Sinossi

"My Life Sentences" is a true story written by Elisha Chirchir who was born in Kenya - Africa to a family of 14. Despite the large family size, tragedies took away his five siblings and he could not understand why. Elisha takes you through each step of his life as he grew up in the remote corners of Africa to the lighted streets of the United States of America. Challenges did not stop after landing in New York. They seem to never end for him at all. Every time things seemed to lighten up, an even darker shadow came knocking. He has been through thick and thin and yet he is prepared for the worst. While doing his best to draw a fine a line between the two different lifestyles (Africa and America), he clearly draws the real picture of his struggles. You can only relate to his harrowing transitions by reading his story.....

5.0 su 5 stelle "It was all about being happy with what I had." 9 giugno 2012
Di Lois Turley - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Elisha begins, "It all started when I was born," and continues as if he remembers life from that day: "...everyone seated in the delivery room was happy that a boy was born.... Apart from a new born baby, the corn fields were ready for harvesting.... With my sisters I took porridge almost every day..."

Elisha wrote the words I chose for the title of this review to describe his early childhood, reminiscent of the well-water days some of us can recall before prevalence of TV/tech/automobiles. He played hide-and-seek in the absence of modern technology, walked almost everywhere he went, enjoyed food his mom "cooked with the ingredient of love," and everyone drank "from the same pot of cold water from a nearby river."

He suffered through childhood abuse. He watched some of his beloved siblings slowly die from illnesses. He saw his mother's broken heart when she buried stillborn infants. He became dangerously malnourished during a drought, and had to move far away to live with an uncle until the food shortage was over.

Elisha worked hard in his quest for education, and refused to give up many times when education looked impossible. He writes: "While other youths were wasting time at road junctions under trees talking to people passing by, I used my time to study and attend church.... Every morning we worked on the farms, planted new crops, harvested some...."

Oh and there were girls.... When that magical age comes that boys start noticing girls in a new way, what would life be without them?

Elisha taught as a volunteer in his former grade school while awaiting test results for his Kenya Certificate Secondary Education, and later he was offered a position under a paid contract as a high school teacher. Read the book to learn the rest, including his life in the U.S. now.

Looking back over his life thus far, Elisha writes "I will always believe in the power within me and the promise from God that he won't let me lose."

The grammar of this book is not perfect but, for someone whose native tongue is not English, Elisha has excellent mastery of the English language. The book is a delight to read.

Elisha's story of perseverance is an inspiration! He had to overcome much adversity in order to attend school in his country, then more obstacles to come to America. He really made me think about some of the things I take for granted in the U.S. English is obviously not his first language, but his syntax made it seem like he was sitting right beside me telling his story. Very enjoyable read---I recommend it!

This was a very good read. Things you may think you know, but, you really don't. Makes sense out of a lot of life's ups and downs. Wish the book could have continued. Would recommend this book highly. Very, very good book.
