.

3.0 su 5 stelle Hawaii-Five-O Meets Raymond Chandler... 29 marzo 2011

Hawaii-Five-O meets Raymond Chandler. Except that Philip Marlowe surfs and speaks passable pidgin. In the first book of his Surfing Detective series, author-surfer Chip Hughes crafts a quick reading, entertaining story about Oahu detective Kai Cooke. An experienced surfer and detective, Cooke meets a beautiful Boston heiress (aren't they always hot and rich?) looking to uncover the truth about her eco-feminist sister's death (who is also hot.....and rich). Cooke digs into the case and begins to uncover a tangled web of corporate greed, corrupt public service officials, and dark island forces. Is this top notch literature? Nope, but that's quite fine with me. Hughes` book is fun to read and a great companion for you on a hot day sunning at Waikiki. If, like me, you enjoy pulpy detective books and the beach, then you'll enjoy Hughes` Surfing Detective series. I reviewed this book at the surf book review site The Waterman's Library (which links to Amazon), and purchased the book via Amazon.

Read this just before my trip to Molokai and my mule ride to the leper colony. I enjoyed the basic plot: a whodunit with intrigue about the rich and real estate development. I really enjoy local crime stories and an exploration of corruption. But our hero does too much thinking with his little head if you catch my drift. Had he not used foul language or the sexy scenes I would have given it 3.5 stars. None of the folks I met on Molokai during July had heard of the book but seemed intrigued. BTW, my mule had sure feet in the rainstorm coming back up the cliff, all 1700 feet of it.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Real Trreasure 1 aprile 2016

Murder on Moloka'i is a little treasure. It combines a serious murder mystery with outstanding descriptions of the Hawaiian Islands, unusual characters, and a great exposition of the Zen of surfing. Kai is a part-Hawaiian detective brought in to investigate a death thought to be accidental. The slow resolution of who is involved and how they are involved takes many paths, with enough violence to keep the reader alert and engrossed. The language is smooth, with some rocky parts as kai interacts with other Hawaiians in island lingo. Detailed descriptions bring the narrative to life and help to create images for the reader. The book has been severely edited to provide a quick and non-demanding read. However the author includes a lengthy appendix to provide sample of some of the excised material. Based on the quality of writing I would have enjoyed the longer version as well.

3.0 su 5 stelle Predictable 9 luglio 2015

Kai, the "Surfing Detective" is retained by a wealthy woman to investigate the circumstances of her sister's death. A seeming accident, the sister, an environmental activist attorney, plunged to her death after the mule she was riding collapsed. The case soon leads to corruption and intrigue where crooks and corporate entities are attempting to develop the pristine, protected areas of Hawaii over the objections of the people.

This is a slow moving and predictable story. Kai is likable but the rest of the cast lacked charm and dimension. Most annoying was the constant use of local dialect. It is clumsy, dumb and disruptive. I wish more of the local atmosphere and history was integrated. Hawaii has a rich heritage and the setting here was not especially distinctive. Yes, the site of the sister's death was near the famous leper colony but there is little else to convey the distinctive and beautiful island ambiance. There are some sexual situations but no explicit sex. It is a run of the mill story, a quick and unchallenging read with nothing new or original.
